Title: Pocket Gun Safety
Post by: brianp on February 18, 2009, 10:59:36 PM: I'd appreciate comments on pocket gun safety in that most of the compact (or mouseguns) have no safety except that they are double-action only (DAO) with a long trigger pull. I worry that if I carry a round in the chamber I'll pull the trigger prematurely in a stressful situation. On the other hand, it doesn't take watching very many episodes of "The Best Defense" to realize that there are some situations where there just isn't time to work the slide. Thoughts anyone? Thanks.

I've heard it said that if you can't get to it and get your 1st aimed shot off in 2 seconds, you might as well not have it.

Post by: CDR on February 19, 2009, 12:45:49 AM: I'd highly recommend a S&W Airweight Centennial (hammer enclosed) J frame revolver with .38 spl+P rounds in a Robert Mika pocket holster. Just about the perfect pocket setup IMHO.

I carry both a J frame as well as a Walther PPK inside a Mika model specific pocket holster and really am extremely pleased with these holsters. Post by: Michael Bane on February 20, 2009, 02:17:58 PM: +1 on a pocket holster (and Mika makes an excellent one). I also prefer either a hammerless revolver or a semiauto because of the snag factor. I currently use the Ruger LCP .380 in a Desantis Nemesis, another cheap, good pocket holster.

There is usually a specific draw for the type pocket holster you choose...a sort of a "bump" with the middle finger of the strong hand against the holster to free the gun so you don't pull out the holster as well as the gun. Even holsters that have a "sticky" outside (like roughed out leather) will sometimes surprise you, so it's a good idea to always bump the holster.

Good rule of thumb is (to quote tombogan) keep your booger hook off the bang switch until you're ready to fire.

All of my pocket holsters are now kydex. One for a snubby, a G26 and the Kel-Tec P3AT arrived today. I have my pocket holsters built to be "drop free" as in no retention. Just reach in, get a grip and remove. The kydex also aids in one-handed holstering. No bumping required! :-)

It was very inexpensive (notice I did not say cheap ;) ) but works as well as more expensive models. The exterior material really grabs to the inside of the pocket and stays put while I draw the revolver.

Post by: devzal on March 01, 2009, 03:26:11 PM: I made this holster for my Keltec out of scrap leater and a bit of plastic last year at the devzal compound arts and crafts day. It works good for me, its wide enough to keep the grip up and keeps change out of trigger.

You forgot the BIGGEST one ;D

Keep your boogerhook off the trigger till you WANT it to go bang
Otherwise you'll blow your nuts off with a revolver just as quick as a semi auto.
