Sales of guns, ammo still high
One shop says the "hoarding" of ammunition since Obama's election has created a shortage.
Four months after the election of President Barack Obama, firearms and ammunition sales in Tulsa remain at a fever pitch.
Popular self-protection ammunition is often sold out at local stores, weapons are flying off shelves and the state reports an 87 percent increase in concealed carry permit applications for February 2009 over February 2008.
"People are hoarding. They're creating a shortage," Jim Prall at Sports World on 41st Street said of ammunition sales. "We've sold more ammunition in the last three months than we sold last year."
Gun sales spiked in November with the election of Barack Obama and Democrats adding to their majority in Congress. But local gun dealers say the spike is turning into a steady climb with political worries about gun rights as well as worries about the economy and potential for increased crime.
Prall said his store planned ahead for the increase, having seen a similar spike
after Bill Clinton was elected, but the previous jump in sales pales in comparison to what's happening now.
"Most we're selling now we got back in September, but we bought pallets then where normally we wouldn't have ordered that much."
The surprise sales come with .380 caliber semi- automatic pistols. A relatively small self-protection weapon, it's not one that people typically fire in great quantity at the firing range, Prall said. Yet, the ammunition is now hard to find. "Nobody would have predicted that," he said.
"What's happened is everybody is afraid because the Democrats are anti-gun," said David Stone, president of Dong's Guns and Ammo on East Admiral Place.
Sales are so intense that Stone has limited sales of .380 ammo to one box per customer at Dong's. He has .380-caliber handguns for sale, and likes to be able to sell ammunition to whoever buys a gun, he said.
A shipment of 10 Ruger .380 LCP handguns was sold in 24 hours this week — seven the first day, three the next. "Last week I had 28 boxes of .380, rationed to one per person, and it was gone in three days," Stone said.
Academy Sporting Goods stores also are low on .380 ammo. "The other day we got 16 boxes of .380 and a guy came in first thing and bought all 16," said Jon Ide, hunting and fishing sales associate at the 41st Street store. "A few people are doing all the buying, and it's the people who are trying to just get a box or two that can't find any."
Similar stories across the country.
So, the shortage is due to all of us wisely stocking up. Therefore the dealers can increase the price because people will still pay.
Economics is a love/hate thing when it comes to ammo.

I'm hoarding some of mine in the berm at the end of the range!
I buy it to shoot it, the JHP's are for hoarding and I've had plenty since before the election. Wally World is STILL out but everywhere else seems to have some stock left. I replaceed all of what I burned up a few weeks ago, cost me a little more (200 to replace 150) but I can get it...
It's great when the kids are grown and the little woman tells me to go play...she told me to order another revolver today, if I want too...what ya'll think?

I think that's awesome Timothy.
I know it is a "Duh" to us, but I kind of enjoy it when it makes a national news outlet. (Because Libs read it) ;)
Because ammo is high, I have "hoarded" also, so when the wife asks me if I'm going to the "range" with the guys, I tell her Yes Dear, this one:

I was in the Cheaper Than Dirt retail store(BTW they are not the same guys as the web CTD) in Fort Worth this morning. It was a freakin' MAD HOUSE!!!!! Lots of shoppers (all very well behaved I might add) and quite a lot of ammo to go around. Picked up some .45acp and 5.56... ;D
A whole lot of hoarding goin' on... and rightly so.

Well Tom, it was about 60 up here today so the courses are thawing out and the ranges are getting busy. Saw a bunch of riders today as well. I'm sure that Bermuda grass you southern boys hack it through is coming around already....I made a business trip to S. FL several years ago and brought a ten pound sledge to putt with.... ;D Man the greens were slow compared to what I was used too...

Wife called while I was out shopping today. "I'm in Walmart, they have 500 rounds of 9MM for $49, thought I'd grab a box" Her reply? "At that rate get more than one."
Stockpiling is fun.
-
I'm not hording, I'm just "buying it forward".
-
I don't consider it hoarding until you are buying more than you can use in the foreseeable future. I can't find what I need to shoot tomorrow :'( Hell ... I've got a secret ... no telling tt, and I can't play with it :'(
-
I'm not hoarding, I'm actually picking up the good stuff for fellow employees. One of my local dealers somehow got Fed HST .45 and 9mm in recently. He's a good guy and saved it for the people involved in law enforcement and security who have to supply their own ammo. Didn't gouge the price, either. $28 box of fifty in .45.
And my wife - who is not usually interested in all things firearms - told me in no uncertain terms to go to the gun show April 4-5 to see if I can get any deals. Seems Obama and his lackeys (or is he their lackey?) have this effect on people...

The guy in the Tulsa World article who said people were hoarding is a place where I refuse to spend my money in Tulsa. I sometimes swing by Dong's, but mostly spend my $$$'s Lash's Gun Emporium and some at OPS.
Enough said.

Sounds like Marshal and me. He is making an order for primers etc..and I tell him to double it. He said, " well, they are ---$ of dollars."
I say," good. Whatever they are..... double the order..
They don't go bad and we WILL use them. "
I don't look at it as hoarding. I look at it as being smart and prepared.
-
Marshal'ette, where the hell are you ordering primers from? No one has them around here! I was able to get 5000sp when Michael mentioned Natchez but that's it.

Absolutely, twyacht! And if you need suggestions on which revolver to get and where to send it, just let me know... ;D
-
I'm not hoarding. I don't have more than a couple of thousand rounds of any one caliber. ;)

Americans are Hoarding Ammo
At least the smart ones are. ;)

"I have long preached that one should never be caught short in his personal armament, either in regard to the weapons or the ammunition. Keep up your supply, and do not neglect the 22 rimfire, which may well turn into the "ballistic wampum" I have spoken of the past. If you have any loading equipment, stock primers, which may constitute the weakest link in the chain."

I'm actually glad people are hoarding... I know just like after y2k, ammo will be for sell very cheap in the next few years from people that bought into panic buying. in 03 I bough a 10 sealed cases of 00 buck for $100 at a gun show.( he was a guy walking around with a sign on his back) I worked in a high volume FFL during the Y2k thing, we were going thru pallets of buck shot on a week end. it was selling for ~ $4 for 5 shots. Still have a case of it, the rest was shot up in a SD shot gun class in 05.

TAB,
First of all get a better avatar, like the last one......Or maybe you can get a picture of Jesse Abbate and that would do too..... ;D
Isn't free market economics great? I agree with you there will be some great ammo deals in the next few years and great deals on firearms too. The thing about a free market is we have to accept it on its terms and that is what most get upset about when things like this happen.

Its much better full size... trust me...

Primers? What are those? Do they even make large or small pistol primers anymore? >:( I sure as hell can't find any!

I envy you guys who can hoard. The only range in town here is range ammo only, ostensibly (and probably for insurance reasons). This means though, that with the exception of shotgun shells, that all the stock pile is just wasted money for me me unless I'm willing to drive an hour to shoot (i'm not), or the world ends, in which case it will suck to be me. I can justify a couple of hundred rounds of 9mm defense loads, that I'll hopefully never shoot, and a couple bricks of .22, but beyond that the 500rd bulk packs that tempt me, I have to pass by. Sigh!.

Its atleat an hour to my closes range( 28 miles actually, on a street with traffic that would make most people shoot your selfs, I kid you not, to go 7 miles at rush hour takes 2 hours if your lucky.)
-
Some might look in my room and say I'm hoarding, however, when I shot up 20% of each my 9mm and .40 S&W last night at bullseye. I also went and cleaned out all of Mankato of their American Eagle 308 (a whole 140 rounds).
Hoarding ... BS ... I'm just trying to feed my habit and can't keep up with minimum daily requirements as published by the USDA ;)

A gun is a really crappy club when empty. ;D

Not two of my recent toys, but that is a different topic ... Oh ... and I'd much prefer they go bang with a long range greeting ;D

Could probably be the case with any gun butt

The "metal" buttplate on my Mauser was/is there for a reason,,.... and comfort d*** sure wasn't it,...
Long Pointy thing on one end, and a face breaker on the other,....

I would thing the heft of the M1 ( ~ 12 lbs) would do alot more damage then some of the lighter modern fireamrs. Not something I want to get hit with.
