Title: Long range sniper rifle
Post by: Thanos on February 24, 2009, 09:51:04 PM
Okay, I have a 1911 and a AR15 variant. But now I am wanting something for longer distances and more hitting power. I was thinking of a AR10 variant or a 700. but I am not sure what I really want. Since I am newer to guns, I want to get the best I can for the money, but still want to get the best deal. Basically I am wanting to have guns that fulfill the whole range from 1 to 1000 yards but still have the most versitility. Do you think a carbine would be a good idea too?

I currently have:
Kimber 1911
JP15 with and 18inch barrel

What are your recommendations?
I am not looking to buy it tomorrow, but I want to have a good idea of what I should consider.

Rem 700 is also the basis of the Marine Corps M 40 sniper rifle. If you want more rounds look at an AR 10 varmint version or the FN-AR

Savage Arms puts out some really accurate bolt action rifles at decent prices.

This is one with their AccuTrigger.

I prefer 30-06 myself but they offer rifles in an abundance of calibers in their various rifles.

How about a .338 Lapua?

First I think you decide what class of cartridge you want, whether it's mid-powered (e.g. .308), magnum class (.e.g. 7mmMagnum) or super magnum (e.g. .416Barrett).  Then decide on the type/style of rifle you want.  And go seek that particular combination.  Most any caliber can be had in any style, it's only a matter of what you're willing to pay.

All things considered, or at least some things, I decided, for anything greater than the .223, to stick with .308 case based rounds.  .243, .260, 7mm-08, .308 and .338-08.  A wide range of the mid-powered cartridges.   The reason being the easy availability of the .308 brass for reloading.  (Yes, I could have as easily chosen the .30-06; just wanted the shorter actions.)   IF factory ammo availability is your ONLY consideration, then my observation is .30-06 and .270Win is the most common round on the shelves, after .223.

My recommendation in your situation is to go for the .308.  It would be a good addition to your stable.  You can go for an AR-10, but I'd recommend you get a solid, heavy barrel bolt action.   Something along the heaver barreled Savage, Tikka or Remington line and top it with a quality scope.

Thanos the best long range military rifle out there is pretty much Accuracy International's bolt gun. Very pricey but you know it was built from the ground up for what it does.
