As gun sales shoot up around the country, President-elect Barack Obama said Sunday that gun-owning Americans do not need to rush out and stock up before he is sworn in next month.
"I believe in common-sense gun safety laws, and I believe in the second amendment," Obama said at a news conference. "Lawful gun owners have nothing to fear. I said that throughout the campaign. I haven't indicated anything different during the transition. I think people can take me at my word."
But National Rifle Association spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said it's not Obama's words — but his legislative track record — that has gun-buyers flocking to the stores.
"Prior to his campaign for president, his record as a state legislator and as a U.S. Senator shows he voted for the most stringent forms of gun control, the most Draconian legislation, gun bans, ammunition bans and even an increase in federal excise taxes up to 500 percent for every gun and firearm sold," Arulanandam said.
Obama answered "yes" in 1996 to a questionnaire from an Illinois group on whether he supported a handgun ban. But he later said a staffer filled out that answer and he did not support a ban.
Nationally, background checks for gun purchases jumped nearly 49 percent during the week Obama was elected, compared with the same time period last year, according to the FBI's National Instant Background Check System.
Anecdotally, gun dealers around the country have reported spikes in sales. The Illinois State Rifle Association Reports gun sales for November were 38 percent higher than last year.
"We don't dispute [the gun sales hike] because the numbers from the federal system certainly confirm that there is increased activity out there. We just think it's a bit stupid," said Peter Hamm, spokesman for the Brady Campaign against Gun Violence.
"Anyone who thinks they need to rush out and buy a firearm clearly has not been paying attention to how quickly we make progress on this issue. We don't think these are first-time buyers. We think they are people who already have more than enough guns at their homes to protect themselves and are buying more."

I reckon that Obama telling us he won't take our guns is like saying "nice doggie" until you can pick up a rock.

Does this concern anyone as much as it doess me? Even the Brady Bunch is banking on any SCOTUS push about Gun Control being about protection and that "You already have the means so why do you need more?" to push through.

"Common sense" to these dweebs means registration, (so we know where to confiscate them).
One gun a month, year, lifetime or whatever.
Jack the taxes up as high as possible on guns & ammo.
The whole serial numbered bullet fiasco.
Get the unconstitutional D.C. laws enacted everywhere, and the final punchline, ban all private gun ownership.
I'd prefer to take on a bunch of gang bangers rather than Nancy Botox, the BoxStein sisters and Harry 'ain't got a clue' Reid.
The gang bangers are more honest.

He doesn't want you to stock up on guns because it creates more work for them when they come to get them. >:(

Do you think anyone else (the MSM) will admit that the Brady Center is after all of the guns now? Didn't think so either. ::)

We think they are people who already have more than enough guns at their homes to protect themselves and are buying more."
I think you Brady brats have to much time on your hands., and awfully small brains.
-
Well, I got the impression 'from his words' that Obama believes CCW is contrary to common-sense safety laws, as is owning the most flexible rifle platform in the world, as is using a firearm for self defense, even in your own home.
-
I agree that the President-elect's phrase "common sense gun-safety laws" is absurd. If he wants to assure us that he is pro-Sencond Amendment and honestly believes in private citizens owning and using fireams, he knows what he has to do once he takes office. After all, the man is not dumb. Yet, he must think we are dumb considering what he is saying. Sorry, dude, you will have to do better than this to win us over. You cannot snow us the way you did Bill O'Reilly.

They did a piece on the local news here (Illinois) yesterday, and the state police said that most of the increase in sales were first time buyers. Glad they checked the facts. Oh, thats right, the facts don't matter.

YEP!!!

His definition of the second amendment is no where close to ours.
-
Take him at his word?
Which would that be? Should we believe what he has said through his well documented past votes on legislation while being a sworn member of the Illinois and United States Senate, or should we believe what he said over the past 2 years in order to further his career and own personal ambitions?
Beware the politician who says, "Trust me".

He won't do it anyway, except to sign the legislation that is passed because the people want it. It is the legislators that will hand it to him. Those are the ones to put the pressure on. NO COMPROMISES!!!

So Obama says not to stock up on guns because we can take him at his word? I guess he thinks we are naive like John McCain when he pledged that he would accept public financing and later reneged.
I think I'm going to place an order for another rifle.....

I disagree.... I think it will come through activist judges -- SCOUS

Two additional ways he might complete that thought come to mind.
"I want you to turn them in voluntarily."
or
"I don't want to, but I'm going to have to."
-
He will try a 'common sense' EO & let the courts sort it out.

Flood them with a constant stream of letters, e-mails, and phone messages (like they did to us before the election!).

I've already started~ >:(

Go ahead and start sending them to the White house (addressed to Mr. Obama).
Maybe by the time he moves in, there will be several thousand letters for his people to open.
Don't put anything on the outside of the envelope that would give a hint as to the purpose of the letter (so they will open it BEFORE they throw it away).
-
It's too late Mr. Obama, I've already stocked up. ;D
