From www.thetacticalwire.com
Smith & Wesson has identified a condition that may exist in certain PPK and PPK/S pistols which may permit a round to be discharged without the trigger being pulled. When the manual safety is disengaged, Smith & Wesson's Product Engineering Group has determined that the possibility exists in certain firearms that lowering the hammer may cause a chambered round to fire.
This recall applies to all Walther PPK and PPK/S pistols manufactured by Smith & Wesson from March 21, 2002, until February 3, 2009. For serial numbers and more info, click here.

Say it isn't so!!!Oh...it's just the PPK.

I needed to ship mine in for repair anyway. I just haven't gotten around to it.

NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOO! >:(
I'll wait for the official S&W announcement.
FWIW, purchased mine Spring 08, the range 2002 to 2009 seems awfully broad. The only issues I've ever had were the rear sights were off center, flipping the decocker was like bone on bone, very stiff and didn't loosen up until some range time and literally flipping decocker on/off, on/off/ on/off etc,...150 times... shoot, clean, lube, flip on/off, repeat,...
If there is an issue with the manual safety/ decocker, that is where I could see it.
The pistol has always seemed very "tight" as to tolerances, but have had no other "issues".

FEBRUARY 20, 2009

Gee, Thanks.. :'( :'( :'(
Just came home from work, and you guys are on it.
I appreciate it, maybe I'll be proactive and contact them. Maybe I'll get a spiffy hat! :P
I'd rather have an extra mag, those little buggers are not cheap....
-
Just a follow up: online form confirmed the news.
0000BAJ - 9999BAJ , is my "zone" .
Got a confirmation number and pre paid UPS label and instructions coming.
No where did it say spiffy hat, no mag, no nothing. Just STOP shooting it. :-\
For the price of this little guy, you figure a coupon maybe? I'm one of S&W's best customers,... ???
So it begins,.....
Thanks for the heads up again, since I moved it may have taken a lot longer to get notified through "proper" channels.

In an email I got it says, "This recall includes all PPK and PPK/S pistols manufactured by Smith & Wesson."
-
S&W just recalled a rifle too. I'm almost afraid to but a gun from anyone.

Oh well.....mines only a month old. Maybe they will smooth out the safety.
At least I'm not afraid it will come back with 10lb plus trigger pull like an unmentioned poly pistol I have.

You still have that thing?

He can't get anyone to trade him an M&P for it ;D

We almost purchased a new one made by S&W but held off as we'd read of issues with feeding problems with a lot of them.
Lucky for us we found one a month or so ago at a gun show. Veryl lightly used and well taken care of and maufactured by Interarms.
S&W seems to have botched this gun.

S&W seems to have botched this gun.
This was discussed ad nauseam on another forum specific to this op. S&W acquired this line from Interarms, and of course put their .02 cents into design. The Walther "bite" is gone as they have extended the tang, and between the former and the latter designs, S&W did not make the PPK/S as "loose" as the Interarms.
I have several boxes of .380 ammo of every make and type through mine and never had a feed issue. It did "loosen" up after a couple of boxes, but the decocker/safety was stiff for much longer.
I don't think S&W "botched" this gun, I think like other pistols "that shall not be named", One of the top manufacturers of firearms just had one piece of the package give them a hard time.
My Kel-Tec P3AT goes with me most everywhere, and feeds fine with a variety of ammo as well. Some will say the Kel-tec is "quirky", some will say otherwise.
So it goes,... at least some got an free mag and a hat....

Won't they tell me my gun could be unsafe? This is the first I've heard of it. Glad I found this place!!!

Hello red364, I own several S&W's and in all the excitement, found out about the recall for the PPK/S, here at DRTV as well. If this recall pertains to you, go to the S&W website, click on the recall banner, and verify your serial # range. The broad range of production years covers most of the PPK/S produced by S&W. Fill out the quick form, and a mailer and instructions will arrive,... :-[
Yes it sucks, These "little" pistols aren't cheap. Although I have had no issues with mine (purchased Spring 08), if it has a bug, I want it right.
Welcome to the DRTV forum.

This is a follow up. After receiving my email and print label instructions, (which didn't work), I sent an email to CS at S&W.
Got a response to rensend info.
OK, mail from S&W has instructions and shipping label UPS 2nd day air.
OK, go to local UPS store, NOT allowed to ship, has to be done from UPS Terminals.
OK, Terminals closed on Saturday. (Great.)
OK, Instructions say you can call UPS for a pick up, UPS employee says drivers won;t pick up firearms. (Really Great)...
OK, So here I am with a $500 paperweight I can't get back to the mothership unless I take time off work to get to the UPS terminal.
All this for a "potential" issue with the hammer block and decocker.
Plus the unmarked fiberboard box I had to buy.
Not even going to get a spare mag or hat. :-\
-
I'll send ya a hat Tom....
It will say ABCO Welding Supply....much more tactical. Just got to wash it and find a box.....think my Tactical Yorkie may have taken a few bites out of the bill tho.......
;D
-
Luckily I'm only a few miles from UPS, not a "UPS Store". I sent my PPK back 3 weeks ago. Still no word about when I'll be getting it back.
-
I talke to them yesterday. They received my gun on April 2nd. As of yesterday I'm still looking at a 6 to 8 week wait.
Boy, I'm so glad I sent my gun in!!
I guess patience is a good thing.... ::)
-
My PPK/S got to the mothership 2 1/2 weeks ago, no word on when she'll come back with a dimple behind the hammer.
Like I posted before, these pistols "ain't" the cheapest out there, and to have a recall going back to 2002? 7 Years?
Plus no hat, shirt, mag, "loaner" ;),, I thought after another pistol (that shall not be named) was giving mags and hats away for the inconvenience of their major recall, S&W could have at least given a rebate, voucher, gift card, SOMETHING!
I own several S&W's, M+P .40, (love it), a Gold Match "tweaked" 1911 (love it also,...) an old Model 19 (which will still out live me)...
and is the "bump in the night pistol"...
and the Walther/S&W. Which it seems, I just need to shut up and be patient. :-X
Sorry rant off.....

Even with .380 ammo kinda scarce, I am going to "burn" through a box when I get her back. Hard and fast.
It never had a problem before, and now I have to trust it again...
