Well, unfortunately your question is quite vague. What does he plan on doing with it? How experienced is he as a shooter? I'm sure there are dozens of more specific questions that could be asked to really narrow down his choice. For a first gun, a good rule of thumb is to start with something relatively basic but that has room for future upgrades (such as an A3 upper for adding optics after the shooter has become comfortable using the iron sights). But again, the specific mission of the gun will really dictate what how your friend should spend his money.
And as for which brand is best, let the posts begin......... (I like my Bushmaster ;D)

No preference but I've never heard anything bad about Rock River Arms except that they are in the higher end of the price range, same with Stag Arms.

+1
I am a DPMS fan myself.

hppfully he dosent get to read this but experience wise none or little target & hunting hes looking at the .223 .& hes talking about putting an evotech or something like that red dot sope .as far as quality & durability which ones are the better ones .
-
also one more question isnt the.223 & the 5.56 the same round ? you could use either one right ?

223 works in 5.56 chambers but not the other way around. Minor differences between 5.56 NATO case dimensions and .223 SAAMI case dimensions cause excessive pressure if 5.56 is used in .223 Chambers.
there are exceptions but the rule of thumb if if it says .223 use .223, but if it's marked for 5.56mm then use either.

thank you !

I'm partial to DPMS also.

DTI (Del-ton Inc) isn't bad either. And its a little easier on the pocket book than some of the others too.

Here we go again . . . and this time a 2-fer! ;D
ARs - any of the well-known brands are excellent. In all the time this site has been operational I have not heard one statement here along the lines of "Do not buy this AR because...." You will hear those statements on other sites which leads to the confusion. Trust the folks here, they have proven their worth and knowledge without the strident emotions evident elsewhere. So, DPMS, Colt, Stag, RRA, Bushmaster, etc. are excellent. Spikes Tactical also is alleged to do a good one, although I do not know anyone who owns one - other than MB. Remington has their new R-15 too (Remington is owned by the same company that also owns Bushmaster).
223 vs 5.56 - buy a rifle marked for 5.56 and you can shoot 223, but not the other way around. Has to do with different SAAMI pressures and case lengths.
Welcome aboard to the site.

Remington has their new R-15 too (Remington is owned by the same company that also owns Bushmaster).
Also the same company that owns DPMS now. Remington's AR's are actually being built by Bushmaster and DPMS (one builds the 15's and the other the 10's, but I can't remember which is which without the article ... which I can't find right now).
-
If I were to buy an AR right now it would be Stag.
They are right at $1,000 and IMO give you the most gun for the money (notice how I steered clear of "Bang for the buck")
They have been making components for other manufacturers for years and finally started making the entire AR package.
From what I have read, they are accurate and reliable....... and at their price point..... I would pull the trigger (oh, I just couldnt resist that one).

thank you !

The following thread, "What Parts Break in a Carbine Course?" was invaluable in helping me make my decision. Pat Rogers, a renowned Carbine instructor, former Marine and retired NYPD Sergeant is the primary contributor and, taking the time to read his posts, you will be amazed at his knowledge. This thread is now 38 pages long but if you focus solely on Mr. Rogers posts, you will learn all you need to know to make an informed decision on which AR 15 is for you. For me, after months of research, it was a Colt M4.

Also, there is an article written by Pat Rogers entitled "Keep Your Carbine Running" that addresses cleaning a carbine. It is an excellent read and lays to rest many falsehoods on what really is and isn't necessary when cleaning an AR 15.

This will be time well invested.
Good luck.

I have a DPMS and it shoots better than I can. Most makes are reliable and function well.

Bushmaster is reasonable and alowes more money to be spent on ammo for a new shooter.
-
JP Enterprises is what I have.
-
Bushmaster got to love the snake.
-
DPMS, only AR I've seen that the upper and lower fit tight enough as to not rattle, wiggle, allow any movement at all between the two. NICE machining throughout.

Let not your heart be troubled.................the simple solution to rattling uppers and lowers in an AR 15......the "Accu-Wedge". It works like a charm to end rattling and also improves your shooting accuracy.

I havefinally decided to bite the bullet (groans, hurling of rocks etc.) and get a tactical carbine. I once owned, and liked, an olympic h-bar. They are now owned by Remington/Bushmaster. I am torn between the bushmaster A-3 m4 and bushmaster predator. I am not commited to an AR-15 platform, but any input would be appreciated. If it helps, I do not have the money to build the rifle I want now. I just want the basic chassis and the high cap (easily available mags), that I can build on later as finances permit.

If you want something AR like, uses AR mags, you can go XCR, never used. Sig 556, I thought was OK. Or gas piston AR, from LWRC or POF, which I hope to get befor to soon. But I'm sure gas piston AR 15 is a whole thread on its own. And XCR is gas piston.

I have carried Colts and loved them. Personally owned a Bushmaster and thoroughly enjoyed it. My DPMS has been my favorite and would love to get one in .308.
-
I am quite happy with both of my DPMS's never had a lick of trouble never so much as a hickup
-
I've been very happy with my flat top Bushmaster. Which ever brand you decide on, I would highly suggest getting one with a flat top (if you like the carry handle you can still add one to it). It makes mounting optics a lot easier.
