Title: Looking at trading up
Post by: garand4life on November 03, 2008, 07:07:34 PM
I'm looking at trading up from my Taurus PT1911 and M&P 40 to a sSig 226 either in 9mm or .40. Is it worth it? I have an LCP but am not quite satisfied with either of my 2 main carry units. I would rather have 1 main carry and 1 caliber to worry about feeding. I tend to spend more on the two calibers and not really focusing on one to get "good" with. I would rather simplify. Is it a good trade to sacrifice 2 for 1? I am really interested in going Sig. Michael, really want your thoughts since I know you have put some time in with both the PT1911 and the M&P .40.
Thanks

There is nothing wrong with the pistols you have.  But, the Sig P226 9mm is one of the all time best combat pistols.

For myself, I'd rather own only the Sig, but I'm a gun snob that way.  Owning guns isn't always about what is "best" or "makes sense."  It's about finding that which moves your soul... as long as it's reliable, which the Sig is.

I intended to tell you to keep what you have, but I see I've written exactly the opposite.  Well, there you go.  Best compromise is sell the Taurus, keep the Smith, buy the Sig.

Getting a 9mm would be trading down, not up. Just my $.02 worth.

I got a dog for my wife. I traded up.  ;D

Comments like this have always given me a chuckle, but last week we went to head up north.  My dog jumped in the passenger seat and looked at the wife like "what do you want?"  If wife got to the pick up first, my dog would either try to force her out of the seat or give her the look.  If wife was in her, I mean the dog's seat, the dog would get in the drivers seat, and when I would tell her to move she would shove the wife out of the way.

Thankfully the wife has taken this well and is just telling everyone she learned that there is another woman in my life.  ;D  She is accepting that the dog gets to lay on the couch with me, but has drawn the line and said the dog CAN  NOT  EVEN  THINK  OF  GOING  INTO  THE  BEDROOM!

I'm not sure where you want to end up with this. If you're a person who just wants a couple of guns or if it's "the more the merrier" there's a difference there. I'm not sure which you carry now, although I'm sure the LCP is one of them. That is currently having a recall (oops!...sorry, "upgrade").

I have a 9m M&P that I've been shooting hard and it's reliable, accurate and reasonably light. If I were you I wouldn't necessarily get rid of that.Never had a Taurus 1911 but I hear they're pretty good. I've got a Sig 1911 and it's a wonderful piece. It would be pretty big to carry, but if you like that platform you might want to think about a Springfield EMP or Para- the little PDA or warthog or whatever they call them.

You mentioned Sig. I know MB has some issues with Sig, but they really are a proven platform. I have a 2022 9m that has about 6500 rounds through it and it's rock-solid. The 226 is a workhorse as are many other models. They're not particularly carry-friendly though.
I know a few retired LEO that swear by the little Kahr 45.

The way things are now you might want to keep what you have and invest in the 9 also.
