Title: Fun trip
Post by: jaybet on November 30, 2008, 07:50:41 AM
My wife and i will get to do something we've been planning for awhile. Tomorrow we'll be taking the 3-1/2 hour trip to Cabelas in Hamburg PA. We've never been to one, and it's going to be fun. So much fun, in fact, that we will be stopping to pick up my son in law who is as excited as a ten year old at the prospect.

I'll be looking at the used shotguns...thinking about maybe a deal on a used over-under. I'll also be looking at used 223 and 308 just to see what's what...maybe I'll come home with a new toy.

I hear i'ts like Disneyland for outdoors abd shooting types.

jaybet, make sure you have lunch there.  Split different sandwiches so you each can try as many as possible.  Goooood, speaking from experience and I don't like to try different stuff/food!

Enjoy,

Richard

Enjoy the trip, Jay, Cabela's is there to be enjoyed - and used.

Most of the stores are huge, and if you don't experience something akin to being overwhelmed as you walk in, well, there is just something wrong with you!   ;D

Trivia note - Most of the huge bronze sculptures they have out front - bears and such, are made in a small foundry in Lander Wyoming called Eagle Forge. Went there with my son, they were making the huge bears that went to one of the Michigan store. I also discovered they also did the larger than life size cattle drive in front of the Dallas city hall.

Enjoy the trip, I went to the Hartford store a few weeks ago.  I manage to get over there about once a month now.

They have a used/antique gun room that will take some time to browse but a word to the wise...ask before you touch...I made the mistake of taking an original 1894 Winchester out of the cabinet and was pounced on by the protectors of gun room...They were polite but explained the rules too me...

Enjoy it....I love to fish as well so it's a double treat for me.....

Ditto on the lunch, I like the ostrich......

Have a good time.  We have one about 90 miles from us, and I enjoy stopping in a couple times a year.  My standard route is in the front door, and turn right; work my way through the hunting and shooting stuff; a quick browse of the cave in the rear; up stairs through the camping and home stuff; enjoy a snack; back downstairs and continue on through the fishing.  Footwear is just before the fishing, but all the rest of the clothing is in the middle making it easy to avoid or just pop in and out of.  All around the outside edges are diaramas to enjoy, and they also have the mountain in the middle.

Our Cabelas always has a display of "park model" cabins across from the front doors near the big bronze.  If the weather is nice I will go sit in a chair on one of the porches and people watch.  Our Owatonna store used to have an outlet store next door with a big taxidermy shop.  I watched them do a full body elephant in there one year.  They have closed that, and I miss it.

Enjoy the trip!

Never been to Cabelas, but Bass Pro Shop is a lot of fun!

My only advise:
*MAKE SURE YOU GIVE YOURSELF AS MUCH TIME AS YOU CAN TO GET THE FULL EXPERIENCE!

Just take it all in and enjoy!  :)

We have a Gander Mountain that just opened here in Palm Beach.  Absolutely awesome.  The have a firearms collection room full of ultra fine grade collectibles that just makes one drool and the firearms section of the store is the size of 2 normal gun stores.    The wallet definitely stays home when I head to a store like this.   Have fun!

Got to go to the Cabelas in Portland, Maine this fall.   I was impressed with the size and the depth in the gun department.  Not just guns, but in reloading and accessories.

However, my wife was not impressed with the clothing selection and prefers our local Bass Pro Shops.

Have fun.

You should have a lot of fun. Don't forget to be impressed by the walk-through aquarium and the trophy area.

It's about 2 hrs to that store from where I live and I've only gone once since it opened, but it was an great experience.

I go to the store in Buda, Texas regularly to pick up reloading supplies.  They definately have everything you need, and don't need but want.

It is good however to know the value of the used guns you are thinking of buying.  They can run high there.

Do yourself a favor... bring just enough cash to buy the shot gun, leave the credit cards and the check book at home...  Trust me   ;D

I just overdose to the max in the fishing sections...

Speaking of fishing... Thanksgiving Day, Marshal wanted to go out and shoot the 1911 that he is reviewing.. and I wanted to fish.

I am lucky enough to own property where we have lots of woods, a wonderful nice cleared section in the bottom for range shooting and a huge watershed.. so we were both happy that day and I ended up getting about 23 nice big fat huge crappy.. one bass and a bluegill.

Cleaned them all and we are going to have them for supper with some fried taters and onions tonight.

Cabela's.. Bass Pro... Gander Mountain.. Sportsman Warehouse.. big or small stores.. I LOVE 'em...

I only live 80 miles from Cabelas store in Michigan and I've been there a few times. It's a great place to take a road trip with a few friends. The whole place is awesome. Everything from standing under the huge statues, to the aquarium stocked with fish native to the great lakes region. The gun room is like a toy shop for adults only better. One time they had a Gatling gun in the used gun section. They had a few Howdah pistols and some other things you just don't see every day. Or any day.

I'm sorry to report Jaybet won't be able to reply.

He talked them into letting him sleep on a cot in the back of a stock room.

He has his regular pay check direct deposited into his Cabellas Account.

He works there evenings and weekends for food and once a week they give him a list of the items he can afford to buy from his account.

Same here.
Went to a Bass Pro last weekend (about 100 miles away). They had Ruger 10/22's on sale for $180.00, but were out of stock by the time we got there. Still a good visit. Closest Cabela's is in Louisiana, so that's out.  :'(

Having venison chili tonight. Wife's familiy will be over for Christmas get-together (everyone brings a dish). We always do the chili, BBQ, meatballs, and deer sausage dip.
Never any leftovers for me a late-night snack either.... :'(

We've been to that Cabelas a couple times.  The new one in Hartford CT is smaller and the trophy displays and aquarium weren't as good.  We have a BassPro in Baltimore and Gander Mt in fredricksburg both about 90min away.  Love to go to either but the PA Cabelas has MUCH better firearms sections

I still haven't been to Bass Pro Shops and it's only a 35 minute drive. I heard it's well worth it. Gander Mountain is only a few miles away in the suburbs so I can go any day. Too bad the gun prices are higher than regular gun stores.
