Title: Pick One
Post by: garand4life on May 10, 2009, 06:55:50 PM
Thanks to AT&T unionizing my location (SARCASM IMPLIED), we are getting a contract signing bonus. Seeing as how I'm stuck with the union either way I figure I'll stick it to our anti-gun management and anti-gun union reps (basically all at&t management and union people here) and buy, you guessed it, another gun! I'm looking at a choice between a few Remington 700's. Here are the choices and descriptions. Note: I don't want to add calibers if I can help it but if you think the investment would be worth it please give me some reason behind your thoughts.
1) Remington 700 in 30-06, black synthetic stock with Dale #8, apparently a special tribute edition, I do intend to cover that up if I get it. I have plenty of 30-06 thanks to CMP being down the highway and I prefer easy to find (HAHA) calibers. No optic on this one for about $500
2) Remington 700 in .270 WIN with 3x9 power scope and bipod in synthetic, I don't have any .270 do I would be adding a caliber.
about $700 all said and done
3) Remington 700 in .223, same as #2 and I do have plenty of .223 no bipod and about $600

Please give guidance

And we have a winner. 30-06, when you have to reach out and touch someone   --  and make a hell of a lot of noise doing it!   ;D

And then use the price difference between the 30-06 and the .270 and get a decent glass for it. After you cover up (not permanently of course, may have collector value some day) the Dale commemorative stuff.

Can you use either.270 or 06 to hunt in Ohio? I know we couldn't when I lived in Indiana (don't even get me started). Personally I chose .270 over 06, but the deer sure won't care. If its a hunting rifle though, do look at the 7mm-.08, its a sweet caliber that I wish I'd bought, but I was in Texas and the deer were half the size of y'alls. Over all its hard to argue with 06, it will kill anything in the lower 48 you have any business shooting at anyway.

At Dick's about a month ago they had a 700 .308 heavy barrel, in OD synthetic, with some 3x12 on it for $500.  Had the old three sling studs and the stock had that cut in the foregrip.

But out of your choices I'd go with the 30-06 then the .223.  I do use a .270 as my deer gun and every thing that I've shot went strait to the ground, but I wish I had a military caliber deer rifle.

Get an accurate gun and buy a Savage.  ;)

I love my 25-06!!
I had a 2nd rifle, a savage, but got rid of it for a new handgun.
Still have dad's old reworked mouser.
Its a family heirloom. And the 600rds of ammo that came with it.

But if I had to start from scratch 223 for plinkin and 308 for distance.

remember not all 223 are the same,  you need diffrent barrel twist rates for diddfrent weight bullets.  not a big deal in 30-06

I too would get a savage.  very hard to beat for th emoney right now.

I am going to second TAB and Haz here, get a savage if you are right anded. They are just flatout better out the box. (if the three of us agree, either you should run screaming or at least think about the idea. Your call).

Even scarier, I also say go with the most accurate out of the box rifle on the market, get a Savage.

One thing I have noticed in my general area, is that the only ammo in rather large supply in any store is .270. May be different in your area.
I still like the '06 as a more versatile cartridge though.

And +10 on the Savage.

Not sure about the new Savages, but I have a 50-plus year old Model 99 in .300 Savage that is a GREAT gun!!  I can't find ammo for the damn thing, but it's still a GREAT gun!!

I'm seriously considering just buying a scope base for my garand from CMP for $100. Then buy a good scope. Fortunatly this base does not physically alter the gun. So there is no risk to it's originality. Saves a lot of money. Any thoughts?

Personally, I think you should sell the antiquated pos to me for a bargain price and start afresh (guntease  ;D). However, in all seriousness, many states won't let you to use use a semi that holds more than 5 rounds. If you're buying for the range, it might be the way to go. For hunting, I'd still say Savage. 30-06, .270 take your pick, though since you shoot 06 anyway its probably the way to go, even if I do have a slight preference for .270.

I'm not really looking at this being a hunting rifle. Ohio doesn't allow for centerfire rifle only black powder and shotgun and certain handguns. This I mainly for me to have an anti-predator rifle with some serious accuracy and range. My Garand is the center piece of my collection and I would love to keep the simplicity of 1 main rifle for long range precision shooting ie competition and for fun as well as being able to deal with predatory wildlife which in a shtf situation can double as a stand off rifle. Of course that is probably the least likely task for this work horse. I'm thinking simply that I want a good scopes long gun and instead of investing in another rifle that it may be more advisable to improve the ability of this on gun and invest in ammo over all else. If y'all have a better option please do offer it I value the advise y'all give greatly.

The 30- 06, when you care enough to send the very best.  Big Game, 2 or 4 legged type won't matter,..

Plus there will always be someone, somewhere, with ammo.
