Title: Lose your property for growing food?
Post by: runstowin on March 17, 2009, 06:20:45 PM

Some small farms and organic food growers could be placed under direct supervision of the federal government under new legislation making its way through Congress.

Food Safety Modernization Act

House Resolution 875, or the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009, was introduced by Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., in February. DeLauro's husband, Stanley Greenburg, works for Monsanto – the world's leading producer of herbicides and genetically engineered seed.

DeLauro's act has 39 co-sponsors and was referred to the House Agriculture Committee on Feb. 4. It calls for the creation of a Food Safety Administration to allow the government to regulate food production at all levels – and even mandates property seizure, fines of up to $1 million per offense and criminal prosecution for producers, manufacturers and distributors who fail to comply with regulations

From the sounds of it, its only for people on the comm'l end, not the guy growing it to feed directly to his family.

My brother in law has 400 acres in NC, and has strawberries, peaches, okra, asparagus, etc,.. and a road side produce stand. It has been a family farm since the 1800's. Everything I read sounds like more Gov interference effecting the "little" guy.

Oh, noticed it was sponsored by mega food co-ops, and herbicide manufacturers, .....

The small family farm has been at risk for years, it seems BHO is the fast track to try harder.......

Thank you for the link, I just fwd. it to him.

Anyone tells me to regulate my tiny plot, of mater's, herbs, etc,.. is going to have problems.....

Wrong once again - the organic back-lot growers have been burning up the Internet on this one, it will apply to all yard plots, not just the commercial folks.

comm'l means selling your produce...

Federal regulators will be tasked with ensuring that food producers, processors and distributors

no where does it say the guy with a garden in his back yard for personal use is going to be targeted.

Keep thinking "inside the box" TAB....

Commercial is also SMALL farms that count on seasonal crops to provide a LIVING. Strawberries in April, May for my brother in law help him and his family, selling the bounty of a good harvest is what farmers do,... As they have for a LONG LONG time.

Why does the Gov't HAVE to stick their nose beyond NORMAL overbearing regs. It wasn't a small local farmer that had tainted peanut butter, it was the corporate processing plant....

The road side stand selling collards in the spring has to be gov't regulated?

STUPID!!!!!!

Death of a thousand cuts, just like 2A issues....

TAB, the small farmer does NOT get a lot of money from aid.  Some big farmers do, and a LOT is "lost" in the management and distribution of the aid.

The stuff dreamed up for farm regulations make gun bans seem logical  :o

never had a grant, never had a tax "break", all the smal biz loans I have gotton have been from hard money lenders.  now I have done goverment sponsored rehab work( IE contractors bid out to remodel homes that had been taken for what ever reason)  All of those were given away to charitys, like womens shelters and foster care.   My bid just happend to be the lowest( by about $200 bucks lol)

Other then me not getting paid right away it was a great job, didn't have to put up with the normal BS from the building dept/ inspectors.  Every thing was rubber stamped and green lighted.  Even the cert of habitabilty was a cake walk, took 2 hours.  Normally they take 2 weeks and atleast a dozen people to sign off on it.  Its not uncommon for them to take a month... Its really sad, all you need is proof that you paid all the fees and passed all your inspections... It should be a quick 10 min computer search... instead you have to go around to all the diffrent agencys and get them to sign off.

That stuff comes from World Nut Daily. ::) Farah will print anything to keep people coming.
I'd like to see a news analysis or update about the legislation. Lots of stuff is proposed and soon forgotten and it's done to keep a few donors happy. It could remind you of 2 Samuel 23.11, 12 though.

Small family farms get literally NONE of any farm subsidies, they get an agriculture tax credit, and that's about it. Oh, they can qualify for low interest loans, but their production/yield has to be big enough. The large Jolly Green Giant, mega sized farms that have been running the smaller farms out of business for decades are getting subsidies (money), because certain numbers have to be met for American production, it's an old program.

Competition with produce from other countries, and the profit margin on a can of green beans is very tight. So the large harvesting equip. which costs more every year, and the CORPORATE salaries, labor costs, marketing, advertising, etc,... means the gov't pays to maintain the "status quo".  All admin's since FDR and the Dust Bowl days, have been subsidizing farms.

It initially was gauged at the ag based American economy which has shifted over the last 50+ years.

Google the Dept. Of Ag. in your state, they have ALOT of power, and not structured for the smaller farms anymore.

Once again, the "little" guy gets shafted,...

I bet if you could follow the money, you would find big factory farm companies, and of course Monsanto behind this and other efforts to destroy the small farmer, and small rancher.
