In the old days, we just hit them with 12g or a .44, now it's more "sporting'.

In Texas you can do all of those, and yes you need a stamp for your hunting license, so they can keep track of how many are being harvested and tax you for it.

Thats now. This was then. Gators were fairley strictly protected from I want to say the fifties through the nineties beause they were considered a threatend species. This was particularly true if Great Great Uncle Burt was around. It didn't stop the poaching for the hide trade though and lots of good old boys who were profesional fishrmen in the Glades would supplement their income doing this. Later it was running weed. Earlier booze. Uncle Burt started running guns to the IRA in the early twenties and bringing whiskey back. As he said he never made much money but never got bored, and the only time he got popped was Out Bound in the Bahamas with a load shot guns in '22. How many Florida smugglers can say they got arrested on their way off shore? :) The old man was hard core, unreconstructed as hell and definately original gangster. Awww YEAHHH biatch!

I don't think all ten thousand million billion of them are protected now at all, every river I've fished and coast I've hunted has been overrun in places.  Besides Florida's got enough for us to kill all our gators. ;D

Threatened? Hell man they aren't even sternly warned these days. Its kind of ironic really beause so many of our smaller species are having a hard time because of over development, loss of habitat and our screwed up flood control sytem hurting the estuaries. Despite this the alpha predator thrives. It, at least, thanks the Yankees for all the golf course water hazards and tasty poodles. :-\
FQ13 Who still thinks anyone who says it tastes like chicken can't tell the difference between chicken and seagull.  :P

I only had gator once and I thought it tasted like frog's legs. It was hard to tell what it really tasted like because of the Cajun seasoning.
