Last night on the local Austin TX news, they showed a bunch of senior citizens demonstrating at the Capitol about a bill to require a photo ID when voting. The good citizens were all upset because it would “disenfranchise” them. A spokesman for the group said many senior citizens don’t have a driver’s license and it would be too much of a hardship for them to get an approved ID card.
Well, excuse the heck out of me. How hard is it to get an ID? My guess is it’s a lot easier than spending a day protesting at the Capitol. The Lt Gov came on and said the State would help anyone get an ID and even pay for it.
The only reason I can see for anyone, and I mean anyone, opposing a Voter ID law, is that they intend to vote fraudulently or allow others to vote fraudulently. I am a senior citizen myself, but a Voter ID law is a damn good idea whose time has come.
With BO and the dems in change, I would not count on Congress considering a similar bill. And if Texas passes it, I’m sure the ACLU would take it to the Supreme Court to be overturned. After all, the dems might lose elections if folks could only vote once. It has been said that LBJ first got elected when dead people apparently rose from the grave and voted in alphabetical order just as the polls closed.
The dem’s motto: “Voter early, vote often.”

Bullseye! Instead of loading up the senior bus and going over there to protest, how bout going to the DMV instead to get a photo ID. I bet if they called ahead and told them they had a bus full of seniors coming, they probably would not be made to stand in line either.

How do they cash their SS checks with out ID ?

I'm sure the DPS showed up in full riot gear to hold back the tide of unruly old folks. The only thing worse than the regular hippies here in Austin is the old hippies, I'm sure its a guilt trip when you got to tase or throw the OC at them. The DMV could have showed up with ginger ale, crackers, and and some cameras, taken their pictures, print out their state IDs, and shuttle them back to the home in a couple hours.

Don't worry too much about a bunch of seniors protesting. With the new Federal control of heath care, they'll soon be denied the treatments they need to get around, and they'll just stay home and die. ???

We've been debating this one for years in MA. Same story, they say it disenfranchises the elderly and the poor (illegals)...
So, if you know a street address and no one has used it yet at the polls, just walk right up, state a name and address and vote!
This year because of the primaries held for both parties, we could vote in either primary regardless of your political affiliation. So, exactly what they thought would happen, happened.
Democrats voted for McCain in the GOP primary because they figured he could be beaten by either the Skank or the Stutterer..and the rest is history...

Minnesota defeated a similar bill today, and the biggest thing was the seniors thing. Forget the idea that we have a major issue with a recount that is just full to the brim (and overflowing) with abuse and fraud. Heaven forbid we would try and get something correct. I still point out that both of our children, that are now residents of other States, received cards reminding them to vote by absentee ballot. Neither one even has a Minnesota drivers license, and the system that is heavily reliant on DL's has screwed up their voter lists.

tell them you are going to protest and get everyone on the bus, then give them a free ID and drop them off at Chuck Wagon Buffett. they would love you! Political Gold.

For all the reasons stated before like voter fraud, vote and often and such, that is why we need Big Brother, the Civilian Defense Force, our govt. to dictate medical, to make sure we are not disenfranchised and all our needs are taken care of. Like I told some friends and relatives, I guess it is time to welcome in the United Socialist States of America.

If California ever passes a bill like this, I will gladly take seniors to get I.D. myself. I don't have a lot of money, but I'd even pay for a few of them.
