True heroes each and every one.  "I just did what I could" or "I was in the right palce at the right time" or (most often) "The guys that didn't make it deserve this, I wear it for them".

The most common words in society that are missing from these stories are "What's in it for me?"

The words heard the most here but missing from today's society are "It was my duty, my privilege, my opportunity ...."

These men weren't just in the right place at the right time - they were the right men for the situations!

It may come as a surprise but there are less than 100 living recipients. If you have a chance to meet and speak to one, it is a grace. This from the MOH Society website...

Total Recipients: 3,448
Living Recipients: 98
Double Recipients: 19

The MSM doesn't talk about all the "Medals" that have been awarded for actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. But every now and then on a military website you will see mention of a young soldier airman or Marine being awarded America's highest honor.
Yes I left out the Navy, Corpsman may get sworn into the Navy but they are MARINES.

I was honored to meet one when I was in Germany back in 1979 or so.  God forgive me but I cannot recall his name.  He was another First Sergeant with me.  When the NCO ball came about it was AMAZING how you could spot that medal from a LONG WAY across a VERY CROWDED room.  He would not speak of it .  All I know is it was VN time period.

Tom, Seal Teams are Navy too.  There are plenty of "Sand Sailors" on the ground over there.  In fact, I have a Capt. (O-6) buddy whos Capt.(O-6) wife is getting ready for a one year hitch starting in September.  Seems that Naval officers today may not make rank unless they spend a little time getting dirty...

Embarrassed to say I forgot about them, even after watching the video of Marcus Luttrel at the last NRA convention.

Met 2 Commandants of the Marine Corps while I was in, Gen Wilson was awarded his on one of the Pacific Islands (Tarawa I think) Gen. Barrow received his for actions during the retaking of Seoul, during the Korean War. and a math teacher at my Junior High school received "The Medal" for actions during the "Pueblo incident" He had been a Marine assigned to the ship when it was seized by the North Koreans in 68.
Only 2 Marines have been awarded the Medal of Honor twice, Dan Daly and Smedly Butler.

Sad but there are also imposters floating around that you must be careful of. Just like the numerous false "SEALs", "Green Berets" etc. If you have time just go out to the Medal of Honor site link I have in the previous post to check folks out.

It's a federal crime to even OWN a genuine Congressional medal of Honor that was not awarded to you or inherited from the person it was awarded to, it's a crime to buy or sell them as well. a few years ago they got a conviction on a guy under the "Stolen Valor" law for that, what tipped off his accuser was that the Medal he wore was a Civil War Army design and he claimed to have been a Marine. He got quite a bit of jail time as well as fines. He had been a big shot with a veterans organization.
In the military, the lower rank salutes the Senior rank and the Senior returns it, Except if the Junior man is wearing the Medal of Honor, That is saluted first regardless of rank.

A lot fewer than that, in the way we think of it today. In the Civil War, when it first came out, it was thrown around pretty casually, unit awards, awards for commanders etc. I don't know the numbers, but the Medal as we understand it today, is a very exclusive club, less even than 3,448. A very amazing thing, not be forgotten.

1 from the Coast Guard.  Must be an interesting story, not that all of them wouldn't be.
