Michael,
Instead of your flattop .223, how about a M1 Carbine? Short, light, 30 rd magazines, rail handguard available for the red dot. If you hand load, you could adapt a TAP bullet, otherwise non FMJ are available (e.g. 110gr Soft Point from Georgia Arms) Plus, since it's not a current military round (with small exceptions) surplus is still cheap.
A weapon mounted flashlight might be a problem unless someone makes a bayonet mount for one. (unless you went with an aftermarket stock that had rails like the Promag) You can't get a folding stock for the AR platform. With it, the m1 Carbine is really short for inside maneuvers. The round is most likely quieter than .223.

the ear protection is a great idea but where would someone look for suppressors?
And does anyone make a holster for you pistol that you could connect to the rail so you'd have your entire home defense protection together for those middle of the night issues if you'd have to go get junior out of his room?

I've said before that the M1 Carbine is one of the most underrated self-defense firearm ever made...we had an interesting thread on the blog a couple of years ago where some really high-speed people, both military and LEO, wrote in to "testify" for the Carbine...remember, Jim Cirillo used a cut-down Carbine in his days in NYPD, and he told me he NEVER had any complaints about the gun or the cartridge. The whole story of a how a cartridge with the ballistics of the venerated 125-grain .357 police load came to be called an underpowered whimp is pretty interesting — essentially, the post-WW2 American gunwriters were in the pockets of various and sundry gun companies, and they needed something to criticize to maintain their cred. The Mi Carbine/.30 Carbine round fit the bill...it was out of production; most of the ammo available was military ball, which was over-penetrative and best of all, it was OLD in a period of time when NEW was worshiped.
A rifle-mounted light isn't a necessity, just a convenience...a flashlight in the weak hand on the forearm works almost as well, especially with these light-recoiling guns.
I think I'll get one of the new little guns from Auto-Ordnance and do a bunch of DOWN RANGE stuff with it...

Sounds like a great plan man. Just hope it is not another tear-jerker. :D

Having just received a CMP M1 Carbine, I +1 the idea of seeing one on Down Range. Now if I only could figure out how to put the oiler in the slot I'd be good to go. Anyone know the procedure?
-
I missed the 6/13 podcast. Is there anyway to catch podcasts that you missed the week before?? I also just got an M1 Carbine. Mine's a universal.

use the oiler as the sing post in the stock. If you have any questions on how just look at most backpacks or other straps around objects and you will get the idea pretty quick. If futher questions PM me.

Just click on the podcast on the home page. It will take you to the current podcast but the older ones are listed there and you can choose one of them.
I have a Uni 30 too. Bought it new back in 74.

Cool! Thanks!
I just got my Carbine a month or 2 ago from a pawn shop a friend of mine works at. Paid $270 for it.

This question is for Michael, what folding stock would you chose for your AK. I have a SLR95 milled reciever and I am looking for a new setup.
-
I recently saw what I think was the Galil-pattern side-folder from http://www.gunaccessories.com and I really liked it...not sure whether it's available for a milled receiver or not. Unimak ( http://www.unimak.com ) also makes a really sturdy side-folder. You might be able to get a receiver block for one of the SOCOM side-folders from http://www.riflestocks.com, but DARN they are expensive!. If you're a minimalist, look around for the Romanian side-folder, usually around $50 and gen-u-wine Easr Bloc styling!

I know. That's why I Jumped on it! Even though I really couldn't afford to buy another gun at the time. I knew it was way too good to pass on.
