From Bane's Blog:
http://michaelbane.blogspot.com/2009/03/gats-and-heaters-and-roscoes-oh-my.html
I'm 100% on that, which is why I'm enthused at yet another of Henning's interests, the newly formed American Zoot Shooters Association.
AZSA is a multi-gun sport in which participants dress in 1920s costumes and compete against the clock engaging targets for the best possible score. Zoot Shooters must use firearms that are correct for the time surrounding Prohibition. Costumes may be of any character type reflecting the era (i.e. gangster, law enforcement, flapper, bootlegger, politician, etc.).
Oh come on, Tactical Tommys, lighten up...it's supposed to be fun! Shuck those 5.11s, the tactical vests, Oakley shades and boots, and that long-billed baseball cap with the SureFire logo and light up a nice Thompson!
Besides, while you can argue all you want about the efficacy of a Single Action Army as a self-defense tool, you gotta give it up for 1911 Super .38s, .45 Thompsons and that every-popular Browning A5/Remington Model 11.
Here is their website. Go check it out just for the video on the front page:

*Yeah, Bane, I think I bested ya on the title on this one. 8)

At the risk of sounding like a fanboy: Oh my God! When did this start, and where do I sign up? Seriousley, I thought cowboy action shooting was cool when I discovered it, but just not my scene gun wise. But this, well the twenties produced some the best music in American history, great clothes (who here hasn't wished they could get away with a fedora at least once) completely screwed up violent politics, a setting where a cigar and a single malt was considered a proper lunch, and oh yeah...guns. As someone who's spilled a lot ink on drug war politics, I've done lot research on prohibition too.I just got rid of great grandads smith in .32 because the cylinder was out of time and it wasn't worth fixing (at least not till today) I still have the parker though, and maybe my flirting with AKs and ARs is over, 'cause well the BAR is a man's gun and 30.06 is as common as dirt.
If someone wants to sponsor me on a Tommygun, I'll be sure to stencil your name on my fedora. I think maybe an eyepatch to go as Big Bill Haywood of the IWW. Curious though, if the Danny Boy scene from Millers crossing could be safetly reproduced? ;D All I need now is a Chris Craft teak speed boat and if Haz wants to sign up we could be the '20s era Crockett and Tubbs, when the smuggling down here in South Florida was done right and real men didn't wear pastel (note to Haz, I get to be Crockett). I hope this does develop into somethig.

I've really been obsessing over Tommy guns the last few days...and this has put me over the top! ;D Every time I go to my local gun shop to look at AR platform rifles...I can't help but be distracted by this gorgeous Thompson 1927A1 they have there. But, alas...no money. :'(

Very nice! I wonder if I can get my wife to join me in flapper garb...as long as she gets her own Tommy, she might. ;D

No, my friend, three GUNS are for pansies. Its rifle, pistol and sabre. I interned for a judge in college who was a big civil war reenactor. We got along because we were both into falconry and fencing. The problem was, he did a lot of those old calvalry drills that involved tent pegging and doing violence to watermelons while jumping obstacles. One of his horse's ears was decidedly shorter than the other. I, of course never asked. :-X I will say the horse was very well mannered, if a bit jumpy.

Have I mentioned how cool this is. Just to make my point that for the music alone the '20s are worth remembering...and oh yeah, the guns here's a piec by the Squirrel Nut Zippers and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (bonus points for the names alone). Can't let Jumbofrank have all the fun.

Very, very cool history CZshooter. I would reccomend everyone read this. And lord, jumping from running board to running board in pursuit? Thats some serious law enforcement! Vic Mackey and Jack Bauer would be put to shame. I am a bit curious about the period bullet proof vests. I didn't know such things existed. What were they made of? Did they even work? Given the low velocities of the time and the fact that standard police issue was .32 maybe. Just curious.

Early soft vests were of silk, cotton or other cloth...

I am still scratching my head about the Zoot suit thing. Looks like a Mexican gang banger style of the 1940's. Prohibition was over for a decade. No old Mafia boss, Al Capone or Irish gang of the era was ever seen in that goofy garb.

That was the era of the tailor-fitted 3-piece suit...complimented, of course, with a fedora. 8)
Interesting read on the bullet-proof vests...this sounds like what I've seen in photographs:
During the late 1920s through the early 1930s, criminals in the United States began wearing less-expensive vests made from cotton padding and cloth. These early vests were capable of generally protecting against handgun bullets such as .22, .25, S&W .32 Long, S&W .32, .380 ACP, and .45 ACP traveling at slower speeds of up to approximately 1000 ft/s (300 m/s). This led to the development of the .357 Magnum cartridge for the use of law enforcement agents such as the FBI to overcome these vests.

Yeah, thats what Bane addressed in his blog also..... its just a catchy name for the group..... historically inaccurate.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's, Reverand Horton Heat and lately the Horrorpops. Great music to dance, drive or shoot with! 8)

According to the local paper awhile back the Berrien County Sherrifs Dept. also has a shot gun that is being tested for links to the St. Valentines Day massacre.

That is pretty cool. Went on Valentine's Day a few years back to Chicago for the St. Valentine's Day massacre. Pretty violent history around that area. Would love to rip off a drum in a fully auto Tommy.

Did they mention where the shotgun was acquired? Was it part of the stash found at Fred Burke's place in Stevensville?

CZ,
I think it was part of the Fred Burke stash. I don't remember for sure. Never saw any more about it in the paper, but I don't get the paper anymore. I think it was in the paper in Jan.
