Yeah, I know, I live in Jersey and that's my fault, but until I can sell out and get out of here I'm stuck. We've already got CRAZY gun laws, handgun restrictions in particular, but it just got worse.
In NJ to buy a handgun you have to have a firearms ID card, which I have. You then must request a pistol purchase application for each handgun you wish to buy. Then when you buy a handgun, you present the application which they fill out, and then they do a NCIS (sic) check to make sure you have committed no crimes nor gone insane since your last purchase. In NJ they can't call the free FBI line...they have to go through our state police, which is a $16 charge.
I was in my local PD (where I am well known) to get a small mixup on my FID card fixed. They had one number wrong on my street address. Dealers would occasionally comment on it, but the other day a guy at Dick's refused to sell me a brick of 22LR because of it so I figured, "Better get it straightened out".
So I get it straightened out, and I say, "Hey, while I"m here, how about two pistol permits". Usually they say "Sure!" , fill them out, the chief signs them, and I"m on my way. Not today.
NJ and our illustrious democrat govorner, Jon Corzine, never miss a trick when it comes to charging more fees. NOW there is a form the applicant must sign that the PD has to send in requesting a background check on the applicant, and a form approving that they can look into my mental history. PLUS it must be accompanied by a money order (no cash or personal checks) for $18. When they get approval, I get my permits. THEN I guess when I go to the dealer and buy, I still have to pay $16 for a NCIS check.
THAT is how they will get us folks...they'll make it so difficult and so expensive, only wealthy democrats will be able to own and shoot firearms.

Sorry to hear about all the BS and how it continues to pile higher and higher.
I agree with your assessment of the difficulties and fees. I believe that is the idea behind "licensing." The idea that you will need to license your firearms just like you do a boat or snowmobile (for you southerners - kinda like a four wheeler except with two skis on the front and a caterpillar track under the rear for riding over white fluffy water we get when it is winter up here). My small boats are $39 for three years, but the fees go up as you get bigger. Think of the fee structure for different guns ???

I took the time to email the governer. They'll probably be here to round me up in the next day or two.
Dear Governor Corzine,
I am a firearm owner. Today I went to get a purchase permit for a handgun and found that there are now MORE restrictive steps and costs associated with my legal, constitutional right to own a firearm.
There are now two forms that must be submitted to the local PD that record my agreement to allow a background check AND mental health background check prior to the issuance of the pistol purchase permit. AND an $18 fee to the state police is required in addition to the costs of the permit.
My background and mental stability were vetted in the process of acquiring a firearms ID card, but now I must pay for repeated checks upon every purpose. That is ludicrous. AND this cost and investigation is in ADDITION to the telephone check (at a cost of $16) that the dealer must make to the state police upon the purchase of a handgun. That is TWO background checks on ME for each handgun purchase. Meanwhile not ONE weapon has been removed from the possession of criminals, not ONE less crime committed, nor any relief from the rampant gang activity that plagues our state.
I respectfully suggest that you and your administration stop penalizing upstanding citizens for excercising their constitutional rights and focus your efforts on attacking and eliminating criminal groups and behaviour, and finance your insatiable appetite for revenue by confiscating the assets of the criminal gangs.
This is just one more TAX on the citizens and one more slap in the face of law abiding firearm owners.

jaybet...I'm a Democrat (No I didn't vote for HIM!) you mean I'm going to be wealthy someday? Better hurry, I just hit 62!!!!!

I think you may have just failed the mental background check. No, I am not making a joke.
-
Jay, Corzine probably forwarded that to the new Head of the Civilian Defense Force. Let us know what the uniforms look like.
I left Jersey years ago. It was insane then, but it's apparently getting ready to check itself in for evaluation. Next thing you know, they'll add a new law making the additional checks necessary after the issue of your permit. And since your permit can't be issued until you get the new checks...
Oh, btw -what happened to the banning of .50 cal and greater rifles? That was aimed at the Barrett, but obviously would make almost all black powder rifles illegal.

Interpretation in Minnesota is 12 ga and 20 ga shotguns as well. At first they said only rifled barrels, but then they told Department of Natural Resources they were going to reconsider smooth barrel as well due to the availability of rifled slugs for greater accuracy.

Wait until they start making you go to a psychiatrist BEFORE you purchase a firearm. The American Psychiatric Association defines mental illness in American. Then all the APA has to do is define "shooters syndrome" as an inclination to violent behavior. Bingo. No more shooters overnite. The APA is as radical as you can get. I don't put it past them. Everyone is SOOO happy about Heller, but don't realize how much ground has been lost already. The Anti's are going to run circles around the NRA and pro gun groups.
NJ is bad but take a look at the fees for Nassau County NY.
$200 processing fee
$94.25 fingerprint fee
Personal Interview (make sure you say the right things !)
4 personal references outside of family
Then this is right off the PD website
Pistol Licenses will be processed as quickly as possible. Present waiting time is 6 months.
We will send you notice as soon as your license is ready.
PLEASE DO NOT CALL [/b]
-
Take away the anti's talking points of "common sense" and "reasonable," and please try and explain to the rest of this how all these requirements, fees and time frames are not an "infringement.
-
All of these regulations remind me of what was done in the South in the 1960's to keep blacks from voting. I think some lawsuits need to filed and some pro-gun legislators (if there are any in NJ and MN) need to be elected.
If all fails, come to Florida where I am at. I live in the "Wild West" here, where "blood runs in the street" everyday, and it's mayhem and pandemonium by the hour. And, this is for you TAB, you can shoot and own full auto weapons. An experience almost as good as sex! Oh yes, we have no state income tax either..... ;D
-
I would think this is a 14th Amendment case waiting to happen. Why are rights strongly curtailed in one state but free to others in other states? It's a toss up between state's rights and Federal powers. Interesting Constitutional conundrum.
Not to make anyone feel bad, but here in ND, if I want a gun, I go to the store, fill out the form, show them the CCW and my DL, pay for the gun, and go home. The CCW gets me a pass on having to wait for the NCIS check. No fees, no psycho exams, no nothing else.
The CCW took a 10-question test, a photograph, a short form, a check for $30 to the private tester (amount is set by law), and a small fee - $50 maybe) to the County Sheriff. Then, maybe 20 day wait as it went through the AG office, and voila - a card in the mail. Good for 5 years.
It is a tough choice, and I thought long and hard before leaving the people's republik of illinois/cook county - run away or fight the fight. I left. It's an individual call.
Good luck to all.

You just had to get that dig in there, didn't you? :'(
-
A background check to get a form so that you can get a background check!
What the hell ever happened to "shall not be infringed"?!?!?
-
Kentucky is pretty much like North Dakota, according to what Pathfinder posted. Our CCW test is more than 10 questions, however, and there is also a live fire portion. The gun purchasing procedure is the same though. I go to my local gun shop, pick out my gun, show them my CCW and drivers license, and leave a happy man 10 minutes later. Now if we could just work on that income tax like Florida. ;D

I thought NH was the last state in the union without a state income tax, do you have a sales tax ?
As for buying a gun in NH , pick, pay, fill out form and show ID, wait for phone call ccw or not, then take gun home.
CCW, 3 references, $10, 10 days, They have never checked my references.
Oh yeah, No sales tax and ALL NFA OK ;D

Yes, we have a state sales tax. :( You guys rock in NH when it comes to guns! :) I think the state motto is "Live Free or Die", right?

I think we should all adopt Alabama's motto "We Dare Defend Our Rights."
A Million Gun Owners March on every State Capital in the Union, "We Dare Defend Our Rights" on the front of your shirts, and "The Second Amendment - The Original Homeland Security" (from the NRA) on the back of our shirts. No open carry of guns, no outrageous chants, and no intimidation (however, just the fact we are talking guns will scare many). Just a quiet unified show of numbers in support of not removing our Rights and Freedoms.

Okay GA has income tax and sales tax, but we were one of the first states with must issue CCW. Actually I think one of the model states going back over 30 years. No exam, no classes, no hassle, fill out form with name, address and swear you're not otherwise ineligible. In my county I think it's $32 all payable to the probate court clerk. That includes the fingerprint cost. When you buy a gun, the CCW and DL is all you need to bypass NICs.

Sure is, but the Dums are trying to change it to "We want to be Northern Mass again" :(

In New Mexico you go to your gun dealer, choose what you want and they run the NCIS check. When cleared you get your toy. You don't have to show any permits, licenses, CCW to buy. For CCW, you apply, take a course, pass it, pay your money and you get your CCW. We have income tax and sales tax, not good but not too bad. In Texas, they have no income tax but high sales taxes. Comes out the same.

CCW not required in ND, just let's you walk out that much faster without having to wait on the call.
ND does have a low sales tax (5% + 1% local) and an income tax (3%) - even on retirement income. I will not retire here, will move to a non-income tax state.

I vote for NH's motto. "Live Free or Die" just captures the essence of being an American to me.
I remember being Rio de Janerio, Brazil, at a show. Part of the performance played the "national" songs from countries from around the world. The crowd went crazy when they played a song that is from Cuba and were totally silent when they played New York, New York. I never felt more proud to be an American at that moment. I realized alot of people in this world just hate us because they aren't in first place like we are.

I found out a little further information on the new forms, which are not new after all.
The state has always required the two forms and the $18 fee, but it could be waived by the local police chief if he/she deemed that appropriate. Since NJ is SO broke and spends SO much money anyway, they decided to remove the chief's disgression on waiving the forms and collect the money and the forms on each permit acquisition.
So it's not gun control...it's moneygrubbing.
I'm so relieved....
