Title: The 65 Pro-gun Dems

Quote
From the AP this afternoon:

Sixty-five House Democrats said Wednesday that they would oppose any attempt by the Obama administration to revive a ban on military-style weapons that President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1994 and President George W. Bush let expire.

The pro-gun Democrats, led by Rep. Mike Ross, D-Ark., wrote Attorney General Eric Holder that they would "actively oppose any effort to reinstate the 1994 ban, or to pass any similar law."

They urged the administration to avoid a "long and divisive fight over a gun control issue" at a time when Washington needs to concentrate on the economic crisis.

The House letter came a day after Montana's two Democratic senators, Max Baucus and Jon Tester, wrote a similar letter to Holder saying the Justice Department should enforce existing laws before considering new gun ownership restrictions. "We will strongly oppose any legislation that will infringe upon the rights of individual gun owners," they said.

The letters came after Holder, during a news conference to announce the arrest of Mexican drug dealers, said the drug cartels were obtaining high-powered weapons like the AK-47 from U.S. gun stores and said the Obama administration supported reinstituting the ban on the sale of assault-style weapons.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has said she plans to introduce legislation to bring back the weapons ban. Feinstein was an author of the 1994 bill, which banned 19 types of semiautomatic, military-style guns. The law expired under the Bush administration in 2004. Another long-term goal is requiring that all gun shows conduct background checks before selling firearms.

The National Rifle Association has said it is mobilizing to stop any assault weapons ban, and the opposition of 65 House Democrats, many from rural or conservative districts with strong pro-gun sentiments, probably would doom any legislative drive to restrict gun ownership.

Here is the letter:

Again, not to say I told you so, but... Lets do ourselves a favor and thank these guys. At least send a letter to Ross, Baucus and Tester. One Atta'boy is worth a whole lot of angry letters. If they are in your state, or better yet district, please send something by mail. An actual stamped envelope is worth 100 emails and 50 phone calls. The reason is that it demonstrates that you cared enough to buy the stamp and walk to the post office. The same amount of effort required to vote absentee. (The same is NOT true of pre-printed mass mailings, those get roundfiled). If we can make sure that Obama will get bloody in his own party over this, odds are good its dead. Yes the DiFis and Pelosis will push it, put they're just keeping their base happy. No one wants to bring this up unless they've got it in the bag. Go Blue Dogs!

Mr. Peterson from Minnesota signed, but Mr. Walz (a highly rated pro Second Amendment) did not.  I have sent Mr. Walz an e-mail and will post his reply when it comes.  He is very good at responding to mail, e-mail and phone calls.  Very slow, but reliable so far.

Damnit every time I try to download the letter it comes up as a corrupted file. My puter won't display it :-[

Could someone check to see if my congresscritter, Chris Carney  (PA10) signed it?  :-* please.

I want to either congratulate him or give him the business, but I gotta know,Please Please :)

You appear to be well represented.  Not only did Christopher Carney sign it, but Tim Holden, John Murtha and Jason Altmire all did as well.

I'm really surprised that 2 from California signed it. They're not from my district, but I'll thank them. It'd be nice to not have guns as politicized in CA.

Our county, which is often referred to as the "Red County" (magazine of the same name) has all Republican Reps, except one, Loretta Sanchez. Of course, she didn't sign. It's a strange coincidence that her district is the only odd numbered district in the County too.

Smells like mid-term elections coming,.... and the sucking up has begun,,....

Chris Dodd D-Ct. is up for re-election also. 50% disapproval rating in his home state,...

Seems like John Murtha D-Pa. just won't go away,....

P.S. Only ONE of Florida's "D's" signed. Boyd....

Not very encouraging, down here,...

Although having over 700,000 CCW permit holders in the state is,...That's almost 1 (the "M" word)..... 8)

M58 thank you! ;D  May the ghost of JMB make all your bullseyes X's.

Now I can thank Mr Carney for once. Imagine that, 4 Dems from PA signed the letter ;D
I am surprised Kanjorski did not, but I digress...thank you again.

I'd say, as one Floridian to another, that if you bring the tar, I'll bring the feathers, but as a "good" quaker boy, I'll go with friendly persuasion, Gary Cooper style (or if all else fails Richard Nixon style[and no, we generally don't brag about him]). I will send that 700k figure to esteemed my rep.Again, its not finding the whore with the heart of gold, its being the high bidder.

Getting ready to deploy some sweet reason in the pursuit of consensus ;D

Our only rep is on the list - but he does have a A rating from the NRA. But it is good - will drop him a note this weekend to thank him.

Ours with an A rating didn't participate, and that is what I asked him about.

He did.  He's #39 on the hit parade.

OK, how about that, 5 Dems from PA signed the letter! Pretty good for a NE state.

BTW Murtha was endorsed by the NRA in the last election, so he is not all that bad. His missteps on the Iraq war notwithstanding, at least he votes the right way on guns. We need to encourage more Democrats to our side of the argument, even if they are wrong on other issues.

 >:( DON'T TRUST ANY OF THEM!!!!!  >:(

Do some research and find out how they have voted on other gun issues in the past
before you start patting them on the back and telling them good job.

They could just be waiting till after the 2010 elections are over...

It is true that it may just be feel good to protect their seats for a 2011 surprise, because if you read the letter it is not about Rights as much as it is about avoiding nasty fights.  However, it is a chance to say thank you and be positive with those we need to blast from time to time.  If we wish to rip them we should also be willing to say thank you.

Just like we need to fight this Court action on concealed carry in National Parks even though it is just an injunction and my not amount to anything, we need to be thankful for words that say "don't push a ban ... now."  Every negative is a negative and every positive is a positive.  At the end of the day we can tally the wins and losses and see what the final score is.

And the GOP isn't waiting till 2012? Look, they're all mercenaries They only pay attention if there's something in it for them. If they think they can safely ignore you they will. Those Dems went out on a limb against their own leadership and president because they thought we would reward them. If we don't, see how fast they'll do it again. You've got to show some love to get some love. If you don't, you'll be standing alone at the end of the dance because you blew off the girl who was flirting with you because she wasn't pretty enough, and the beauty queen that you had your eye on knows that even if she goes home with another guy, she can still call you tomorrow get a free dinner out of you. You take what you can get andunderstand that in this game its all negoitable. This may make me sound like a cynic, but hey, I don't carry a gun because I need a little ballast on my left side. ;)

Exactly right, reward good behavior and you are likely to get more of it.

If your dog pees on the floor and chews up your shoes, and suddenly seems to give up carpet wetting, you reward that change so it will continue.

Worry about the shoes at a different time.
