Lucky for me the DVR saved an episode of the Best Defense last night since I was in a meeting. Watched it today and loved the discussion on the scenario of a convenience store robbery. The part of being the witness was highly stressed but one thing that came to mind was the use of cell phone to notify authorities if not confronted by the perp. I do not believe I would have thought of that being in that particular situation cause I would have been reaching for a handgun instead of a cell phone in case things turned really bad. This was a perfect scenario that could happen to anyone. Great job.

The moving to adjust the lanes of fire as well as getting off of the "X" was great emphasis in that show last night!
-
Thanks for the feedback guys... I actually thought think that the episode that aired last night was one of the strongest of the season!

I of course, missed it! >:(

That was the first I had seen and I thought it was great and my wife ended up watching with me and it was a great one from a discussion standpoint of the difference in being aware in the situation and we talked about how in scenario one why you don't want your hands up or once you are to that position (hands visible) you are basically surrendered and it isn't the right time to change your mind.
Have it dialed up on the DVR now for regular recording.

In the second scenario, the guy with the CCW turned his back to draw. I don't know if I would have taken my eye's off the BG. Was this a move done for the situation and for what reason?

He didn't really "turn his back" to draw. The idea was to "prep" the draw discreetly by blading to the threat and getting a preliminary grip. The demo of this was faster than it should have been. It should be a slow, subtle movement that won't attract attention. The demonstrator is a uniformed law enforcement officer and a good shooter, but the concept was new to him.
Sneaky draws--with all weapons--are a great skill set and lots of fun to practice. Everyone likes the high-speed draw, but a dicsreet "sooner" is often better than an overt "faster."
Stay safe,
Mike

Thanks, Mike.
Thought there would be a good reason. I'll work on the "sneaky draws".
-
I noticed the demonstrator pulled his weapon, reholstered, and then drew again. Did I see something different then what he did? Blading to the threat was smart. Narrowed his profile, plus kept his away hand out of view.

I just watched the sequence again on the DVR.... What you are actually seeing is him adjusting the jacket. He didn't "draw and reholster" as I saw it, he "gripped, realized he had the jacket tangled up, released and re-gripped".
Take another look if you get the chance on DVR, in re-runs or on DVD (if we get that worked out in the future).

Thanks for the clarification, that is why I asked! Suspected I was seeing something wrong.

Last nights episode (#8) was very empowering in thought!! Kudos & congrats on a great showing!! Sometimes avoidance and observation are key to a critical / threatening situation!!

Excellent episode. The discussion of what to do after the incident is highly valuable.
More focus should be made to that line of thought.
But in recent news this is relevant: 1 dead, one injured in Miami Burger King shooting (Armed customer kills robber!!!)
Miami Herald ^ | 3/24/09 | BY ROBERT SAMUELS AND JENNIFER LEBOVICH
One man was killed and another seriously wounded in a shootout inside a Miami Burger King on Tuesday, officials said.
Police said a man wearing a ski mask walked into the store at Biscayne Boulevard and 54th Street and demanded money from a clerk.
A customer, who has a concealed weapons permit, pulled a gun, said Officer Jeff Giordano, a Miami police spokesman.
The customer and robber exchanged fire.
The robber was shot dead at the scene.
The customer, who had several gunshot wounds, was taken to Ryder Trauma Center in serious but stable condition, said Lt. Ignatius Carroll, a Miami Fire Rescue spokesman.
At about 4 p.m., officials got several 911 calls reporting people shot inside the Burger King.
Lets learn from other how to be safe and provide our and those we love the best defense.

I wanted to bring this scenario back up.
On the 13th of this month my work place was for the robbed 1st time, and one of the two BG was displayed a handgun.
Luckily they only wanted some cash and were in and out in under 2min without harming anyone.
I was in the back and witnessed one BG jumping back over the counter and the pair running out.
I was able to get a good look at the getaway car, and it made all the difference as the local PD put out its APB.
One BG was arrested at the car with the cash within 30min and the other found a few days later.
In this situation, a firearm would have not made a difference. Instead I was a good witness and the BG still got put away!
Most important there was no physical harm done.
-Mental may be a different story for the counter girl.-

Dear Steyr:
I am very glad to hear that nobody was harmed in the incident. Based on your account of the events, you did EXACTLY the right thing. I'm confident that your efforts to focus and remember key details of the robbers' and vehicle descriptions made all the difference. Whether that was inspired by the TBD episode or just a product of your own personal training and commitment is immaterial; it was the best thing to do and you did it well.
Congratulations on a job well done!
Stay safe,
Mike

Seemed a little biased the way it was presented. In the scenario where the good guy got shot, the BG never really took his eyes off the GG. The GG drew and the BG shot him. In the recreation showing a "better" way to do it, the BG took his eyes off the GG to yell at the lady trying to use her cell phone, the GG drew and repositioned and shot the BG. What would the GG have done if the BG never took his eyes off, as in the 1st scenario? I think he may have needed to have done nothing as he couldn't have drawn without drawing attention and risking being shot.

Yes, Azs, that was exactly the point.

hey,a newbie here,i too missed the part of the episode where if it was safe to shoot, then shoot(i dozed off during the commercial before that part came on),i gather by the responses that ,if it is safe to shoot the robber, then do so if you feel harm or danger to you or others.my father was a retired highway patrol, but passwd away in 1993,so my my question is poised to rob or micheal.enjoy the show,thanks.................................

mydogtaz,
Yeah, local legal considerations aside (know your area....), part of the lesson in that show was knowing when you NEED To or CAN go to your firearm to reduce the risk to you or others. If you go to gun before you "need" to or in a situation where you escalate the actions of the bad guy, you aren't helping anyone.
Thanks for watching.
