What better way to "register" all firearms but to have the manufacturers be responsible for the database. Not only does that put the cost on them, but if they make a mistake, then the BATF can shut them down for violation of federal regulations!
Just read this section of the Brady proposals.
"Tracing of crime guns is often cumbersome and unsuccessful because ATF must make contact first with the manufacturer, then with the distributor and dealer to complete a trace." "ATF can streamline and significantly improve tracing by requiring dealers to report simple details about the sale of each gun to the manufacturer. This reporting requirement could also be applied to secondhand guns, which cannot now be traced because they have passed through unlicensed purchasers before being acquired and sold by the dealer."
So not only will the ATF have the NICs data, but just in case that becomes a sticky issue, they want to have the manufacturers maintain a database. AND combined with EVERY SALE TRANSFER has to go through a dealer, then in no time you have a national registry.
SO, here's the game. If they can't build gun registry out of NICS then they build it through the manufacturers. If they only get 50% of their proposals......we loose!
OH DID I MENTION: Brady doesn't think this requires a new law, but that ATF has the power to create a rule requiring this onerous record keeping!

" Tom says F#@K Brady"
BSing people is easier than actually DOING something, because really doing something would require us to get off our high horse and actually JAIL criminals, many of whom voted for our guy.
Oh, BTW, Didn't some one say something about "throwing off the yoke of tyranny"
We better start eating our Wheaties and seriously considering how important we consider the Constitution as opposed to safety, job, and comfort.

Congress coined that phrase long before you did, Tom

We had model citizen minorities here committing armed robbery while wearing Obama tee shirts And my county still voted Obama. ::)

I don't know if some of you grasped the sneakiness of this proposal!
The ATF is forbidden by law from maintaining a gun registry.
HOWEVER, they are trying to work around that, by having the manufacturer maintain the database for them!

Sadly Alf, the gun companies are already doing that. Every time you send your warranty card in, the companies add you to a database. The intention is not to have a 'registry', per se, but the result is the same. :(

I'd be careful about about being registered, because one day when Uncle Sam decides to repeal the 2nd, the registry will tell them who's door to kick in first.

Thats how it worked in England, Australia, and Ca.

"The fact is that the average man's love of liberty is nine-tenths imaginary, exactly like his love of sense, justice and truth. He is not actually happy when free; he is uncomfortable, a bit alarmed, and intolerably lonely. Liberty is not a thing for the great masses of men. It is the exclusive possession of a small and disreputable minority, like knowledge, courage and honor. It takes a special sort of man to understand and enjoy liberty - and he is usually an outlaw in democratic societies."
H.L. Mencken, February 12, 1923, Baltimore Evening Sun
Last line,...... ::)
BHO isn't even sworn in yet,....all these tactics, plans, concepts, proposals,...etc,... will peck away at the 2nd A, for the next 4 to (God help us) 8 years,... Let alone how many Supreme Court Appointments BHO makes, DC vs. Heller could be repealed, and other SCOTUS decisions could last decades.... >:(

I wish Brady would go to California.. and then the whole (blanking) state would fall off in the ocean! Then, most of our gun rights would be restored. Maybe Pelosi and Feinstein will be home in CA too when it happens. >:(
I'm tired of the views of Brady/ idiots in CA / and idiots in NY... dictating what happens to the rest of America..

AMEN!
Years ago, Sara Brady sat on the board at Sara Lee. She made sure that the Sara Lee Foundation gave the Brady Bunch a lot of money. I haven't eaten any of their cheesecake or bagels since. Same goes for Ben & Jerry's, although I did design and build a website for them a few years back. We should all put together a list of the idiot companies that support the Brady Bunch and their ilk and let them know why we're done with them.
Hawkfish, not all of us in California are that type of idiot. Just 7/12 of us. Probably about 95% of the Northern Californians. Unfortuanately, the continental plates are actually sliding under us, so we won't actually sink into the ocean. I'd leave and wave to the antis in that case. We'll just get the crap shaken out of us and when the infrastructure is broken down, we'll see who wishes they'd decided to get a gun. Think Katrina times 100,000. Maybe our fabulous Senators and Reps will be home in nice, big, brick building. :'(
