In an economic environment that is hitting the college endowments pretty hard guess what teams are getting dropped? Well shooting of course. MIT in Mass. has one of the best and most active college pistol teams in the nation believe it or not. So the powers that be are dropping the pistol team from varsity. That is a big loss.

To Save Money, M.I.T. Drops 8 Sports Teams
By CATE DOTY
High school students with dreams of competing in alpine skiing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, beware: when this academic year ends, the institute will no longer have a varsity team.
That squad and seven others — competitive pistol, golf, wrestling, and men and women’s ice hockey and gymnastics — were eliminated on Thursday by M.I.T.’s athletics department, citing the need to trim $1.5 million from its budget.
The announcement ended several weeks of meetings and student hand-wringing over which of M.I.T.’s 41 Division III varsity teams would be cut. Being an innovative lot, M.I.T. students looked for ways to save programs, including fund-raising and protests. Some disgruntled students even kidnapped Tim the Beaver, the institute’s mascot, demanding that all 41 teams be kept. (The student playing Tim was released unharmed, although the costume’s head eventually ended up on the John Harvard statue in Harvard Yard.)
“These programs contribute to our ever-precious admissions yield, which in turn contributes to our esteemed public perception and high national ranking,” Ethan Solomon, a second-year student, wrote in an opinion article for The Tech, M.I.T.’s student newspaper. “Indirectly, these factors may influence alumni donation rates, which further influence our national ranking.”
The institute said, however, that even in flush times, the 41 teams weighed heavily on the department, and that the cuts were intended to strengthen the remaining 33 squads.
Some of the eliminated programs, like the pistol team, may become club sports, said Will Hart, the pistol coach.
“We’ve been a varsity club since 1937, so this is something entirely new for us,” Mr. Hart said of the pistol program, one of the top-ranked in the country and one of the institute’s most popular physical education classes.
“M.I.T. has a certain culture,” he added. “The students need release. I hope they find something else that was as close to enjoyable as their sport was.”[/b]

They cut it for "economic reasons".... Yeah right! You never want to waste a good crisis, do ya?
-
They had a pistol team...
I recently read a artical about people that gruadated from MIT and the econ. 60% of the gradutes could not find employment 6 months after they got out of school.
-
I'm surprised they had one to begin with. After all, the first word in MIT is Massachusetts.
-
What's next, Harvard cutting Legal Debate Teams?
We'll see...

NEVER ! But the rowing team may get the axe.

rowing is not a sport... its what happends when your motor brakes. ;D
-
If a team like MIT which produces national and international champions can be cut, all bets are off. I am sure that Scholastic Clays etc will all feel the pressure. No farm team no champions. No student interest now, no 2A supporters within the next generation.

no 2A supporters within the next generation.
My kid is our hope....and remember, there are 900,000 licensed gun owners in MA, nearly 20 percent of the populous. As Tom stated before, the eastern 1/4 of the state is communist, the rest of the state is pretty conservative! Our biggest problem is the 2 million communists in and around Boston rule!

sounds alot like CA... 90% of the land mass is conservative, if it was not for LA and the bay area this would be a very conservative state.

CA is nothing like MA....for one you have 39 million people to our 6 mil. CA can reverse the course of an election cycle, MA cannot!
Having lived in both states for an extended period, I would prefer NOT to live in either!!!!!

Where's that big earth quake at?

what we really need to do is split the state, have a nor cal and a so cal.(the bay area can go with so cal) Sadly it will never pass as so cal gets most of thier water from nor cal.

I still don't buy your math TAB. On your assumption of 90% conservative, 10% liberal you would only need about 3.9 million plus one other vote to give the 55 electoral votes to the conservative. That has not happened since Reagan won 49 of 50 states against Mondale, a complete ass whupping.
No, there are too many hippies growing hemp in the north now, I know, I lived in Humbolt county for two years. You could not go into the mountains without walking through a field of pot. No biggie, I don't care one way or another on the matter.
The point is, that because it's a race to call an election, the poles close all over the country at different times and Californians resign themselves that they can't do much to stop the process so they don't vote. Split the state? It's never going to happen, it's not about politics, your right, it's about the water! Apathy is what's taken your state into the shithouse, a few million dopers, actors and homosexuals control the mob out there. The gold panned out in the late 1800's, what's left is the stinking pile of tailings contaminating the groundwater....
Other than that, it's a lovely place to visit! ;D

Dog gone ! TAB put up 2 posts in a row I agree with ???

Tim is right too, it's that way in most, if not all states. The urban areas are dependent on Welfare, Govt. money and the other crumbs of "machine politics, such as patronage jobs (big in Mass) They just expect the rest of the state to pay for it.
When the time for Civil war comes it will not be region against region like the last one, it will be either the Rural population "Fumigating the cities or (more likely) a sudden rush to flee collapsing cities being met by resistance.

At one point a few years ago, one of the coaches for their team was a student of mine... I had tried to work out a "guest lecturer" opportunity at M.I.T. for the team, but lost track of it.... guess it won't ever happen now!

You are missing the point that legislative districts are set by population, cities get more than rural areas and cities are controlled by political machines, it may be before your time, but that was why Boston completely controled Mass politics until the time of Senate President Billy Bulger in the 90's. ( Yes, He 's related to Whitey, they are brothers)
-
I know Tom but my point was I don't believe that 90% of CA population is conservative, not even close...
I moved up here in 96, Bulger was then the President of UMass...seemed like a bit of a putz, I know he managed quite a nice retirement out of both his dealings on Beacon Hill and with the university...
Didn't know he was Senate chair but his famous brother Whitey has made problems for Billy. Seems that Billy may have had contact with Whitey while UMass boss.. Like most things Bostonian, it get's buried in the paper that no one reads anyway.
I've not read a newspaper in twenty years, maybe thirty!

What TAB said, Area, not population.
OFF TOPIC I just got done reading Howie Carr's book, "The Brothers Bulger",(again ) I read "Black Mass" years ago. Surprisingly Whitey DID NOT make most of Billy's problems, beyond the one phone call that he was questioned about in Congressional hearings, (even though Flemmie, Connoly and several others testified that Billy often saw Whitey at Sunday dinners where the FBI agents and gangsters got together.
The majority of Billies problems came from, the socialist elements taking advantage of the fact that he was an old time "politician" engaging in patronage and shady business deals. It's true that taxes in Mass went through the roof while the crooks were running things but they have only gone even higher under the socialists, and at least the crooks had the decency not to try to convince you that it was a GOOD thing.
OK, back to the topic ;D

Area is meaningless as population is the only part of the equation that matters. Why exactly, does CA have over 20% of the electoral votes necessary for a presidential election majority, when they only represent 13% of the American population?
Politics! ..the system is still phuqued up beyond all recognition.
I will never agree that CA is conservative any more than I would think that of NY, MA, CT, RI, ME, VT or even sometimes NH.
Until such time as the media decides to keep their mouths shut until CA polls close at 11:00 EST, will we have a fair and balanced electoral cycle. We've seen it happen time and time again. More and more of the media outlets would have Edward R. Morrow rolling over in his grave. Journalism is dead and gone in this country, truth is dying slowly and the commies that I chased 30 years ago are running the show.....!!
-
CA is a winner take all state. it does not matter if you win with one vote or 10 mil. you still get all the electoral votes.
we also have the most house members.
If you break down votes by countys and districts, you will see that most of the "blue" are in urban areas, where as most of the "red" are in the burbs and rual areas.
Its alot worse then that, for primays, if you don't vote for your party, its not counted. I'm not joking, if you are DEM and vote for a GOP it will not be counted. If your like me and a indy, it will only be counted if you vote for a DEM. If your a lib, it will only be counted if you vote GOP.
its very fucked up. The sad part is most of this stuff has been voted into place... just look at the last election, we are broke, yet just about every single bill tat would cost us money, pasted. I'm not sure if people don't care, or don't know.
How the DEM took over CA was back in the 70s, they ran on th e"uninon" for state employees platform... it fucked us as a state.

Better than that, Tim. The polls should open at the SAME TIME all across the US and close at the SAME TIME 24 hours later.
eg open 9am in the east and noon in the west the 24 hours later close. That way it all starts and stops at the same moment. Any early reposting of surveys or polls should be illegal!
-
Never mind, my math is wrong.....CA gets 55 votes of 538.....my bad....roughly 10%...
:-[
-
we have about 10% of the population, which is what electorail votes are based on.

I agree!!!
And if the press screams First Amendment, I'd point out voter tampering. It has been proven (I don't have my college notes and books here for reference) that posting of results and exit polls from one region affects voter turnout and voting in other regions. I remember once back in the 80's when they tried to ban all early reporting that they talked of if the west coast heard the electoral votes were all there for a winner that voters quit going to the polls.
