Title: Time for more consolidation...
Post by: garand4life on May 03, 2009, 12:07:50 PM
Seriously considering trading in my LCP on a Remington 870 tactical with the full stock and pistol grip as well as 7rnd capacity and parkarized finish. With .380 being unavailable and 12 gauge being readily available i am considering consolidating down and ditching .380 all together. I still have my G22 and M&P40, my 1911 M&P15 and m1. Any thoughts... I seldom carry the LCP since for me its just as easy to carry a full size.

Sounds good. If you like the pistol grip on the shotgun that's cool. If you listen to Ayoob's podcasts on shotgun stocks he recommends staying away from the pistol grip/full stock version as it traps that hand into the stock and prevents it from turning if you end up in a wrestling match for the gun. He says that the pistol grip stocks are easier for the opponent to wrestle away from you than the monte carlo stock. That is of course, if they get that close to you...

I shoot AR15s alot and find it more controllable personally. But I would agree with Mass on most things. In this instance I feel my chance of losing the weapon is about equal with the shotgun as the AR. And correct me if I'm wrong the 870 tends to have more options for modification than the Mossberg 500 (what I currently use).

If you currently use the Moss. 500 I would stick with it as you are already familiar with the location of the controls. As for accessories;

Considering the market now, selling the LCP would be a savvy move. I am of the same mind about guns: if I am not shooting them or carrying them, why have them? I'm not saying that is for everyone, it's just that I am a utilitarian by nature. Good luck!

Don't recall if I picked up this Ayoob podcast link on this forum or somewhere else, but it is a great one. There is a short 2 minute video and just below it are TWO AUDIO links. Mas and crew talk for nearly 2 hours on shotguns. After listening to it I went out and bought a short barrel for my 870.

Additionally finding #4 Buck 2 3/4 inch shells is like looking for hens teeth. Natchez had them in stock and I ordered a bunch of Remingtons at a pretty good price (3.98 a box)...

Go for it.  I'm not too fond of the pistol grip that's stock on Remingtons.  If you wanted one I'd go with an AR type, that way you can have your collapsable stock so you can square up.  And I've been looking at the 870 gear from Mesa Tactical, they look pretty solid.

I held this gun at the store I am going to by it from and absolutely love the feel. The big reason I want to go to Remington versus another Mossberg that would have familiar controls is because too many Mossbergs can not have hicap mag tubes put on them. Remington though... Well we know how Remington is.

Don't do it!. Think about it. How many posts have you read from people regretting trading/selling vs. the "I am sure am glad I got rid of that one."  It's at least three to one.

Remingtons/Mossbergs/Daly's, whatever, they are still reasonable in price.

Yes .380 is scarce. BUT it was never designed for Home Defense (not really), it was designed for on the street concealed carry.

You can oil it up and make it a safe queen until this ammo thing works out, or continue to carry it. (BTW do you have a CCW?)

Anyway, put the Rem. on layaway, half now half later, whatever. But keep the LCP.

Its very hard to conceal a Remington in street clothes.

Just my .02 cents garand4life, You do what you think is best. I just have lost firearms in a pinch that I wish I had back.

The LCP is a good little gun. Moreover, the Remington 870 is one of the foundations in the 12g world, as I'm sure your well aware.

Try to keep it if you can.

P.S. I have the Kel-Tec P3AT and a Remington 870 with ATI stock. Remington for those SHTF situations at home, and the Kel-Tec, to get me out of those SHTF situations on the street.

Daily I carry, I do have a CCW, but I seldom if ever carry the LCP. Probably because I am use to carrying my .40's or my 1911. Correct you can't conceal an 870 but thats what .45's are for. My Mossberg is fun but I have been eyeing this 870 for a while. http://www.impactguns.com/store/media/rem/rem_6431.jpg
This is almost identical... But hey if you don't shoot it or carry it then why have it?

Don't be offended by that comment, as he said he is a "utilitarian". there are those who believe that if you can't fit it all into one pack you don't need it.  (All that other stuff we just want  ;D  )

Your right.  You bought the LCP, and now don't carry it or use it. Ammo is scarce and off the hook expensive, I can certainly understand.

I have a Ruger in .45LC I don't shoot much at all. Ammo prices make it "not practical" . It's big, tough/impossible in south florida to conceal, a revolver that was modeled from a different time, I have ammo for it but other than that, its not my "GOTO" gun.  I still will never sell it. The Winchester Silvertips are for the Werewolves..... ::) My M+P .40, 1911's, EAA Witness, FN9, I totally understand.

Either way. It sounds like a great trade for the Remington. If times were different, and ammo a plenty: who knows....My damn Walther PPK/S is back in Maine for the recall,.... :-\ I carry my Kel-Tec 90% more due to the weight of the Walther, but I like the damn thing so I'm keeping it. My 14 year old son and future grandchildren can figure it out one day..(Grampa had what?)

Get the 870, they are without question on the short list for best 12g. ever made.

Good call, and good shooting.

Garand4life, I think you are doing the right thing. I am trying myself to upgrade everything to .40 or .45. The .380 LCP is selling like hotcakes. I paid $400 for my Ruger LCP and it was used!!! Can't give mine up cause it belongs to the wife. Otherwise I would be freed up to get rid of several firearms in the 9mm category.

I forgot to mention I already have a couple of shotguns, Remington 870's in 20 and 12 gauge. I would never part from them... ;D

I have a hard time getting rid of anything, most of my purchases were with a specific purpose in mind or firearms that were passed down and have sentimental value. (And I keep telling myself that they are an investment and will only gain in value)

I can understand trying to consolidate calibers but I want to have at least one of something in the major calibers.  What is in short supply today may not be later and vice versa.

Plain and simple... I have 2 good .40s and a good .45. My shotgun is not to the level I consider good for a shotgun. It's good for trap and bird hunting but I don't shoot clay or hunt, what I do need is a rock solid defensive shotgun. My LCP is nice for the rare occasion I need something small. Note those occasions are rare for me. I can do well with full size handguns. I never carried the LCP like I planned. So to me it's this simple... I need a rock solid shotgun, i have a pistol I never carry and a shotgun that is good but could be better. Here is a remedy for that.

Went to take another look at the Remington today. Apparently the price went up a good bit so I asked to see a few of the new arrivals, one of which was a Mossberg 590A1 with ghostring sights and the 20" barrel as well as 9 shot capacity. After thinking on it a bit I decided to go with the Mossberg compromising on the pistol grip full stock and gaining the "real sights" and more familiar controls. So to all of you who were kind enough to offer words of wisdom thank you.

Let us know how you like the rear sight.  How would it work on a fast acquisition/moving target.

Just curious..

Congratulations,.... Great shotgun!
