Title: Glock Recommendation
Post by: johnkorz on April 13, 2009, 04:46:55 PM
Hello Everyone:

Can someone provide a recommendation for a Glock full size pistol?   I will appreciate all recommendations from the experts on this forum.  Thanks John

One thing that is helping me short out the Glock models is the Glock 2009 Annual magazine - got mine from a friend but they are on the racks or can order I think. Seeing all the models in one place is helping me narrow down the choices according to how I think I'll use it. Good luck - I'll be watching both our posts.

My primary recommendation would be ,that for the time being, to stay with the 3 most common calibers (9mm, .40, .45 acp). It is usually best to stick with the ammo selections that you are most likely to be able to find. This would be true for other gun makes as well.

There are probably enough 10mm and .357sig pistols out there, that you'll be able to find some ammo for them. There won't be as many choices in ammo and it will be more expensive. Also holds true for all gun makes.

The 40, may be a little snappier to shoot for some that aren't familiar with it. The 45 will carry a few less rounds, but probably carries enough to get the job done. Te 9mm will have the least expensive ammo on the market. It's really a preference thing.

Many of the midsize Glocks do the job of a full-size pretty well. In addition to a full 22, I shoot a 23 and 19 and actually prefer them.

Go to a range where you can rent a GLOCK and shoot all the standard (full size) models, G17 (9mm), G22 (.40) G21 (.45), G31 (.357), G20 (10mm). Which ever one you shoot the best is the one to buy.

Excellent recommendation!  If you are looking for a Glock for competition shooting, try shooting the Glock 34/35 (9mm/.40 S&W), too.

I note that you didn't add any Glocks in 45 GAP. I wouldn't have been surprised if Glock had omitted it from the annual too. I'm glad that we have so many choices, but it seems like a funny time for proprietary rounds right now. I guess the GAP allows people with smaller hands to throw bigger bullets.

I vote for Steyr but that is just me.
If I had to do it all over again. Either a FN or XD would be my choice. So many accessories. Sig's are nice but very big for CCW and HK are $$$.

Sigs are definitely not too big for CC:

What, nobody trying to steer him toward the S&W M&P?

Rent guns, shoot friends guns and make your decision from there.

P.S. the koolaids to sweet :P

Glock 22 40S&W is a good choice all around. For ccw the G26 fits and a G19 is perfect for all things in between. I personally like the G20 10mm over the 45acp.

Not a lot of info to go buy.  You can compete and have fun with just about any Glock except the .380!  Decide what type of competition you want to get into and go from there (Glock Shooting Sports -I believe-, USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challange or whatever).

I saw a report on CBS the other night, where they said that Glock is 18 months behind on production, so it may come down to what your dealer still has. One of the local gun stores here told me that they weren't getting any until 2010.

I ordered a G17 in January. Took eight weeks to get it.

My son has the Glock 30 SF (Short Frame) which is .45ACP. Holds ten in magazine. Nice gun. Don't think you can go wrong with whatever you choose.

I carry a Sig P239 in .40 S&W with Crimson Trace grips.

I like my G27...but I wish I'd have bought the G30 instead....nothing wrong with the .40, but looking at things now, I would rather have the .45.

And yet you could have had mine in three days. ;D Seriously, they are a great gun, not a target pistol (unless you shoot practical matches) but they shoot minute of bad guy, go bang every damn time, and don't require a lot maintance or any after market upgrades. What you see is what you get. Point and click, works for me. I vote for either the 9mm or .45 as I don't see anything in the .40 that makes it worth the extra $5 a box of ammo. As far as the.45 abortion, I mean GAP, or Sig .357, do you really want to own a pistol that you can't be sure you'll find ammo for? They might be great in theory, but with a 9mm or .45 you'll always have a loaded mag.

Give it to M'lette and let her hold it. Beyond that I am clueless. ;D

I would never regret the G27 -the most power to weight/size ratio in the bunch.   It can be very controllable with practice, and will always conceal easier than the G30.  The 30 is a little easier to shoot with hot loads.  The only real solution is to have both!

Lets see, a picture of the lovely M'lette holding a glock on the one hand, OR a picture of an antiquated rust bucket taped to a "perfectly" good MODERN firearm on the other hand. Peg, you need to leave the farm more often. ;D
