With the election going the way it did it's important to remember, our Veterans serve "We the people" not an administration. They serve to defend America, not a particular regime.

As a Veteran, I want to say the Thank Yous are appreciated, but that it was my honor to serve.
To the men and women currently serving, you have my thanks for taking over when it was my time to Stand Down.
Thank you all for your your commitment.
There is a company that supports Veterans each year on Veterans Day and each year I get misty eyed over it.
That company is Golden Corral Restaurants. Each Veteran's Day, Veterans eat free there, no questions asked.
While I am not a big fan of their food, I am moved each year by the support they show.

Living here in FL, without the wife, (temporarily), I was invited by a fellow marine electrician that is also a member of the local VFW to a dinner and drinks. He is a Vietnam Vet and he and I are working on the same boat. He shoots from time to time, and is pissed about the election, and has never heard of DRTV!
Well, he's getting ready to retire (semi) next year, and I'll be sure to let these guys know about this forum. I feel honored to be invited to a gathering on a very special day, with a such a honored group.
All the Veterans here at this forum, have my utmost respect and gratitude. Thank You and God Bless You and your families.
On a side note,
We are losing WWII veterans at an astonishing rate to ravages of time, and the ones that are at the 'ol VFW will be in for quite a treat as I hear a local Harley- Davidson (of course), chapter is showing up for a tribute in their honor.
For my Grandfather, a WWII, and Korean War veteran, who is missed to this day, I'll save a "chair" for him to have a cold one and smile like only he could.
One of my favorite pictures of all time: (http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm182/twyacht/kiss-1.jpg) God Bless.

Another Restaurant to consider, though I believe a tie may be warranted for dinner! (I don't own one personally!)

I served in the Army Reserve in the '80's, but I am in awe of the young men and women who serve our country today. My service was insignificant compared to their's. I deserve no thanks. They deserve all the thanks, love, and support we as a country can muster.
Yes you do!
Thank you! Without the Reserve Units and National Guard we would be in serious trouble in the Middle East!

We had a Golden Corral restaraunt here but it went out of business. When I went there on Veteran's Day years ago I turned around and left because the line went all the way around the building.
This year I'm getting $40 in free play from a nearby casino. http://www.saganing-eagleslanding.com/location.htm Anyone with a military ID or discharge papers can show up from 12.00am - 11:59pm and get $40 credit just by showing your DD-214, ID, etc. There are over 20 casinos in Mchigan but I don't know if any of the others are doing that.

Just A Common Soldier
He was getting old and paunchy; And his hair was falling fast, And he sat around the Legion, Telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he had fought in, And the deeds that he had done. In his exploits with his buddies; They were heroes, everyone.
And 'tho sometimes, to his neighbors, His tales became a joke. All his buddies listened, For they knew whereof he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer, For ol' Bob has passed away, And the world's a little poorer, For a soldier died today.
He won't be mourned by many, Just his children and his wife. For he lived an ordinary... Very quiet sort of life.
He held a job and raised a family, Quietly going on his way. And the world won't note his passing, 'Tho a Soldier died today.
When politicians leave this earth, Their bodies lie in state. While thousands note their passing, And proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell of their life stories, From the time that they were young. But the passing of a soldier, Goes unnoticed, and unsung.
Is the greatest contribution, To the welfare of our land, Some jerk who breaks his promise, And cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow, Who in times of war and strife, Goes off to serve his Country... And offers up his life?
The politician's stipend, And the style in which he lives, Are sometimes disproportionate, To the service he gives.
While the ordinary soldier, Who offered up his all, Is paid off with a medal, And perhaps a pension...small.
It's so easy to forget them, For it is so long ago, That our Bob's and Jim's and Johnny's, Went to battle, but we know.
It was not the politicians, With their compromise and ploys; Who won for us the freedom, That our Country now enjoys.
Should you find yourself in danger, With your enemies at hand; Would you really want some cop-out, With his ever waffling stand?
Or would you want a Soldier, Who has sworn to defend, His home, his kin and Country, And would fight until the end?
He was just a common Soldier, And his ranks are growing thin. But his presence should remind us, We may need his like again.
For when countries are in conflict, Then we find the Soldier's part, Is to clean up all the troubles, That the politicians start.
If we cannot do him honor, While he's here to hear the praise. Then at least let's give him homage, At the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline, In the paper that might say, "OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING, FOR A SOLDIER DIED TODAY."

I had juggled my day to attend Veterans Day programs (two) and a supper this evening, and now because of the weather everything has been cancled :'(
Heard on the radio that I can get a refund on the meal ticket for the Legion supper that was canceled, but I think they can keep my donation.
Appropriate to have gloomy weather as we remember the sacrafice made by so many so we can be FREE!

As I've been typing I've been listening to Trace. I don't know if it is age or what, but every year it gets tougher and tougher to do Veteran's services, lately I've been getting a strange feeling everytime we drive into or even start planning for Fort Snelling, and I can't make it through this song ever since visiting Arlington last fall.
Age - Maybe, awarness - could be, flat out disgust with people over their treatment of our leaders and soldiers - probably, or the lack of wisdom expressed last Tuesday - partially. I don't know which it is, but it is painful to think of what others have given for me :'(

Hey Everyone- Thank you for all the kind words. I would also like to thank all those past Vets that paved the way for us today.
For all those Vietnam Vets had to suffer with people not understanding PTSD and doing the hard work to make places like the VA accountable and start to learn how to treat us. I thank you.
For all the WWII vets that came home and showed the world the work ethic of an American Soldier, and made America what it was and still is today. I thank you.
For all those that went into Korea and Bosnia are always over looked cause their war wasn't as "Glamorous". I thank you.
For those that Stormed into Kuwait and fought in the Darkness of Burnt Oil and saved an entire Race of People. I thank you.
And for those that I got to serve next to, the ones that I was in firefights with, the ones that helped bring me home but ultimately stayed "Over There," the ones that have been forced to go on their 4th and 5th tours, the ones that saved my life when I thought I was done for in Mosul. I thank you.
For all those that served in Peace time and stayed mentally and physically tough and made all the other Countries of the world afraid to attack us cause of your strength, I thank you.
One last one for all of YOU here at Downrange for giving me what you have. Your friendships and support has made me a better man. So I thank you.

Yes, well said Ksail101.
I went to get a haircut today and the gentleman that cuts my hair (when I don't do it myself) is a Veteran. On my way out, I said "thank you for serving this country". He looked at me kind of funny. He told me that I was the first person that had said those words to his face in a long time. I thought how sad it is that more people don't speak up. It's not enough just to think it, we need to say it more. Veterans, past present, living, and passed on are what built this country and now maintains our freedom.
From the original Revolution to Iraq, we are what we are because of you.
Thanks, again.

And before the day is over.........................
THE HISTORY OF VETERANS DAY
1918 World War I, then normally referred to simply as The Great War (no one could imagine any war being greater!), ended with the implementation of an armistice [temporary cessation of hostilities_in this case until the final peace treaty, the infamous Treaty of Versailles, was signed in 1919] between the Allies and Germany at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of November, 1918.
1919 November 11: President Wilson proclaims the first Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations_" The original concept for the celebration was for the suspension of business for a two minute period beginning at 11 A.M., with the day also marked by parades and public meetings.
1920 On the second anniversary of the armistice, France and the United Kingdom hold ceremonies honoring their unknown dead from the war. In America, at the suggestion of church groups, President Wilson names the Sunday nearest Armistice Day Sunday, on which should be held services in the interest of international peace.
1921 Congress passes legislation approving the establishment of a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. November 11 is chosen for the date of the ceremony. According on October 20, Congress declares November 11, 1921 a legal Federal holiday to honor all those who participated in the war. The ceremony was conducted with great success.
1926 Congress adopts a resolution directing the President to issue an annual proclamation calling on the observance of Armistice Day. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, most states establish November 11 as a legal holiday and at the Federal level, an annual proclamation is issued by the President.
1938 Congress passes legislation on May 13 making November 11 a legal Federal holiday, Armistice Day. The United States has no _actual_ national holidays because the states retain the right to designate their own holidays. The Federal government can in fact only designate holidays for Federal employees and for the District of Columbia. But in practice the states almost always follow the Federal lead in designation of holidays.
1941- 1945 1950- 1953 World War II and the Korean War create millions of additional war veterans in addition to those of the First World War already honored by Armistice Day.
1954 On June 1, President Eisenhower signs legislation changing the name of the legal holiday from Armistice Day to Veteran_s Day.
1968 Congress passes the Monday Holiday Law which established the fourth Monday in October as the new date for the observance of Veteran_s Day. The law is to take effect in 1971.
1971-1975 The Federal observance of Veterans Day is held on the fourth Monday of October. Initially all states follow suit except Mississippi and South Dakota. Other states changed their observances back to November 11 as follows: 1972- Louisiana and Wisconsin; 1974- Kentucky, Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, South Carolina, West Virginia; 1975- California, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, West Virginia, Wyoming
1975 Legislation passed to return the Federal observance of Veteran_s Day to November 11, based on popular support throughout the nation. Since the change to the fourth Monday in October, 46 states had either continued to commemorate November 11 or had reverted back to the original date based on popular sentiment. The law was to take effect in 1978.

Just a LITTLE bit slanted M'ette, While it's REASONABLY accurate, "Yankee vandals" ? Please. And it wasn't "The South" that hung John Brown, It was the US government, By chance, the Captain entrusted with suppressing JB WAS of southern birth (Robert E. Lee) He was an Officer of the FEDERAL Army not a state of Virginia militia officer and the troops he led were a Company of US Marines, Federal not state troops.

It isn't really WRONG on anything just the tone. Darn, M'ette, now I have to let my hat out a notch, maybe two ;D
One thought that came to mind was that the intent of the Founding Fathers was that the army was supposed to remain small, dominated by State militias, it's only purpose was intended to be the defense of America IN America. If a service was to become large and be deployed overseas it was intended to be the Navy, with it's integral land force the Marines. It was not really practical to deploy the Army as they did not have their own transport, If they needed to rely on the Navy for mobility, why not just use the Marines who were already familiar with Navy methods and were already aboard ships.
