A local lawmaker says a recent Supreme Court decision re enforces the need for a "conceal and carry" law in the state of Illinois.
But others say getting the bill passed, could be a long shot.

Bill Supporter, State Representative Bill Mitchell spoke in Pekin today about creating the Family and Personal Protection Act.
The act would require an applicant wishing to carry concealed firearms to complete a training course in handgun use, safety, and marksmanship.

Representative Bill Mitchell said, "Just a few months ago in the United States Supreme Court in D.C vs. Heller says the second amendment means what we thought it meant, the right to bear arms rather that what some folks said state militias, so that I believe sheds new light in terms of this legislation."

State Representative Bill Brady of Bloomington says he supports the bill,
But he says he's noticed much opposition to similar bills causing them to fail in the Illinois House.
Representatives say the majority of House Leaders opposing the bill represent the Chicago land area.

Sorry to hear that Cookie. Hope things work out.
OK folks, lets get them E mails going to the Il. Legislature pointing out that CCW has at best decreased crime and at worst not increased it everywhere else.

Can one of you Il. residents post links to your State senators and Reps. ?

Tough news Cookie, but as you say, at least you got a severance package of some sort. You live in Illinois? If so, whereabouts?

While they're at it, maybe they should get rid of that abominable FOID card too. I still have mine, think I will use it as a target someday.

  E mail I sent:

Please support the Constitutional rights of ALL Americans by supporting the proposed Concealed Carry law.
Concealed Carry DOES NOT, as the Brady group claims, increase violent crime. In the 40+ states that have adopted concealed carry laws the worst result has been no effect on crime, most states have documented a decrease in violent crimes.
Please allow your citizens a chance against the violent predators that plague your streets. The criminals are already carrying as they don't respect any of your laws.
For more information please refer to www.gunfacts.info
The linked website has no connection with the NRA or any other gun rights group, it is simply a collection of impartial information.
Thank you.

In going through the list of proposed bills in Illinois I found 4 proposals for concealed carry. Their are actually more pro proposals than anti.
I couldn't hardly believe it.

There was just a report on our local TV news that CCW applications are up 80% over last year.

Hope the CCW movement swings in a positive direction in your neck of the woods cookie.

And hang tough in the search for new opportunities also. I hope all the doors open wide for you.

Thank PegLeg,
I just ran across this from the Illinois Sheriffs' Association, even though they say they didn't take a stand in the past they never supported it either.

90% of the states sheriffs support it, wanna bet the other 10% are friends of Daily?

It's a step in a better direction....but still looks like it would have a lot of red tape involved...of course, it is Illinois...  ;)

Quote from text at the above link by cookie:

Whereas, the general provisions of a conceal carry act in Illinois should include the following:

1. Permits should be issued by a state agency to insure consistency in evaluation and screening.

2. Individuals who receive a concealed carry permit should receive adequate training including basic knowledge of firearms, the proper handling of a firearm, live fire exercises for range qualification, instruction and testing on use of force as a citizen including the liability of that use.

3. Applications should be processed by the Sheriff’s office including the ability of the Sheriff to articulate specific reasons why the permit should be denied and those objections should be considered by the state before issuing a permit.

4. For the purpose of officer safety, a concealed carry permit should be an identifiable code, background or other means to show that an individual has been issued a permit to carry a concealed firearm on the person’s driver’s license, FOID card and state identification.

A little update:

2 CCW bills made it out of committee yesterday, one has the Sheriff as the one to approve the permits. The other has the State police in charge of the program. If we can at least get our foot in the door, then we can amend it to make it better. I contacted my Rep. and he is on board.
