Title: Drinking question for Marshal
Post by: MikeBjerum on April 21, 2009, 12:44:17 PM
Anyone can help with this ... and the answer is not Hazarita!

Got the following e-mail from our daughter this morning.  I answered Aquavit, but told her I would go to the drunks experts for verification:

Hi, Dad—

I had a customer ask about a clear drink that Norwegians drink.  Do you have any idea what it is?  Apparently it’s a shooter and they sing a sailor song at the same time.

Doesn't it just warm your heart when the little girl calls with drinking questions  ::)

Your probably right but it's spelled Akevitt (I think) in Norway....

Never had it personally, was too young the last time I saw my relatives in WI and MN...

It’s common to accompany the Christmas meal with a shot glass of akevitt, a spirit distilled from potatoes with around 40% alcohol content. The name literally meaning water of life, which demonstrates the high regard that Norwegians have for it.

so says google ;D

If it's anything like Icelandic "Brenavin", it's probably pretty nasty!  I think the Icelanders make it out fermented cod butts or something.... :P

Brennivín is similar to Scandinavian Akvavit, especially the Danish variety, called brændevin. In Swedish it is called brännvin, and in Norwegian brennevin. The steeping of herbs in alcohol to create Schnapps is a long-held folk tradition in all Scandinavian countries.

I knew it, nasty stuff.....in Iceland they drink this swill to wash down putrified shark.....it will grow hair on a cue ball...

"The name literally meaning water of life, which demonstrates the high regard that Norwegians have for it."

It is interesting how water of life turns up as the name of so many drinks, uisce beatha (Irish for whiskey), and I was told okowita (Polish, for vodka I think but I might be remembering wrong).  I knew a few others, but of course now that I'm trying to remember them I can't.
