Title: Say it isn't so!
Post by: shooter32 on March 24, 2009, 03:44:33 PM
According to Variety, Joel and Ethan Coen, known collectively as the Coen brothers, plan to put their unique spin on the classic western “True Grit.” Made in 1969, “True Grit” is a favorite of John Wayne fans and western fans alike and is the only film to win Wayne an Oscar.

The Coen brothers will team up again with producer Sott Rudin, who worked with them on the Oscar-winning “No Country for Old Men.” Adapted from Charles Portis’ book of the same name, the brothers promise that their version of “True Grit” will not be a traditional remake and that it will follow the book more closely than the 1969 adaptation. If their past movies (“Miller’s Crossing,” “Blood Simple,” “Fargo”) are any indication, movie-goers can be sure that the Coens will also be taking a much darker and gorier slant on the story.

The 1969 version starred a legendary cast including Wayne, Kim Darby, Jeff Corey, Robert Duvall, and Dennis Hopper. When you look at that cast line-up in print, it’s difficult to imagine how a revamp of the movie (even with the gifted Coen brothers at the helm) can live up to the original. Who can possibly wear an eye patch like John Wayne? Aussie hunk Russell Crowe or pretty-boy-cowboy Hugh Jackman? I don’t think so. Perhaps tough guy Tommy Lee Jones?

DON'T DO IT!! >:(

Bingo! Jones would be ideal, or maybe Michael Chickliss (sic) from the sheild or Edward James Olmos. And even the Duke didn't have a wood chipper or underwear with "Yodas and shit" on it. I'll admit, it will take some big brass ones for any actor to step up and take the Duke's role (I'd suggest Clint, but he's already played that scene in Unforgiven, no need to go there twice). Besides to quote Colonel Potter from MASH it has the makings of a great film in that it has "guns, horses and more guns". 8)

Let's see...
Ginger Cat and Chen Lee, I believe.

And let's not forget the other "actor" getting top billing (just under John Wayne) -- Glen Campbell as the Texas Ranger, "Le Boeuf"!

I've got no problem with remakes - if they're quality productions and not just cheap knock-offs.  I've got room in my heart for both productions of "3:10 to Yuma," to conveniently use a Russell Crowe film as an example.  Both are terrific films.  Glenn Ford and Van Heflin were great in the original, but Crowe and Christian Bale portrayed the same characters in their own unique ways.  No better or worse, just different.  Without remakes, we never would have gotten "The Magnificent Seven" from "The Seven Samurai"!

So a quality remake of True Grit can only compliment the original, never replce it.  Like Shooter said, who can wear an eye patch like John Wayne?  Of course, they wouldn't dare have the character say "Fill your hands you sons of bitches!"  Now that would be treading on sacred ground!

I've thought a few times that Tom Hanks might be able to pull off playing a few old Jimmy Stewart roles.......maybe.

Seconded! If you want an (older) Jimmy Stuart, Sam Waterson of Law and Order might pull it off. As far as Clint, the guy who plays the new Bond (spacing on the name) might stress might do in a pinch, and would be a lot better than Glen Cambel (the weak link)l in the remake of true grit.

Hoot owl Sam Waterston?................and you scoffed at Tom Hanks?     :-X    :-X

At least I was half-way saying it in jest.........with emphasis on the maybe.............Sam Waterston.........damn.    ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

At least Hanks' acting style has been compared to Stewart......I do realize he ain't half the man that Stewart was......

I ain't that big a dumbass........unless my wife's telling the story............"What Honey?....oh nothing....Just typing on the computer to my little friends about.........um.....er....normal stuff.......

Actually, in all seriousness (yes, me, serious) I've never really saw too many remakes that do justice to the original so I don't care much for them.

Three Stooges' coming together at MGM

Nyuk-nyuk-nyuk.

MGM and the Farrelly brothers are finally slapping together their high-profile cast for "The Three Stooges," a comedy project the filmmakers have been developing for years. Sean Penn is set to play Larry, and Jim Carrey is in negotiations to play Curly. Benicio del Toro is a rumored possibility for the brothers' taciturn leader, Moe.

The studio is looking to start production in the fall for a 2010 release slot.

The project was originally set up at Columbia, which produced the 1930s Stooges shorts. C3 Entertainment Inc., which holds the licensing rights to the Stooges brand, then sold the feature rights to Warner Bros. in 2001 for the Farrellys to write and produce the movie. Eventually, Warner Bros. let the rights lapse and MGM's Mary Parent scooped them up along with the Farrellys' continuing participation.

Peter and Bobby Farrelly wrote the script, which Bobby has referenced as "Dumb, Dumber & Dumbest," and will produce with Bradley Thomas and Charlie Wessler. Earl and Robert Benjamin of C3 will executive produce.

The film is not a biopic but a fictional treatment that maintains the Stooges' gleeful slap schtick updated for a modern milieu.

Originally constructed as four separate shorts, the feature screenplay has since been streamlined into a single narrative. Included in the story line is an opening that shows the Stooges as kids in an orphanage, a device that will require some "Benjamin Button"-style visual trickery to place the adult actors' heads on child actors' bodies.

The Stooges maintain remarkably global brand recognition, and their shorts, films and cartoons are still broadcast in 30 countries. The Farrelly brothers' latest comedy "The Heartbreak Kid" grossed $124 million worldwide.

Penn is repped by CAA, Carrey by CAA and the Miller Co.

Oh, good grief..........   :-X  :-X

+10 Selleck would work, I just still have a hard time pictuing him without those Hawian shirts though. Maybe Wilam DeFoe if he's not too old. He was the right kind of badass in platoon. Or, just to jerk the GOPs chain, maybe Martin Sheen. If he was tough enough for Apocalypse Now.......

Remaking a Duke movie should be the same as comitting treason.  It shouldn't be done, THERE IS NO ACTOR IN THIS WORLD that could even imagine filling the Duke's shoes.

The first problem is there maybe five actors in hollywood that love this country and realize that westerns represent the best of who we are as a people, second Duke was bigger than life....there are no actors that have the Dukes presence on screen.

ROFL! That's too good. I think Jerry Falwell might come back from the dead just so he could have another heart attack! Picture it: an all gay cast, Ellen as the avenging daughter, and make it a musical! Costumes by Carson from Queer Eye for the Staight Guy. Consider it revenge from Hollywood for Prop. 8. Oh God, that is just too good! And yes I know I have a sick and twisted sense of humor but I know I'd be first in line to listen the proteters etc. Green MT. you have made my day. ;D ;D

Yes 'out' might be appropriate in this case...??....... but don't the "cowboy" in the pic look uncannily like Leonardo DiCaprio?
