Hey all,
need some advice on the best way to locate self defense traing in my local area. Both with and with out the use of firearms.
I checked the yellow pages and google with no luck. I'm in the middle of rural Iowa, town of about 50,0000, otherwise not many major cities around here. :(
thanks for the help.

First, welcome to the forum Greg.
I am not sure how close these people are http://www.fiercetraining.org, perhaps it might be what you are looking for. Of course you could always go a little further and go to USSA http://www.usshootingacademy.com/, and maybe get to take a class with Erik. :)

Wow, talk about smack dab in middle America.
I'm not familiar with any high profile schools near you. You'll probably have to travel to attend some good training schools. I would also keep an eye out on the Training section of AR-15.com There are several high profile instructors that travel around the Country. They might be coming to a location near you.
Oh yeah, shameless plug time....
Come train with me at USSA (www.usshootingacademy.com) ;D
Seriously, if you want some opinions on any potential training schools or travelling instructors, send me a PM and we can talk about it.

thanks for the replies,
I would think that to begin with just a basic class in self defense to start with would be best. something I could get myself, wife, and daughters into. just not sure where to go to find any local classes in my area.
nothing in the yellow pages. closest I can come up with is a couple of martial arts schools.

Town of 50,000 Huh.. that isn't a town... That is a metro area in Iowa. I'm currently in a 3,000ish town, but I'm from a 600 person town prior to 3 months ago. Sorry I don't have any training ideas for you though.. Good thing for me is I still get to train with the LEO agency that I use to work for.

Greg,
You did not really say what you are lookig for or who will attened.
"Self defense" covers a HUGE area. Give us more to work with.
And WELCOME to the forum!

OUCH.. Sorry about your loss. Familiar with that area.. My company use to dispatch for East Central REC so that was an easy look up on the map on the wall. If you ever make it down to D-Port.. Bring your CCW and call me for a drink! Welcome to the forum! I haven't been on here long just cause I didn't know it existed until I was looking up "The Best Defense" on the internet and came across the site.

that is a good question,
probably should start at the beginning. Self defense without a gun for myself, wife, and adult daughters. assume we have had no training at all. Most likely training for outside of the home. Once we cover that, then can look at the different weapons courses.
does that help narrow it down?

Here are some boxing gyms http://www.boxinggyms.com/addresses/iowa.htm
Not sure how far this is http://www.iowabjj.com/

NRA has to have some type of regional person you can contact.. At least to get list of regional classes, events or options.
Perhaps local gun clubs, shooting ranges, even gun stores could provide something. Scout the IDPA, and other websites for your area, and send out an email to the local rep, could lead to something.
Welcome to the forum.

krav maga is the most common and one of the best for "unarmed"( and even some armed) SD training.

I think it depends on whether you want a long term exposure (like martial arts) or something that get's you there aka "The Best Defense". USSA has courses (hop over to their website and look at classes and give them a call...you never know, Phil Strader or Erik might pick up) just for women. You might want to take a family vacation to Tulsa and spend few days or a week at USSA.....you can get the women only classes, family awareness classes, etc. I can see three days for the awareness and womens avoidance classes. Or, start with, say one day in intro to handguns, one day in intro to rifles, then they can have the awareness and avoidance classes that can be with or without weapons, whilst might take tac pistol, tac rifle, CQT, etc...
This will give them a huge advantage over their peers and make them far more safe.

I am actually teaching in Iowa this weekend... These guys are pretty serious about practgical training with pistols and have an active club in Waterloo... but they are saying that there isn't anyone doing anything practical around this area.... You might check with the PDR people through Blauer Tactical's website.
When you're ready for some pistol stuff, we'll be back in Iowa this fall and next spring.
