Title: What is a good handgun to hunt with?
Post by: wheels on January 18, 2009, 07:01:13 PM
I use a wheelchair and shooting with a rifle is very hard for me. But I can shoot a hand gun with no problem. I want to shoot some pigs, what is a good handgun to shoot with?

it depends on where you are.

a 357 6" gun is legal almost every where.  That would be the smallest I would use.

.44 mag with 300 grain hornaday xtp, is an excellent start,  my bias is toward a S&W model 29 or 629, but the Ruger Blackhawk and Super Blackhawk are very accurate single action firearms with that bullet weight and less expensive, the Ruger redhawk is a very fine pistol, but not to my taste in grip and sighting  system, although if you get one with the built in integral ring system can be be a very accurate and reliable pistol as well. The .45 long colt, with 300 grain bullets will do a great job as well, you just can't buy the ammo you want as easy.

.454 Casull, will definitely do the job, if you can afford the revolver, and you will not be disappointed, if you buy the Freedom arms model.

All excellent advice so far...talked for a bit with Bob Baker at Freedom Arms this AM...his revolvers (and the new single shot)!are heirloom guns. That said, a .44 Magnum Blackhawk is a superb hunting gun &often available used for a bargain price.

An Encore or Contender can also bring home the bacon if you don't mind being limited to a single shot. Depending on caliber these pistols have up to 200 fps higher velocity and more power than a similar sized revolver in the same caliber. A Contender weighs less than a revolver too.

Honestly, unless you are going after Hogzilla's big sister, you should be fine with any major caliber handgun. I know guys who shoot smaller hogs with BHP 9mm and such, while I myself would not be adverse to using a .45acp. Of course, your mileage may very.

A longslide 10mm would be nice for pigs.  8)

I'd base the decision on the guns you currently have, the guns you've shot before, and what ever else you might want to use your pig-gun on like deer or interlopers. Shot placement is also critical. If you're able to shoot the gun accurately, then you don't need as much raw horsepower.

Manufacturer-wise, S&W and Ruger are the best bets. If you want all the options, the S&W Proformance Center will make you what ever you want so long as the base-gun is an S&W and you've got the money.

If I were shooting pigs, I'd probably go for a bonded bullet for penetration and some sort of guarranteed expansion. I wouln't want an angry, wounded pig coming after me. Best to pick the biggest, strongest load you can place accurately and go find an apple to shove in the mouth.

A longslide 10mm would be nice for pigs.  8)

That's about ideal for most pigs and perps if you're interested in going semi-auto. Is there a long slide Glock 20? Or would the best choices be 1911s?

the thing you have to be careful of with autos is many states have min barrel lenghts and max ammo capcity.

The 10 mm is really the only auto chambering that is practical for hunting.   yes things like 9mm, 40 sw and even 45 acp will work just fine... so with a 22 short, does not mean they are the best choice for hunting.

I did not think about encore/contender, but that would be a very good choice.

As I was catching up on some reading this is what I was thinking.  As long as you are going hunting and handgun is what works best for you, why not go with a true hunting gun that will maximize your possibilities?

The .44 mag is the way I'd go. And you'll be able to use it on deer too.
But all the choices given will do the job. Shot placement is the key.

10mm is uncle Ted's pig gun with a laser.. ;D

My brother is in a wheelchair and has the same problem (regarding rifle fit.) The AR's and tube bolt guns are available with competition butt stocks that are adjustable in multiple dimensions and may be right for you. The Contenders and Encore handguns are very good in regards to you can use the same platform for a broad spectrum of hunting(small game to big as you dare to go.) My favorite handgun hunting cartridge, if you reload or have a friend who does, is the 357 Max(for deer).

m58. you were reading my mind! The TC systems offer unprecedented versatility and access to some serious long-range calibers. I wonder whether it would be possible to rig a rest off one of the arms of the wheelchair to steady a longer barreled Encore???

I like the T/C as well.   You can shoot most anything you desire from .357mag to 45/70.    Though somewhere in the middle, like 30/30, might be more practical.

And you also can choose barrel lengths from the old 10", the current 12",  to 14" and beyond.  Whatever you're comfortable in handling.

Is that "scared" or "scarred"? Never mind, both work.    8)

Might want to get your T/C products quick. While the makers of semi autos , utility riflfes and SD pistols are enjoying a boom, companies that deal with strictly "hunting" arms are not doing so well a 42% drop in sales and multiple lay offs at T/C made the difference for S&W between the profit that the R series promised and the loss their stock actually suffered.

It also depends on what type of pigs.  In Texas your encouraged to kill feral hogs with just about anything.  I'm sure your Parks and Wildlife will have more info.
