Title: What do you think about this flu stuff?
Post by: Teresa Heilevang on April 29, 2009, 08:14:54 PM
I am listening to all of the news and am starting to get a little ansy. In case you didn't already catch it, we are at a level 5, which means a pandemic is eminent. Ya might want to get masks right quick if you don't have any. It's airborne.
It sounds like we're headed for something the likes of which we haven't seen in my lifetime.  I hope I'm wrong...But O was on the tube, discussing it just now...That's not a good sign.  I heard that the national news was saying that it would be a good idea to have a 10-day supply of food on hand, (which isn't a problem for me)  in the event that public venues were shut down.  What has anyone else heard?

Mrs. Gringo and I canceled our Cancun vacation.   :(  We were set to fly out on the 15th of May but yesterday made the decision that it was probably the worst time to go to there.  Even if we didn't get sick, the possibility of a very difficult flight and getting safely back outweighed the disappointment.

Besides it's been 90 degrees in New England lately.

Personally Teresa, I think it's getting blown way out of proportion.  It wouldn't hurt to be prepared which you already are but on the bright side, Howard, KS is far enough away from a large metro area that you should be fine.

I live 50 miles from Boston, 30 miles from Providence, 15 miles from Worcester and 60 miles from Hartord and Springfield.  I'm staying away from large shoping areas and keeping to my self for the most part.  I work in an office of four men with nearly 1200 sq ft and sanitize everything every morning and if I leave for lunch, just a precation for me because I have so much metal in my body from my accident.

I wash my hands or use a towlet constantly, but I do that anyway....

Hang in there young lady, you've got that strapping man to look after ya... ;)

Well..... Its the flu.... and TamiFlu clears it right up.

Like I posted in the other thread.... Regular flu kills 36,000 Americans each year, and thousands since January
http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/28/regular.flu/index.html

So far 1 has died in the US from Swine Flu. Yes, you might want to hide your kids and elderly, but right now it is far from a pandemic..... It really makes me wonder if this is some kind of big diversion or if they are trying to use this to make a play on something.

As with "most" "world" organizations, (like the UN, NATO,) I have reservations to the overall validity of their "opinion". Re: World Health Organization.

91 cases in the United States out of 300+million, is a statistical nothing.

PLUS, most of the cases here in the U.S. are recovering. The 8 kids in the school in NY, are all going to survive. The 23month old child came across the border sick and than died. (Not really an American fatality yet,..)

This "bug" responds to Tamiflu and Relenza which, in otherwise healthy people, is treatable.

Can it get worse? Sure, I won't doubt that, although the flu season is waning with the approach of summer. I did hear from a talking head that it may come back this fall/winter if not tamped down now.

We prepare, stay in touch, and I guess hand sanitizers will become more popular. All good advice.

I am hoping for the best.

50,000,000 doses of Tamiflu stocked up..let's see, after first responders, fire, police and medical that should get a dose first along with their family that leaves enough for...oh yeah, the politicians and their families.

Like I said in an earlier post...we'll have a really good idea on Friday or Saturday..depending on how long it takes to get the information tabulated and pushed out the door.

Not only does alcohol kill most everything, I bet no virus can survive in some of those smokey casionos. ;D

Seriously though, i tend to lean to the side that we are over reacting.  However, the Fort Worth ISD (80,000 students) announced they are shutting down all campuses until May 8.  Geez!!!

I would like to go ahead reserve the right to dish out some vigorous joke cracking if our dear, sweet, princess M'ette comes down with any illness that happens to have the word "Swine" in the name. ;)

The only reason there were so many deaths in Mexico is because it is such a s***hole. Now they have all those deaths they can blame on the illegal American guns coming over the border and pass an assault weapons ban.
It's the flu.

People here are starting to freak out, even though there hasn't been any confirmed cases here.
I live in an agricultural area.....its almost plantin' time. Most of the laborers do come from down south, so I can see their point..... A little....I think the flu is the flu and I hope my flu shot has me covered!  lol

I've read reports the last couple days that compare this to other outbreaks over the last couple decades.  Same hype, same fears and not as bad as predicted.  However, our society is becoming wackier and wackier, so more people panic today than last time.

All this said, it is still a good reason to be prepared.  And, it is a good time to make sure you get your rest, take your vitamins, eat well and get your regular exercise.  Precautions like hand washing, and watching your travels aren't a bad idea either.

The funny thing is that our fearless leader and friends were just down there right before the breakout. Things that make you go hrmmm...

I got vaccinated for the Swine Flu in 1976.
I'm not worried about getting it. ;D

People get sick, and people die, welcome to the real world.  The couple of hundred deaths in the last week don't compare to other means of death, car accidents, cancer, suicides.  So I say, so what if ten thousand people drop dead tomorrow, and the next day, and the next?  Its going to take along time to kill 300 million people.  Just add this on to one of thousands of ways to die and move on with your life.

What's funny is, I went to Wal Mart earlier and the cashier and other employees had on gloves and everything, as though that'll stop an pathogen from spreading.  I'd bet money that none of them have the discipline not to let those gloves contact their faces or clothes.  But hey, what ever makes you fell better about death.

They closed a elementry school (private) about 4 miles from my house, one of the kids got sick over spring break... guess where he went?     Mexico.( I know shocker)

we need to shut the boarder down( ok so we need to do that anyways)

On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm worried about a -5 about this.

As far as I can see, this is just another reminder to "be prepared". I think that no matter what goes down, those that are prepared (and capable) to be self sufficient, are going to make it. Those who think that the government will take care of them may as well give it up right now.

I would think that the lessons learned about crisis management by the Feds would have stuck with the people after Katrina. But then again, I kinda thought we might remember what happened on 9-11 for far longer than we have. Thankfully we shelled out 300,000 bucks and reminded ourselves how scary that day was with this B.S. photo op... >:(
