Since moving back to Ft. Lauderdale, my wife is still in NC until our house sells. This means I can go to the ranges in the area more ;D, Funny, When I put my ears and eyes on, I can't hear the phone or anything. ::)
So, I decided to conduct a test on my full size M+P .40. I've had the pistol since Feb. 08, and always fired, cleaned, lubed, repeat,.. With no issues.
Over the last week, I decided to eliminate the clean and lube part. Also I fired all different types and brands of .40 ammo.
Winchester Target/Range
Remington
Magtech
CCI Blazer Brass
Hornady
Winchester LE
Cor-Bon
Even some reloaded rounds bought in bag form at a gun show some time back.
The total number of rounds is 750. I have not changed anything on the pistol at all. Its completely stock.
Here's a picture after today's session of the "dirty girl" after 750 rds.

I tried to picture the fouling inside the barrel.

Just for the fun of it, I blazed through the last 100 rds. of Winchester Target/Range ammo as fast as I could, (I"ve never got the barrel that hot), that thing was really toasty.
I saved my final 8 rds. of Cor-Bon JHP's for something I read on a previous thread regarding extreme pistol training. So I ran a new target as far down the range (25yds.) as it would go. This is something very valid as it was was a good post. Here was the result:

Not very scientific, but just a shooter with time away from the wife to get more range time in. I had NO FTF, FTFeed, or FTE. ;D It went bang every single time without even a hiccup.
Jaybethel, you did good on your M+P from MB.
I know I didn't throw sand in it, and drag it behind my car, and stick it elbow deep in mud, but I had the time and ammo, so I thought I'd give it a go. I would have loved to try another 750 rds. but I am like Joe the Plumber, and don't have the "bling" for a 1500 or 2000 rd. test. Plus, I had to save some of my .40 stash for the BHO zombies... ;)
Yes, I know there are the G fans and others, and I know they can probably achieve the same result easily. But I am an M+P fan, and just thought I'd throw my results in the pot, for anyone considering a reliable pistol.

OUTSTANDING results there, Tom.

Gun lust..... Dont let my Glock find out! ;)

Good post. Now I need a report on the M&P .45. :)

It looks like the M&P semi-autos will become another hallmark model for S&W in the coming years. Zero bad reports on them at my local range. Hope the Florida move suits y'all well and the Wilmington house sells soon. Lotsa folks (mostly
DamnYankees), keep moving down, so it should move soon.

RATS! My acquisition list just keeps getting longer!!!!!!!!!! ;D I'm sure the wife will understand.

Nice range report, and you are right, I am really happy with the M&P I've got. I had always been looking at them since they came out, but I had no idea how solid they really are. I am now a fan as well, and if it ever comes to the point where I can afford to get more, I'm in. The 40 I think is what they designed it around, but I would think their 45 would rock as well.

Good report. By the way, you can clean it now. ;)

Great guns. Dependable guns. I've got the same reliability with mine....never a misfire, failure to feed, fai...heck no failures at all.
And....the trigger, with a little work, breaks cleanly at 4.5 lbs for both.
Now...I need a 40 to round out the family.....

Thanks for raising the bar Tom!!
I was content with just writing about my torture tests. Now I have to take pics!! :o
Good work and nice write-up.

Thanks for the mini torture test! I really like the M&Ps. On a side note, one of the largest LE agencies in my area just transitioned from 5946s to MP40s and seem to be satisfied with them.

I've seen a LOT of those older S&W semi's in gun shops (also Bud's online) from LE trade-ins, and have been told by more than one shopkeeper not to bother buying one, as they're not too great. Maybe they'd just rather sell you a shiny new something or other?
-
Tom,
Very nicely done.
My own weapons verification test came out a little different. During 500 round break in:
1) According to my weapons log the front sight broke off at 498 rounds. Sent back to S&W and repaired in a week
2) Magazine release began to fail at round 525 and broke completely at about 577. S&W sent part for me to replace at home. They had identified that as a design flaw.
It goes to show that there will be some problem children from every manufacturer.
I do like the way the gun shoots but do not trust mine enough to carry it. Yours passes the test.

I would say that they are hit or miss. I know some jobs that still carry them, including the NYPD. I have fired the 59 series, 40 series and 45 series in both DA/SA and DAO. My biggest complaints would be the slide-mounted decocker (DA/SA versions) and the triggers feel pretty gritty. Good guns otherwise though if you get one that's reliable. I know back in the day when my dept. carried the 5946 they broke more than a couple of extractors which basically gives you an extra baton in a gun fight.

Anyone remember the S&W 669 ? Mod 59 ultra compact 13 +1 Stainless, Had one, did not like it, have not owned a sub compact since.
-
I ran 800 round through my PX4 .40 S&W last weekend with only a before and after cleaning. I only had one FTF and that was my fault because the magazine wasn't 100% seated.

Yes, and the 6906. Not a fan of either one.

I have three MP's, a MP 40, a MP 9c and a newly acquired MP 9 Pro. My MP 40 has never had any kind of malfunction with over 3000 rounds through it, my MP 9c had a minor failure to feed problem, which S & W promptly fixed and my newish MP 9 Pro has had no malfunctions with about 700 or so rounds through it. All three of these pistols are extremely accurate (even the 9c), have great ergonomics and have a great no B.S. warranty from S & W.
The MP 9 Pro has now become my favorite range pistol. Very good accuracy, hardly noticable recoil with fast target acquisition by the fiber optic front sight. Love these pistols especially the Pro!
Below is a link to the MP Forum thread by people who have had no problems with their MP's.
