I'm not sure if some of the comments on this page make any suggestion as to how people all over the nation really feel about politics these day (i.e. "I'd rather have a Harvard educated lawyer in office than a "cow - calf" rancher.") Sorry I have tipped a few back with some buddies tonight, and Ken is my cousin so I am a little bias on the subject, but just read through Ken's speach and then read some of the comments that are made and I think you will get my point. Also please do remember that our family has a strong, "stand by your word and make your own way through life," upbringing. The URL is below and all comments would be greatly appreciated

South Dakota should just give Sioux Falls to Iowa and forget it. Cityslickers. >:(

Well, the Socialists are trashing him already for being "a farmer" I didn't understand the significance of which side of "the river" he comes from, but took it as a "wrong side of the tracks" analogy. No one brought up the fact that in bad economic times, when the "family farm" is a dying breed in America, he is in a secure enough position to consider running. This shows that he must be a fairly shrewd "farmer", AND business man.
When the campaign gets going media access will be his biggest problem I think, the socialists will continue to trash him and the GOB's will try to ignore him. If a comment is made by his opponents about which side of the river he lives on I think he should answer to the effect that with Black men in the white house and running the Republican Party that type of "wrong side of the tracks" mentality has no place in American politics.
While I'm not familiar with SD's specific situation, a conservative successful non GOB has to be better than socialists or party hacks.
Good luck to him.

Living both East and West river growing up, the East is more settled- West river is pretty desolate with the exception of Rapid City. It's a cityslicker/hick deal.

Oh. That was the root of the separation of Virginia and West Virginia. The actual fracture occurred at the beginning of the Civil war over Secession, but it had been building since before the Whiskey rebellion during Washington's term.

yeah pretty much, east river is more farm ground and mostly liberal city people. While west river is ranching communities and conservatives. So in other words almost all of the smart people live west of the Missouri River.

The river, BTW, is the Missouri.
And the situation is very similar here in ND - east of the river seems to be populated with all sorts of liberal Minneapolis wanna-bees especially here in the Fargo area. Even Bismarck - which is actually on the river, has those pretentious kinds of "big city folk" too. West of the river where I had my ranches is very rural ag land and oil fields - and the most gorgeous country in the state.
Tom, I was a little surprised. You have been so good reminding us that it is up to US lately. ;) I would suggest it is up to US - not just the candidate - to remind everyone that the "wrong side of the tracks" mindset is wrong - start now and keep it up. But a very good point nonetheless.

Who would understand the economy better, a politician, a Lie-yer or someone own owns their own business?
NOT being a lawyer should be one of the qualifications for running for office.

;D you got me on that one. But I was commenting as an outsider looking in. Just adding (hopefully ) helpful comments, part of the problem here is that we have to many Massholes coming up for the summer demanding crap the rest of us have to deal with year round.
