Title: New 1911
Post by: jaybet on August 05, 2007, 11:18:51 AM
Well, after all the wondering, worrying, and all the advice many of you have offered, I finally pulled the trigger (pardon the pun). I bought a 1911 yesterday. I had asked about the Taurus, looked into STI, was looking at lower end pistols, thinking about a slightly used Springfield, because it just doesn't make any sense for me to get a custom or even semi-custom.

I was in my favorite indoor range and had it down to a low end Kimber and a Sig Target. I was looking at the Kimber because, well, it's a Kimber and the finish work was awesome. I was looking at the Sig because it was appealing to me, I liked the features, and it felt better to me than the Kimber.

I went with the Sig because it felt better in my hand and because my first Sig, a Pro 2022 has been flawless.
Took care of the paperwork, checked the lubrication, and went out to the range. Freehanding right out of the box the first two clips were within five inches at fifteen yards. I don't know what that means to shooters, but that's pretty good for me with a strange gun. I'll need to sight it in.

Adjustable night sights, all steel, checkered everything, Nitron finish and dark rosewood grips...I'm in love[/size].

How does that work? Two cylinders? We have a .357 Blackhawk, but only one cylinder.

I agree, we need pictures..  ;D

Indeed, what choice differences I would have made if I had to do it over again.  We have 2 Kimbers from '98 and they have been perfect.  One of those Sig GSR's is calling my name, along with a 226, but I have enough pistols for now..  Gads.. did I just SAY that?..

Those Kimbers are perfect because Smith n Wesson. They did most of the build and were responsible for the external extractor which after their falling out over the LAPD gun Kimber couldnt figure out how to get em to work correctly.

Sarge says pictures, Pictures it is!
No light rail- I like to hold the light at left arm's length in case they fire first.

Nice gun jaybethel, only thing you are missing is a (1) Mag well (2) Fiberoptic front sight , everything else seem to be there. Good pic.

Is a mag well an aftermarket deal? I'm not familiar with how that goes on.

Yes it is and it will speed up your reloads. I think for me though that the Fiber optic front sight is more important. Unless you really dig black on black sights finding that front sight eaiser allows you to focus on the trigger-control more. Which as we know boys-n-girls is the MOST IMPORTANT!  ;D
Throwing a new mag in fast is very cool also.  8) There are a lot of gunsmiths who can do a magwell easy. A bunch more who can ruin your gun. So pay the money and do the research man.

I must agree on the Fiber Optic front sight.  They even have some with tritium  (SP?) now so you get the best of both worlds... but then again if you need the tritium  go with the Laser Grips.  Nice gun though

Good evening here Jaybethel, if you are competent with detail stripping your new 1911, I can unequivacably recommend the Smith and Alexander mag well, if you can remove your mainspring housing, you can add a magwell yourself. It will look nice and fit. If you own a Para, it will have to be fitted, Para's fault, not any body elses. But you bought a SIG, ;D I have not fitted one but my guess is their dimensions are right on the money. I admit I am prejudiced  ;) as Alan Smith invented the mainspring housing magwell, and is my friend, ( even if he is from New York) great guy and still lives in my little suburb here in Texas. He also invented the ambidextrous mag release for 1911's, and has a fine beaver tail grip safety.

Now I have used the Wilson under the grip magwells and they're not bad, you or someone will have to relieve the grip on the underside for the magwell hooks to clear, if you do it yourself it's really inexpensive, if you pay someone to do it, might as well buy a mainspring housing magwell.

A note of caution, and this may not be true now, I bought a Wilson 2 piece main spring housing magwell, and it would only work with his magazines, I had to relieve it quite a bit for rogers, or mecgar, etc... to seat. As I said, this may not be true now, as i did that 15 years ago. ???

Big +1 for

i have had the same problem with SAA mag well using ChipMcCormick 10rd. mags. FYI be careful of a "gunsmith" who uses a Dremal for the opening of a mag well. Just saying man.

Thanks for the advice, as usual!
Right now the night sights are just what I'm needing- other than range it's my new scumbag stopper at home, so they work out well. I like those crazy new sights though.....Hmmm.

The mag well is a great idea, in fact I was a little surprised at how tight the opening was for the mags....thought it might be a little more radius-ed or tapered or something. No big thing though. I'm going to shoot it for awhile and see what happens.

A gunsmith with a dremel in his hand....is that like a plumber with a chainsaw?
