"US Marine Corps Sgt. James Lowery was at the drive-in window of a McDonalds in Gardendale, Alabama, while home on leave. “That’s when a man with a .38-cal. handgun ordered him out of his customized Chevy suburban. Lowery complied and got out of his SUV, but the man then shot the Marine in the face. Lowery reached back into his vehicle, drew a .45-cal. pistol and shot his assailant several times. The robber, Thaddeus Antone, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lowery was listed in fair condition at a local hospital.” (Birmingham News, 12/19/02.)"
"Note that the Marine’s .45 decisively ended the encounter in his favor. Note that the man shot in the face with a .38 responded by killing the man who shot him, and that two criminals shot with 9mms were able to perform considerable physical activity before collapsing of their wounds"

Badgersmilk. There is more to that mag than I expected. If Massad Ayoob is contributing articles than I am in hands down. Like how it discusses on how to live off the land. Right up my alley. Now if I could just hit the lottery and get the hell out of the city. :)

I thought you were talking about living off the land. All you need is a knife and some rope right?

BM, I misunderstood the tone of your post, I thought you were trying to pass yourself off as a Marine. My mistake and I apologize.
-
Hey Tom, you must be a Marine?
-
Semper Fi !! there are several on here. ;D

Not just Marines though. This we'll defend.

Lot of them too ;D

I'm cool with everyone saying I'm 16! ;D Makes me feel younger hearing it!!! ;D Thanks!
Since we're on the topic, anyone ever take a close look at how different the training and tactics are between Marines and Army? Pretty surprising!
It's easy to pick a preferance on which would keep you alive longest! Your leaders may feel your expendable, but dead soldiers dont get much done. :(
I'm just surprised how different the approaches are when placed in the same scenario's. Multiplied when you look at their special forces.
A very good friend of mine was in the interview session at the end of "blackhawk down". Seeing that and talking to him, he'll tell you ALL about the problems that happen when you combine the forces! That "put his life at risk more than anything."
Both tactics work. They sure dont mix!
-
Oh yeah. NO, I was never a Marine. Didnt mean to mislead. Just thought is was cool that Marine got shot in the face and killed the guy that was trying to rob him! ;D
Backwoods Home is an awsome magazine. Look up some of the other articles on there!
And again, if you ever have to use a mouse gun to defend yourself... EMPTY IT!

As I said, it was MY misunderstanding.
As for "Black hawk down" / the battle of Mogadishu, The faults lie at a much higher level than training, The very Mission was flawed by personal prejudices of the UN leadership. The Marines who served there prior to UN involvement had no where NEAR the problems incited by the UN.
Commenting on differences between Army training and Marine training, (I also spent a few years in the Guard) The mind set is different.
The Army has traditionally trained and geared itself for large scale conventional warfare against more or less equivalent conventional / State armies, whether that means Washington's Regiments against Cornwallis' regiments,
Patton's divisions against the German divisions, or NATO standing against the threat of a Warsaw Pact invasion of Europe.
The Marines by contrast have always been geared to smaller units and more short term operations. The Famous "Shores of Tripoli" operation against the Barbary Pirates was carried out by 6 Marines, (And about 500 mercenaries and tribesmen under Command of the former Consul to Tunis, William Eaton).
Another example of the differences comes from WWII, In Europe the Normandy Invasion involved over a million Troops and was measured in months (11) from landing to Surrender, by contrast the largest Marine Corps operation of WWII, the landing on Okinawa, involved 1/5 that number of troops and lasted 82 days.
