Sometimes it is hard to pick a catagory for a topic ...
I was wearing my NRA Lifer Member jacket this morning and experienced something less than pleasant :'(
I have been confronted on my views and beliefs on many topics in the past, and I have had my pickup assaulted because of its NRA sticker, but this morning hit me harder than ever before. I was at the post office, and someone made a smart comment about my jacket. He went on to say I should have a hat too, and I could just as well be carrying a rifle. I didn't know whether he was joking positive or negative or what ... it really caught me off guard. Then a fine peace loving lady started in on the evils of guns, and how gun lovers are responsible for all these deaths (no explanation of what deaths, but I'm sure we are immortal if it wern't for guns).
Another went on to say how no one should be allowed to carry in public. I don't reveal when I am carrying anyway, but being in the post office I did not want to even hint. All I said was a very loud, angry "If someone were to come in here shooting you would damn happy if I were here with a gun!" I left without doing my business.
Later in the day I went back to take care of business, and the clerks were quiet ... real quiet.
I have even heard from a couple people in stores what went on ... Small town ... you gotta love it.
Not a good experience, but so far I've survived.

M, I hear what you are saying. I don't even think anyone even listen to themselves anymore! "I heard it on tv so it must be true." ::) :'(
What ever happened to thinking for yourself?

M,
Fire back! Ask for their stats. Hit 'em with your own (pools more dangerous, gun stopping crimes 1.5 MILLION times a year per FBI stats etc). DON"T let 'em run you off.
-
Their ignorance is bliss. I have had my truck windows with my NRA stickers knocked out two times.
-
I have to have a permit to carry my firearm in public, idiots should have to have a permit to open their mouths in public.
And, +1 on what everyone else has said.

I had a blue raspberry slurpy poured all over the driver's seat of my jeep, and later found out the NRA plate had been ripped off the front bumper.
Amazing how tolerant and brave these people are.
As to your situation, m58, I usually say something like, 'sorry to disappoint you, but none of the gun owners I know are responsible for a single death. You must run with a rough crowd.'

If they bothered to actually know the laws they would know you not allowed to carry in a Post Office!
-
What a retarded Federal law! You mean we have to drag our mail and parcels in? UPS for me from now on.

It's always fun to wear NRA logo apparel here in liberal, sunny, southern Kalifornia. I get a lot of pleasure from all of offended looks on the faces of the soccer moms, when I pick my daughter up from pre-school. OK, I guess I get pleasure from all of the dirty looks. I can't afford enough windows to put a sticker on my car here.
We've got the University of California, Irvine here and I always thought that college was where you were supposed to taught to use your mind - here they're just taught to think like the professors.
UCI - The University of Communist Indoctrination
BTW - It was a lot of fun getting Prop 8 passed here too!

Hi M58,
Though I am not absolutely certain, but carrying inside a Post Office is a federal crime. Maybe you already know but I thought I would raise that issue. I would hate for you to be arrested for something like that....Massad Ayoob advises that putting stickers on your vehicle is not a good idea for this very reason.
I sure hope you don't have anymore incidents like this.....

You'll note that I did not say I was actually carrying. The postmaster is a friend, and she know I can carry. She also has never asked, but I do not carry when I go into the PO to do business. There are a lot of times I carry right past signs, but schools, courthouses, etc. are on my don't carry list (just like I will not even pass a drink to someone if I am carrying).
The stickers on the pickup are limited to one NRA sticker. I'm not a big sticker fan, but I haven't completely quit showing my feelings. The NRA jacket is also worn only in certain areas. It is one thing to not be a cowering sheep in the face of danger, but it is another to wear a sign that says "shoot me first."
I'm usually pretty good at debating with these people, but I'm not sure if it was the setting, Monday morning or a long hard weekend that got me and almost left me speechless. I've got the basics down (you have all seen me throw them out on here) that I can throw out, and I can either get them the hard copy in depth that day or they can follow me to my office for them right now.
I have been thinking that this type of confrontation was going to happen more and more following the election results. However, I did not think I would do so badly on the first post election confrontation. Oh well ... at least I know where I need to improve.

I give it back to them, "I carry a gun so irresponsible people like YOU can get away with NOT carrying one" "Doctors kill 100,000 people a year, are they "evil" to?", Some times I'll ask if there are any other Civil Rights they oppose, like maybe racial equality, Freedom of speach or Womens Suffrage, or if I'm feeling pissy I just ask if they were born stupid or did they have to work at it.
The type of people you encountered usually cross the street when they see me coming ;D

I typically wear an IDPA hat when I am out and about. It rarely crosses my mind that I am doing so. I have never had a negative reaction, but have had several POSITIVE reactions. The most recent was at a grocery store when the acting manager, who was bagging, asked if I still did that? I asked,"still did what?" He pointed to the hat. That started a discussion, and I always end by inviting them out to the club.
That scenario has played out about 7 or 8 times in the last couple of years.

I'd have thought that out here in flyover country (aka rural America) the reception would've been more positive. Although I DID have a caller during a commercial break in my radio show yesterday morning who said she didn't know why anybody felt the need to carry a gun. I explained to her that, while I fully support her right to NOT go armed, I place a higher value than that on my life, and the lives of those around me. She got pissy and hung up.

When I was in a similar situation I looked person right in the eye and in a very quiet even voice I explained, "That were it not for the fact that have a gun I would not be alive today. Were it not for the fact that I own a gun my wife and children would not be alive today. If it weren't for that fact that my mother can use a gun she would not be alive today. I am sorry you would wish us all dead."
That pretty much shut her up.

Sorry to hear you are having this issue. People could stand to be a tad more neighborly.

Especially to the folks with guns! I guess that "Protected by Smith & Wesson" sticker doesn't really make a good deterrent to vandals anymore.

An armed society, by all reasoning, should be a polite society.
But, alas, I fear there are just too many idiots in the gene pool these days.

I guess, they don't know your occupation. ;D ;D ;D

Sorry for your problem. Have one myself. Our local newspaper has a feature called "Sound Off" where people call in and speak whats on their minds without having to leave a name and the paper prints it - they reserve the right to edit and/or exclude. Someone called in to say that certain staff members at a local school had taken CCW instruction and were licensed to carry hinting that they carried on school property. I called in to say that that was great because they had to pass a background check and they were taught that it was a crime to carry on school property and that only criminals brought guns into a "GUN FREE" zone. Hasn't been published yet but I'm still waiting to see if they will.
Richard
PS: Our law has been modified to state that I can carry on school property if I am dropping someone off or picking them up but I cannot get out of the car. Good change.
-
Caught "Uncle Ted" while channel surfing earlier. Had a clip of him on a talk show stating his views on right to carry. Good info for us to remember.
For those that have forgotten or never heard Ted's belief on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, he believes that if you are not a convicted felon, and do not have a restraining order or order of protection against you, the Second Amendment is your certificate to carry a concealed weapon!
Time to read more Ted before I get confronted again.

Sounds a lot like it is here in my neck of the woods......our paper does the same thing, and we have a similar law.
