Title: What Shotgun should I buy?
Post by: long762range on December 11, 2008, 09:04:17 PM
My wife has agreed with me that I need a new shotgun for 3-gun matches.   ;D

What should I buy that will not cost the same as a house payment?

What class do you want to shoot in?

I might ask what your old shotgun was??

I use the Remingtons, ll00's or 1187's, not too expensive and tons of accessories, mag tubes, oversize bolt handles, oversized safety's, speed loaders and other loading devices, optical mounts, stocks, and easy to do trigger jobs, that come out to 2 lbs. In most matches the theoretical speed difference is not necessary as the targets are far enough apart to negate the differential between the speed of a Remington vs a Benelli or Beretta, and they shoot softer, if you want to shoot pump class I would still pick the Remington 870 for all the previous reasons. I do have a Benelli M1 Super 90, with a 10 shot tube, and the recoil impulse just throws me off, and the sight picture with adjusting the stock still does not get me on line with the target, and the trigger is very much like an M1 garand in concept , and is not light at all. Accessories are high, and not as ergonomic.

Just my 2 cents, but I have shot a lot of tactical shotgun.

Message me if you want specifics.

What do you guys think of the Mossberg 930 SPX? The price is certainly right...

I use a Stag AR carbine for the rifle and a Springfield 1911 for the pistol.  I have been using a Remington 1100 for the shotgun but we switch from slugs to birdshot  in the same stage which causes the poor old thing to clutch its chest.

I do not use optics on any of the weapons.

I personally am older and heavier than most of the competitors.  I have been called by most who see me "Slow but deadly".

Maybe an 11-87 will do better than the 1100. It's "new and improved", right?

I've always liked Mossberg, though I've never tried one of their semi's.

Long762, which length barrel do you have? 1100's are more prone to hiccup with the shorter barrels, I ran a 24" Hastings barrel on my 1100 and a 28" factory light contour on the 1187, both are very reliable, I do clean the gas ports religiously, and keep the gas o'ring inspected and replace as needed. You might just get a new barrel for the 1100, and have mucho dollars for accessories and ammo.
