Title: M1 Carbine
Post by: garand4life on May 12, 2009, 09:18:57 PM
First, is an M1 Carbine worth having and 2 hear is the deal... Is it worth it? An Inland M1 Carbine in Good condition with 500 rounds of ammo for under $600?

I'm glad to see the back of mine. It had 600 rounds in clips, rarely fired and was fun to shoot, but why? Too light to be an effective carbine or hunt with, too expensive to shoot really heavily. If you like the looks and action just get a mini-14 or mini-30. At least that way you've got an effective 100yd weapon.

Yes it's worth having, even more so with that kind of a deal. If well cared for, it will go up in value and be a fun shooter.

And, at the rate things are going, the 500 rounds of ammo alone will soon be worth the asking price for the whole package.

If the numbers match it's worth more, but from what I've read in the last few months on M-1 Carbines, then yes it's worth it.

I don't think you will find a "handyer" gun then the M1 carbine.  Infact I'd rather have one for CQB then I would a AR.

It's a piece of history.    In today's market that's a good price especially with the ammo.

A couple of things to look for besides the serial numbers.

If it was re-imported after 1968, it'll have the importer's name stamped on the barrel.   While my IBM might be worth a lot it's devalued heavily because of the "Blue Star" stamped into the barrel.

The rear sights where upgraded, I think during the Korean war era.  If your has original sights it would be worth more, though the "newer" sights are more usable/practical IMHO.

Sweet little carbine, handy and fun to shoot. Round could have more oomph but it's good enough for BG's inside 150 yards.
If it's original the price is good, with the ammo it's a deal.
I'd do it.

Virtually all M-1 carbines were rearsenaled or rebuilt at some time.  It will probably be mixed manufacturer and upgraded parts, but this is the norm.  Some carbine guys get real anal about matching this and that and do a lot of parts switching.  From what I understand as far as originality, other than major parts, it may be impossible to tell which original manufacturer used small parts from the many differant subcontractors.  Buy it and enjoy the fun.

Besides, if the folks of the fictional town of Jerico and a few hundred thousand American G.I.s used them what more can a red blooded American ask for? (Clips!) ;D

Will not penetrate body armor like .223 or 7.62X39

I always wanted to get a 30 round loaded with a spitzer type bullet.  100 grains at 1900fps should penetrate real well.

In order to get a pointy enough bullet for the diameter the length would be to long for the magazine, and becuase of the taper you could not compensate by setting the bullet back in the case.

My all-time favorite show! Nothing like watching a 65 year old with an M1carbine covering a bunch of fake Marines. Yeah I'd say if it's good enough for Johnston Green it's good enough for me. I'll have to wait till Friday to see how much bonus I actually see after it's Obamatized. You know us rich fokes that get bonuses are paying for the millions on welfare to drive Cady's and BMW's with 20" spinners.

The chances of some one having body armor  are so low its not even funny.  if I was really worried about some one having body armor, I skip the 223 and 7.62 x39 and go strait to a M1.  I don't think anyone makes body armor that can stop a 30.06 more so when its old black tip ap.

A ceramic trauma plate should stop a .30-06. It's harder than the penetrator in armor piercing ammo.

Nothing wrong with the Carbine at all, imported, or not. Good condition? Get the thing and enjoy it.

Chances are, crack head or scumbag intruders won't have them. Zombies won't either,...  Now the paratroopers from mythical black helicopters raiding your house in the middle of the night?
