Title: My 'NEW' Sig P220
Post by: Texas_Bryan on February 25, 2009, 05:25:08 PM
I got my new Sig P220, at least its new to me, from my uncle yesterday.  The pistol's around 15-20 years old, and It was my father's service pistol when he was a trooper that patrolled the highways.  When the department switched to the P226 ten years ago he purchased his P220.  After a couple months my old man sold it to my uncle, mom's brother, who's another LEO.  Unfortunently, in ten years, my uncle has never fire the weapon.  Recently though after I told my uncle I was looking to buy a new full size pistol and asked for a recommendation, he told me he'd sell me the 220 for what he payed my dad, ten years ago.  I said hell yeah.

So now I got a Sig P220 .45 ACP, with three mags.  Some finish wear on the slide, from holsters, is the only wear on the gun.  But I'm excited that I've got the pistol my old man trusted to protect his life, so many years ago while on patrol, and now I can trust my safety to it.

I'll do a range report in a couple weeks.  And if anyone can suggest a way to refinish the slide let me know.

Good for you!  You won't be disappointed.

As far as the blueing, any competent gunsmith should be able to help you out but why bother?  Keep her oiled and clean and keep the character of the gun "as is"...

Thanks, honestly I'm getting kind of of nostalgic about the holster wear.  And by the way the price would make even the cheapest of ya'll jealous. ;D

And your 220 compact may be ugly, but I bet you don't give a second thought to it's reliability.

Don't refinish it. That's your dad's holster wear.

It doesn't have to be a "show" piece. Its a family pistol. My .02 cents? Enjoy it. Grab some factory ammo, and run that thing!

Clean, lube, shoot, repeat... It's a great Sig. Bet it works everytime,...

Congrats.

Over at Sig Forum they have a bunch of guys that do refinishing work but it is kind of spendy as you have to refinish the whole slide. The coating Sig uses goes well beyond the surface of the metal. Honestly you shouldn't have a problem with rust as long as you maintain it even minimally. I have never understood the aversion to a little honest holster wear as long as it doesn't compromise the rust resistance, which this shouldn't.

I agree...I have a 1903 Savage that could use a blueing job but by keeping it well lubed and cased (I don't shoot it any more), it's doing quite well for 106 years of age...The stock and forearm are still beautiful for a gun that cost about 8 bucks in 1903!

If it's only holster wear refinishing is a waste of time and money. If you carry it it will still be in a holster, wearing on the same places so any possible rust on those areas will get worn of just like the finish did.

Yep, then it'll stay worn. :)  After looking at it I've grown fond of the character it gives.

I have two-cents here, so I may as well throw them in.

First...congrats on your Sig.  I really like Sig pistols, especially the 220.

Second...why the heck would you want to refinish it?  Holster wear is like...character marks.  My every day carry gun looks so disreputable it has become a joke among my friends.  It is a Glock 19 2nd Gen...with a whole LOT of rounds down the pipe.  The tenifer finish is shiny from a gazbillion presentations from the holster.  The night sights recently had to be replaced with a new set of Trijicons after they went dim.  New Wolff springs every 20,000 rounds whether they need replacing or not.  Ghost Rocket 3.5 connector....the outside looks like my first car....but inside...she is still sweeter than my wife when I first met her.

Awesome, then I'll compare it to a good work truck if my friends give me any flak.  And I'll make fun of their Hollywood shininess if they wanna get smart, "I didn't know Julia Roberts was selling her gun collection."

Thanks all, I have a new appreciation for a weapon's life experiences. ;D
