Title: Know what's more exciting than purchasing a PIF/utility rifle? Now with porn
Post by: Fatman on November 25, 2008, 07:28:11 PM
Tracking its travel progress at UPS!  It successfully passed through Hodgkins, Illinois right under the Gun Grabber in Chiefs nose and is safely in PA on its way to my dealer.

I feel like a kid at Christmas.  ;D

My last order of ammo went through DesMoines :(  Usually it goes north to Chicago and then west.  My DPMS stuff never gets close to Chi Town being as close as we are, but maybe in honor of the President Elect I may start doing special routing just for the hell of it  ;D

Expecting a call tomorrow saying the rifle is in.  This will be interesting as it's my first AR experience, hopefully I'll get to the range sometime soon to break it in.  ;D

If I post porn, I'll try to keep my toe out of the picture.

It's here! Picked it up today, and the guy behind the counter had a bonus for me. Two Brownells 30 round mags w/the chrome silicone springs he saved for me from the last shipment he got in.   :)

Ok, now I have more questions.  Like, ummm, neat the carry handle comes off for mounting a scope. But that big ole front sight seems to be kinda where the scope would be pointed.

Will the scope just be higher than the sight, or do I have to remove it also?

*Gets cutting torch and files ready*  ;D

If you put a scope on it will be pointed right at the front sight. You have several choices.

1. Don't put a scope on.
2. Put a scope on and look at the front sight.
3. Lop off the front sight with a hacksaw.
4. Replace the front sight with a Picatinny base so you can put a front sight on when you want to.
5. Put a scope on top of a riser then get a cheekpiece high enough to actually see through the scope.

I chose option 1 on one rifle and option 3 on another. Option 1 and 5 aren't going to happen even if I buy another rifle.

That's actually a mugshot of the guy who shot his lawnmower, but I have bad hair days every day so I don't look much different.

I just ordered the Brownell's front sight tool so I can change out my front sight (ordered by mistake instead of the no-sight option) - just punch 2 pins out and replace with a new YHM folder front sight to get it out of the way of the optics. Best of both worlds, Haz.

And for God's sake, use a Dremel, not a hacksaw!!   ;D

Sounds good to me.  I saw the pins, but the sight looks like it was part of the barrel, lol.

Dremel shmemel. By the time I filed, sanded, and blued it that thing looked a lot nicer than when it was made. I didn't need to buy any extra tools like a Dremel to do it. Now I'm wondering what kind of front sight tool you ordered since it takes a hammer and punch to remove it. I've never seen any special tool for it except a cup-tip punch that doesn't slide off like a flap-tip punch can. Free installation is available from YHM on all their products.

Isn't my sight also the gas block?

YES, but anything above the horizontal part can be cut off.

Me thinks you just like the sound of grinding metal in the morning.  :)

Brownells has a front sight block for knocking the pins out with a punch.  I don't see any other tool.  The YHM sight is a bolt on w/block in it.  After beating the crap out of the pin on my $65.00 Norinco SKS's  hand guard, I'm champing at the bit to smash the sight pins on a $1,000 piece of  Mercan Ingenuity.   :o

The pins are tapered so they only come out one way. If you go the wrong way and hit them hard enough they will enlarge the holes and go in deeper.  :-[  It's not a good idea to work on guns at 3 a.m. like I sometimes do.

The block has a well marked 'in' and 'out' side. Brownells clearly took the 3 a.m. jumbofrank factor into account.

Better have a new gas block handy cuz when you take the sight off you will have a $1000 club.
Cut the two legs of the sight, file sand, refinish.

And maybe put a free float tube over it. A rifle length two-piece tube will fit over the carbine barrel just as easy as a carbine length tube will. I got mine from Brownells.

Wouldn't do me much good as my carry handle does not remove.

I'd have a $1000 charger action.

Strength & Appearance Of Standard Sight; Folds Down When Not Needed

Integral gas block and folding front sight replicates the strength and appearance of the classic factory AR-15/M16 front sight tower, yet folds neatly out of the way when it’s not needed. Patent-pending, weight-saving, all-in-one design; no need to purchase a railed gas block and a separate rail-mount folding sight. Deploys and locks securely open with the flick of a finger—as fast as any flip-up combat sight. To fold, press straight down on the top of the diagonal rear support to release the lock while pulling back on the sight tower. Standard, A2-type sight post is the same height as factory post, so it works with any factory height rear sight. Easy to install; dual clamping rings fit standard .750" diameter barrels, and hex-head bolts (hex wrench included) provide plenty of clamping force to make sure the sight doesn’t shift and change point of aim. Base/gas block of rugged, precision machined steel provides exceptional strength and resistance to erosion by hot gases. Includes bayonet lug, and rear clamping ring drilled to accept sling swivel pin. Aluminum sight post minimizes weight while still providing plenty of strength. Uniform, black finish matches most factory gun finishes.

SPECS: Steel and aluminum, matte black finish. Fits barrels that are .750” O.D. at the gas port.

I really like the YHM folder on mine.  The only problem I have with it though is that since it's bolted not pinned it came slightly offset.  First chance I got to shoot it was a 3 Gun match here.  I couldn't understand why I missed so bad until I went to zero it and found after I got the EOTech zeroed the front sight was in another time zone from the rest of the system.  Marked the barrel to align it and marked the screws to check for movement.

If you're itching to shoot it with a scope to check accuracy, mount it up and try it.
Chances are on a variable scope the front sight won't be visible on anything above 5-6 power. Below that, it's just a dim shadow - not that big of a deal. I shot my Colt with a 3x9 on it for years and it never bothered me. (using an A.R.M.S. throw lever mount)

My R-25 in 308 is on it's way. Didn't get tracking through USPS.  >:(

I didn't read the description, you'll be OK as long as it lines up with the gas port.

That IS messing with you, can't think of any reason it wouldn't other than tolerance accumulation.
