I saw today on the outdoor wire, (or one of the wires) that Smith & Wesson now offers all of the auto M&P's with an optional thumb safety. Does anyone know if the original M&P autos are capable of being retro-fitted with this new safety? I have a M&P9c and I like it but I would really like to have the safety on it. I know a lot of people don't feel it is necessary but I kind of like one, having gotten used to one on my other guns.

Contact S&W, send them your s/n so they know exactly when it was built. They should be able to answer the question for you.

Actually I did. I just haven't heard back yet and being the impatient person that I am, I was hoping that someone here knew more I could find anywhere else. ;)

Even if you can't I'm sure you can always sell your gun to a "smart" person that says they are professional enough to not need a safety... ::)
I've been waiting for smith to do this... I maybe buying a M&P soon.

Yea, I may be buying another one soon. I do like mine, I just really want that safety. I debated for quite awhile on this style and now 1 month later, what I really wanted is available. Oh well. More guns means more fun!

I own a full size M+P .40 without a thumb safety, according to the M+P forum, it can be retrofitted. However, if you are impatient, sending it home to the mothership may take some time. If you can do it yourself or have a local gunsmith do it, all the better.
They have been around for the "G" guns for some time.

Got this from the S&W Performance site, If they can turn it around quick, I'd let S&W do it.

This according to an email I received this morning from Smith & Wesson:
Unfortunately retrofitting the M&P is not possible at this time.

Hello,
I recently purchased a new M&P9c. I do like the pistol but this is my first striker fired pistol of my own. I see that you have introduced versions of your M&P's that have optional thumb safeties. Is this something that I could have retro-fitted to my compact 9mm M&P? While I like the gun, I would really like to have the safety on my gun.
Thank you for your help.
Sincerely,
Craig

Just sell the non-safety M&P and then buy one with a safety if that is what you are looking for...... you should come close to breaking even.
