Hello all!! Need to blow off some steam, so here goes. It was back to school day for my 11yr. old daughter today. She is entering her first year in middle school this year. My wife and I were going thru the normal forms filling in the usual info when we get get to the student handbook. Most of the rules I can live with since they do protect and give the impression of safety for the kids. First let me state I'm not saying 6,7 and 8th graders need to be armed at school, although I fell all staff members should be trained and armed at all times. Like that will ever happen! What really got my blood boiling was when my daughter says to me, as I'm looking at the conduct section, Oh yeah dad, my teacher said that we can't defend ourselves against an attack no matter what and that self defence is the same as fighting and we would be punished the same as the attacker. Low and behold there it was in black and white. I totally lost for a moment ( more like all afternoon ) >:(. I instructed my daughter to always defend herself and that her mom, myself and our attorney would deal with the aftermath. No wonder we are becoming a nation of cowards, it's being drilled into our kids everday under our noses at school. A little futher down I came across another little gem that stated the usual no firearms, knives or anything that could be construde as a weapon is prohibited on school property.I lost it a second time as the school supply list required her and every other kid at school to has a metal compass. I thought my Spyderco native has a needle point, this thing could serve better as a backup weapon to my carry piece. What are these people thinking?!?!?! The liberal mindset never fails to amaze me. They also stated that it is a crime under the law for anyone to carry a weapon on school property which under Kentucky law is false. Our law states that any CCW holder can lawfully have a weapon in their vehicle as long as it is not removed from said vehicle. More liberal propaganda aimed at my rights. Bottom line here folks we are being hit from all sides with liberal BS and now our children are being brainwashed in the name of education. We must become more vigilant in our responsabilities as gun owners and parents. As Mr. Bane has stated our voice and numbers do matter to the politicians and can change things if we will speak up. Education is great and I want my daughter to excell the highest level she can, but I want her to be safe and able to ensure her safety as she moves forward, not brainwashed by a liberal agenda. Sorry about spelling, I'm still seeing mostly red. God Bless America, we need it.

This is truly a shame. As you say, we are becoming a nation of cowards, and our government is leading the way. They WANT us to be this way.

It is something, isn't it, the liberal mindset. The only way you can change this is to change the school board, get people on the board who have some cajones to stand up to the NEA, the teacher's union.
And yes, our children are being intentionally dumbed down to never question authority, never break the rules, be punished for the slightest little thing, and be good little consumers and worker drones. I moved out of an ultra liberal town - the effort to change would have required a neutron device and I wasn't allowed to own one. Seriously, the biggest problem in that town were the very people who had to put up with this nonsense, and they mostly agreed with the policies of the school - it makes the children "safer" don't you know!
It is the number one engine driving the homeschooling movement, something I would seriously consider if I were in your shoes. One way to know that homeschooling is a viable alternative is the vicious and over the top attacks by the NEA against it.
Good luck JoJo.

Home school all the way.. We do it, my sister does it, and a few others that we know. In this area there are more kids in home school than in the public school. Some of it is mindset, some of it is convenience.
We used to foster kids as well, and those have to go to public school. We had a brother/sister that were in the 25th percentile for their grade level... guess what? They passed onto the next grades with flying colors. When I blew a gasket about it, since I had the test scores and such, the answer was "they will learn it in the next grade".. yeah right!! The other answer was "poor downtrodden children". They were already showing them how to use the victim mentality.
Reminds me of the guy that sued the school system after he graduated since he had never learned how to read..

All the liberals want is diplomacy aka "talk, talk, talk." No amount of talking has ever won a war!

Thanks gentelmen!!! We have looked in to home schooling and also a private Christian school that just opened last year. What gets me the most about our school board is that I personally know 4 of it's member's and they hunt and shoot. Both my state rep. and senator and strong supporters of the 2A and have a proven voting record on favor of pro gun, pro self defence issues, but don't seem to want to touch this issue with a ten foot pole. I as well as friends have spoken personally to each of them to try to make much needed changes to our educational system. We have in KY. whats called KERA and basically this reform act took most of the controll of local boards away and gave it to individual schools. The site based committies as they are called, which are made up of 3 teachers, the principal and 3 parents that are out numbered from the start, set nearly all of the schools policies and dicisions as to the way all money is spent. All our boards do is give a general guideline for the SBC's to follow, but under the law the SBC's can add to or take away what ever they want. Our boards don't even have the athourity to hire, fire or discipline any pricipal or teacher. Parents have no recourse for just about anything concerning thier child. I am giving serious thought to a lawsuit as this is taxation without representation >:(. Ladies and gentlemen of this forum if your state starts talking about education reform and claim it's " for the benefit of your children " don't believe it for a second. It will be a benefit alright. It will be a benefit for the liberal's, not the children. Thanks again for your time.

Anyone who claims some legislation is for the benefit of the children I immediately disbelieve until verified by at least two trustworthy independent sources. So much crap has been thrown our way "for the children" it is sickening. Even the Simpsons make fun of that, for heaven's sake.
Go with the homeschooling or the small private school, and work to overturn KERA. Sounds like the teacher's union got to the legislature. Also, the school board still controls the principal, get his/her sorry behind out and get someone in who will work with the parents. Otherwise, look at what is happening in MA these days - a real nightmare.

As long as we're blaming the government and the liberals - both of whom deserve much blame and scorn - let's not leave out the other guilty (if somewhat less obvious) parties - THE LAWYERS.

Your dead on someguy!!! It was a judge (former LAWYER) that started this whole KERA mess in the first place.

This is why I am in favor of the voucher education system. The money goes with your kids, whether you choose to home school or take private school. This will make the public schools more responsive to parental needs. Then let the capitalist market dictate which school gets the money and which don't. But of course the teachers union will fight you all the way on this one. They don't want to lose control! They are very powerful, so it's an uphill fight. Bottomline is we shouldn't pay for schooling that is contrary to our beliefs.

It's not just the liberals that have screwed this up. I know a couple of teachers pretty well, and they say the last few years the only thing anyone in administration is worried about is passing the "No Child Left Behind" hurdles. Your test scores go down, you are out on your ass. Simple formula, but no child is left behind because the boat isn't GOING anywhere...it's dead in the water while they fill out forms and comply, comply, comply. My wife was on a school board for 9 years and all they did was fight the state and the principal for the sake of the kids, and do stuff to keep the lawyers off their backs.
Kinda like buying a handgun in NJ.
By the way...for those few folks for whom it matters...where I live in NJ is BELOW the Mason Dixon line.

First we had Head Start and now it's No Child Left Behind. Something isn't working. A politicians answer for everthing is to through money at it. Politicians are there for the money. They say they do for the kids, but the bottom line is the almighty buck. A great help to our kids would be for us to win over more teacher's to our side then maybe, just maybe we could have the power of the teacher's union to aid in our fight to do really do what is best for the children.

The drone manufacturing aspect of public schooling has taken over in many areas. The NEA and other "elite" educators want to tell you how to do it, want you to come to them for approval and then when little Susie or Johnny gets screwed up it's still going to be "your fault" not theirs when someone parents the NEA way.
Hey, God put the parents in charge of their children...don't abdicate your God-given right. That's like a pilot listening to the tower tell him to reposition a mile east with a mountain range 1/2 mile east. It's not intuitive, we are to respect authority, but because most people put teachers on too high a pedestal they get bamboozeled into thinking teachers are the parent's authority. If you really love your children the way I suspect the people on this board do, you'll no doubt die for them...so what's a few fights with administrators and a day or two of lost work compared to laying down your life for your child? Take a little time to think about how to fix the situation you may be in.
For example, a friend's daughter was supposed to do a book report on an book that went over the top....it had a few pages that were something like you'd read in a Playboy or Penthouse...but it was supposed to be a classic. My buddy was distraught because, wouldn't you know it, this was the last required book report before graduation...what were they to do....no book report....no graduation.
My first word...think....then I told 'em to take a deep breath and look at what is going on....tunnel vision had taken over...who says this is a classic? Well, the teacher of course and what were they going to do.....well, my bud couldn't think so I had to do it for 'em...I said go to the principal....bud stopped me and said the principal would stick up for the teacher....I said tell the principal you were going to have the teacher charged with exposing a child to pornography and if he didn't change the requirement he was an accessory....bud said, "OH"!
No more problem.
There are good and bad teachers (like good and bad anywhere else)...but none of them are gods...and, truthfully, many or the troublemakers are in education because they couldn't hack the harder stuff (except for math teachers...not many jobs out there for math majors). So, respect teachers, but don't make the mistake to worship them. Your children are far more valuable then some arrogant teacher's liberal agenda.
