Title: I have converted.
Post by: gunman42782 on July 04, 2007, 05:12:46 AM
My new AR has made a convert out of me.  The AR will run circles around the Mini 14.  I swapped barrels with a friend of mine, his bull barrel for my standard weight barrel.  Shot the heck out of it yesterday.  No matter the bullet weight, 50, 55, or 68 grains, it shot same POI.  The Mini is sighted in with 55s.  Shot the 68s a foot high and the 50s  6 inchs too low.  And by the 15th round it was too hot to hit anything at all.  I am a Ruger guy, but the Mini just does not stack up to the AR.  I ordered a folding stock for my Mini.  Give up on making it accurate, so I am gonna just turn it into a CQB rifle.  Anyway, here is a pic of my AR with bull barrel installed.

I don't own an AR. What is the benefit of a bull barrel?

Michael, Michael, Michael - we call them "High Tech Rifles" now, that or terrorist rifles. I'll forward you the memo on this change.      ;D

And since I invested heavily in the 308 culture until recently, I am playing catch up on the HTRs. One down, one Sig 556 on order (MB, still in line for one?), and maybe a third just for the heck of it. Since the plastic stock on my Mini-14 is black, does it count as one???

Don, Bull barrels are heavier barrels used for longer range, higher accuracy shooting. I just exhausted my knowledge of ARs! Damn, hate it when that happens.

 :D

Well gunman, welcome to the fold, what ever you don't like about an AR15, can be fixed. A mini however is a lot harder to correct. The AR15 platform has many advantages, everyone makes something for it, grips. sights, triggers or trigger kits, Barrels, sighting systems, free float barrel kits, adjustable stocks, flash hiders or muzzle brakes, even caliber upgrades. You've already played with some of the features with good results. Good luck with your projects.

Don, a single rifle does not a rifleman make, it must be able to deliver at 300 yrds, +.  the .357 magnum is a good cartidge, but won't deliver at this or greater distance.

True and therefore I shall not be known as a rifleman. My interests lie in personal self-defense at bad breath distance with a handgun.

My Savage 30-06 has black plastic furniture and will shoot 300 plus and I have a 30 Carbine with a laser.  Do either of thses qualify?  ;D

Hazcat, the Savage definitely, the carbine, not quite, although it is reasonably accurate at 300, the power factor is way down at that range. 110 grain pill at the muzzle 2,000 fps. Charts say at 300, down to 1068 fps, basically 9mm parabellum @ 50 yards, the charts don't even go to 400 yrds for this bullet.

M25,

Actually I'd never think of using the carbine past 100.  It's my 'house' gun and a fun shooter. Now my Savage with the accutrigger....that's a "reach out and knock 'em in the dirt" gun.  :D

I was talking to one of the guys at H-S Precision about building me a long-range rifle. The gunsmith finally said, "You know, Michael, I can build you a 1000-yard rifle, but that don't make you a 1000-yard rifleman..."

if Bob Munden can shoot a snub nose 357 at 200yds and hit a balloon some one should be able to shoot 300yds. with a carbine. And a lazer to boot man, THATS A BIG OL' AFFIRMITIVE, YOUR IN Hazcat !  ;D

But then again as Michael quoted
Quote

And as a matter of fact i know more than a couple people who would get out-shot at 100yd. off hand with that 1000 yard gun Vs. my 1911 or even Glock 35. Give me one of those S&W 460 w/scope and the right ammo and we can pace it out to 200+ yards easy.  8)

Tex " I'm your huckleberry, long range pistols, that's just my game.". Truthfully that's why shooting is the best sport, no matter how good you get, we can always back up and make the target smaller. Sometimes competition seems more like a job, than fun, If I want to win, then I must concentrate and perform to someone elses dissatisfaction. Don't get me wrong, I like to win, but I have more fun after the match, shooting plates at 100 yards, or showing another shooter it can be done, and letting her or him do it for the first time, after showing them the technique. Shooting rams at 500 meters with and sks, or ak47, is more satisfying than doing it with my m40, one is expected, the other is an eye opener. I'm trying to have more fun these days.

Does a new Bushmaster M4 count? Or a National Match M1-A with an E-2 stock, or an M1 Garand, or a couple of early model Mini's?

A couple of months ago I went out to narrow down my choices on an AR and I came home with an AK-47 ???. It was a third of the price with twice the punch. I am still planning on getting an AR someday. I love the platform and I have alot of experience with the AR's (I was an armorer in the ARMY and competed with the M-16 in the Army).
