OK, it is official. Not only do I have the forget its but now I have old man eyes, too.
Anybody have a good (cheap but quality) source for prescription shooting/safety glasses?
And they have to fit under earpro AND a motorcycle helmet.
And don't say Oakley M frames, flak jackets, etc. One, then non-mil versions don't fit under my helmet, and, two, they look too much like off-duty (shoot me FIRST).
Mr. Bane mentioned some brand of shooting glasses that worked for sporting clays on a podcast, but I can't find it now (darn forget its). Anybody remember what that brand was or find me the link?

"BTT"......Back to Top
He's looking to bump his post up to the top of the board so someone can respond to his question over the weekend.

Just go buy some safety glasses with side protectors you can put on if you want.
I got a pair with bifocal so I can read, the upper part is just clear/ no prescription.
Polycarbonate is the material.

Thanks CDR. I use readers but not when I'm shooting so it's no problem for me.

I learn something new every day...had to go to the URBAN DICTIONARY for this one...
1. BTT
Bump to Top. BTT simply adds a posting to a forum thread to show activity, thereby moving it to the top of the list of threads in that forum.
For instance, if a discussion thread has been inactive for a week, it can get moved down in the list or onto subsequent pages. Any activity in the thread will move it back to the top of the list.
Posters may just want to do that and will post a BTT.
As for shooting glasses...
I may be wrong but I think he mentioned SUNBUSTERS...

you might want to check out Decot also ... they have been around forever and have added a couple of newer styles to their line.

ESS (Eye Safety Systems) make wonderful and very affordable polycarbonate shooting glasses. I purchased the ICE model from Optics Planet that comes with three different color interchangeable lenses. ESS supplies the US and British Military with shooting glasses and goggles as well as many police and fire departments around the world. They make an option that allows for prescription eyeglass inserts........have a look.

Ya know, let me just get this off my chest. I have pretty bad eyes. It is the old man thingy probably a little further down the road ... I have been going to an Opthamologist for around 25 years. Smart guy, does eye surgery etc. But he has NO CLUE about glasses for a shooter. So depending on how your current prescription is working you might want to read the following from an Optometrist and shooter.
http://www.newportrifleclub.org/shooting_prescription.html
I don't understand half of it. BUT it clearly makes the point that a shooter needs to be handled a bit different than the average joe looking for driving glasses or to read the newspaper. I finally found an Optometrist who specializes in sports. So look around and make sure you get the RIGHT prescription for the TYPE OF SHOOTING you do. You may just wind up with a specific pair of glasses for the range.

Cool reference, 1776!
-
Thanks Rebel. I have been trying to explain this to my Optometrist for quite a while.
Mac.

US Safety glasses have so many to offer, I still use the safety lens for my regular glasses.
-
Thanks for that link, Rebel. That helps me for what questions to ask.
I think I have come to the conclusion that I am going to need multiple pairs. I think I will end up with ESS or Revisions for shooting and working and something a little lower profile for streetwear.

I had my safety glasses for the shop made with progressive lenses so that I can read, use my desktop in the office and see the front site on my 1911 clearly at arms length. I can't see very well at distance with them but that isn't what I needed them for anyway. They ain't too pretty, LensCrafters Model No.: "Geek" (without the masking tape) ;D
When I'm shooting trap or sporting clays, I just use a pair of shooting glasses with no extra magnification because I can still see very clearly at distance.
As I get older, I'm sure things will change. I didn't need classes at all until about age 45.

Here's a page you may want to check out - prescription lens inserts behind the shooting lenses, not too terribly expensive.

Yikes! Fixed, thanks
Also, google ESS ICE for more reviews and sellers. For example, Cops Plus has the three lens system for $41-42. Prescription insert is $27 there.

I resurrected this thread because I ran across some new info that might be useful to folks. I had posted earlier a link to an article
that an Optometrist had put together on shooting and eye exams. Today I wanted to review that paper and googled the Dr's name...well another shooter has put together on one website quite a number of this optometrists articles. It looks like a really good resource to tuck away for reference or to pass along to your eye doctor....

I use cheaters for reading or close up ogling. I use standard shooting glasses with add on cheater lenses. get em wet and they adhere to the glasses. Instant bifocals.
