Title: Guns, like cars....
Post by: PoorSoulInJersey on January 20, 2009, 06:10:04 AM
I was driving down I-295 the other day, and this kind of occurred to me:
From a lot of standpoints, guns are a lot like motor vehicles.

Some people buy one and have no idea how to use it. When they take it out in public, they endanger themselves and those around them. The people who really know what they are doing (how to drive safely or carry responsibly) rarely get noticed unless there is an emergency situation.

Some people want a big one (like an SUV or a Desert Eagle .50 AE) because it makes them feel safer.

Some people dislike people with the really big ones (tractor trailers and Barrett .50 BMGs) because they aren't comfortable around something so incredibly powerful.

Some people love and collect them, no matter how expensive they might be.

Banning "assault weapons" to prevent violent crime is about like banning vans to prevent kidnapping.

Even as consumable prices rise (gas and ammo), people still find a way.

Some people use them for necessity (getting to work or fighting your nation's enemies), others use them for fun (joyriding or going to the range).

It's no more logical to say "you don't need a gun, we'll protect you" than it is to say "you don't need a car, we'll get you to work."

Some people want one far above and beyond the basics (like a Ferrari or a full-auto MP-5). If they have the money, they should be allowed to get one (an if they can't afford to own one, at least be able to rent one for a reasonable fee).

You have to care for and maintain them if you want them to deliver when it counts.

If you're going to license something, have it make sense. Just because you passed a driving test when you're 16 doesn't mean you still know the motor vehicle laws in your state at age 70. If you're going to license someone to carry a gun, maybe one of the questions on the form should be "when are you allowed to you allowed to use deadly force in public?" not "name three of your friends who will lie for you anyway so we can ask them stupid questions about you."

When you want more than the average person owns or something nicer, people always say "you don't need that."

I think I've crossed into rambling mode, but feel free to shoot holes in my logic if I've seriously erred.
