I'm so excited, I can't stand myself. My brother has some experience with guns since he has hunted a little, however, today he started looking at handguns and is getting interested in the shooting sports. (I guess he just wants to be like his stunningly handsome, undeniably loveable brother.) :D Unfortunately, the guy he spoke to at the gun shop suggested he buy a S&W 638. ??? Yeah, a snubbie for his first handgun. This just means big bro gets to bring another into the fold, as well as assist in shopping for a new firearm. ;D So, Christmas has come early for me this year and as the saying goes, I'm happier than a puppy with two... well, you get the idea. 8)

So you have two brothers?

No, I was just blessed with an ego big enough for two. Hey, if no one else likes me atleast I have myself. ;D

S&W 638 is a good first piece.
Point, pull trigger...little gun goes BANG.....simple, no frills, easy to clean...inexpensive...

Don't get me wrong, I love the .38 snubbies. I have a 642 that I use as a CCW. However, for someone buying their first handgun, it would not be my reccomendation due to the short sight radius and relative skill and practice required to shoot it. Also, most people find the recoil of the snubbies to be uncomfortable (I'm not one of them) and I want my brother to enjoy shooting his first handgun so he may fall in love with the sport as I have.

Much the same reason I started the 12 year old grandson with a .22 instead of a .30/06.

100% correct.
Have fun shopping and have fun with your brother as you both make shooting memories together.

I would reccomend a Ruger Mark III or 22/45 or whatever your favorite brand of .22 is. If his first handgun just has to be a centerfire I think he should get a 4" .357 and only shoot .38s in it.

+1. I have a 686 that is a perfect weight to make .38 recoil very tame and the trigger isn't overwhelming in double action..very smooth. A nice step up.

Yes, what JFrank said.
Good luck, and welcome your brother to the club. :D

Well, I guess great minds do think alike... or sick minds. Anyway, my brother actually expressed interest in a revolver, so that was the way I was leaning also. I had been thinking about purchasing a 686 for myself, so I may have him take a look at it. It's a win win situation. He gets a new gun and big bro gets to shoot it. 8)

8) To me .38 target loads feel almost like a .22, which is practically no recoil. Once you're proficient with it the next step is to get some manly man ammo. ;)

Rest in peace Swoop.
I hope your best Christmas is being in the hands of the Father this year.

Halfway through reading it before I realized it was Shane.

And to all who have love ones that won't be coming home for Christmas, my heartfelt sympathies.
