But both McCain's parents were American citizens and the Canal zone was US territory. You are using intentionally flawed reasoning to defend BO, who's sire was a foreign subject, who's Kenyan relatives claim he was born in Kenya and who attended a "Citizens only" school in Indonesia, and has refused the simple expedient of showing a valid embossed birth certificate. The "Certificate of live birth" produced by his campaign staff was proven to be a forgery as that design was not in use at the time of BO's birth.

Actually, while agree with you in spirit, its not without question. The constitution is pretty damn clear about being born here (with the exception of the Hamilton loophole). Even if your mother were American, for a large part of our history, a woman's citizenship was held to attach to her husband. The Chinese Exclusion Act in fact said that any woman marrying an alien ineligble for naturalization would lose her US citizenship (iroincally the court reversed itself in shafting the half American Vietnamese children of US GIs claiming citizenship, by saying that only maternity not paternity could be verified). The point is though that US bases may or may not, depending on the treaty enjoy extra-teritoriality (like an embassy does, as its considered US soil) . This is all academic nit picking, but so is all the right wing Obama isn't a citizen nonsense. Love the man, hate him, I won't argue, he's not my first choice for the office either and with each passing day McCain is looking better, just climb down from the grassy knoll though.

For the record I agree with you on Carter. Giving it "back" to respect Panamanian national sovereignty is a joke. The only reason there IS a Panama is that TR supported Panamainian seperatists against Coloumbia, which was soveriegn at the time, in exchange for the canal. I did not know the specifics as to whether the zone was US territory, ala an embassy, or merely leased, like Gitmo or Subic Bay. If it was ceded as territory, then I stand corrected. Although frankly I think its irelevant in spirit anyway. It is just one of those little niggling points a conspiracy theorist could make hay with if they were so inclined.

I forget, but at any rate, my point is your vote for BHo seems to be an assault against your libertarian views, and your conservative and religious views. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and vote for the philosophy rather than the party.
Which party, regardless of candidate, exemplifies what I believe in? Leave behiind the liberal ideology of your youth, every one is a liberal in college, ya can't get laid otherwise! As you age, you start drinking enough fluid to flush out the hogwash and the bullshit that they've fed you for too long and your mind begins to see their ideology is flawed, that we cannot give to those that only want to take, that we can't continue to vote for "anyone other than ____________ " but must find someone who closely matches ours and our countries needs for the future.

Thank you for the pics. The MSM laughed, ridiculed, mocked, and diminished everything that ACTOR from California did. A generation later, that same media cannot tarnish his legacy. Did he do everything right? Of course not. No POTUS can. But he brought us out of a post-Carter disaster admin.
And after were long gone, his legacy will stand. Even if it's only by holdouts, rebels, and patriots that remember what this country was based on.

So...FQ13, while I have never agreed with many of your comments, I recently find myself thinking that a very large portion of your posts/comments are worth less then worm feces.
Now, I say this because you seemed to be a well educated and an informed person, but you still chose to vote for Obama. And being as informed as you make yourself out to be, there is absolutely no excuse for your actions. So by voting for someone that you knew to be hugely ANTI-gun and insanely ANTI-American, you threw away your complaint card. That in turn, nullifies any response on rights and freedoms you have to offer.

At the very least you may take heart in the fact that you don't have be a conservative Republican to be pro-2A.This is a good thing, because otherwise it will be a pretty small club. While I never have and never will vote for the president on a single issue, I come pretty close when it comes to Congress and will be voting for Christ in 2010's senate race. If you want me to vote GOP in 2012, find me a canidate. (Or I can click my heels togehther 3 times and hope the LP puts somebody serious forward).

I have a R on my voters registration card, but I will not be voting that way until a true conservative shows the intestinal fortitude to stand up for principles and not for Democrat/Socialist/Fascist light that passes for ideas presently. You mentioned Crist, the present governor of my fine state. Does he represent the Rep. ideal? If so, what are the principles that make up his belief system. Now I don't wanna get too wordy and make this seem like a homework assignment. I would just like to hear/read what you are thinking, here, in the great arena of ideas.

The short version is that philosophically, I'm a libertarian. Socially liberal, fiscally conservative (though not in a doctrinaire way), and strong on defense (again though I prefer a realist approach to FP rather than the idealism of either Carter or W). I voted twice for Bush senior, even though I disagreed with him on abortion and would do so again. My problem with the current GOP is threefold.
First, they have caved to the religious right on social issues. These folks don't believe in small government, they WANT the state to push their moral/religious agenda. I'm a Christian, but my priest should persuade me on Sunday, not pass laws telling other folks how to live.
Secondly on the economic front, they have gotten too doctrinaire about taxes and the market and failed to regulate. I'm not talking about socialism here just things like full disclosure for investors and requiring that banks and insurance companies have enough reserves to meet obligations (which would have averted the mortgage crisis).
Thirdly, W took a U turn from his dads foriegn policy. Frankly I think Reagan gets too much credit for the end of the Cold War. He may have helped break the back of the USSR for which he deserves great praise, but it was Bush the elder who made sure it went peacefully, which was by no means a given. The only serious bloodshed was in Yugoslavia which is a minor miracle. W is an idealist who wants to make the world a better, more Democratic place by using US power. Justas with Wilson and Carter before him, we realized thats not such a good idea. We need a more truely conservative FP such as that put forward by Ike and Bush 1.0.
That is my beef with the current GOP. None of it is an endorsment of the dems, and frankly I'm tired of arguing about my vote, its over with.
As far as Crist, I like the fact he seems to be a smart, practical guy, who has done a pretty good job as governor, partly by avoiding ideolgy and building pretty broad coaltions. He seems like a GOP Bob Graham, just a steady hand on the tiller.

Crap how you keep your sheets warm, but being a pervert is neither something to brag about nor is it something to base your politics on, Abortion is a medical procedure sometimes required, to expect a heart transplant or amputation "on demand" is asinine, same with abortion.
Abortion and "gay rights" are smoke screens to hide the fact that politicians ARE NOT doing what is best for the country, only what gets them reelected. America was built on Judeo/ chistian beliefs, if you don't like that to fu#king bad.

Taxes and entitlements: The only legitimate expenses of the US Govt are the defense budget and running the Post office and these should be financed, as they were originally, through tariffs on imports
The population is not "entitled" to anything unemployment and Social Security are paid for by workers and employers and are only administered (badly) by the govt.
Foreign policy: Let them hate us, just so long as they fear us, if they don't fear us enough we need to fix that.
Law: Murderers, rapists, and corrupt or incompetent officials should be killed, publicly, like in China.
"Activists" that try to change or weaken the Constitution, such as the Brady bunch should have their gatherings broken up by club wielding citizens.

Actually Timothy, those two terms combined define Classical Liberalism, the philosophy that founded this country. Don't take my word for it, as I'm full of molten crazy. Instead, try reading John Stuart Mill's "On Liberty", John Lockes "Second Treatise on Civil Government" (the cliff notes version of which is known as the Declaration Of Independence, which is also worth a read ;)) or Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations". All of these works espouse the idea of both social and economic freedom. Its called individualism and there's nothing oxymoronic about being socially liberal and fiscally conservative. But hey, what do I know, I'm just crazy. Argue with with Franklin and Jefferson instead.

However, knowing the TRUE definition of Classic Liberalism vexes me even more when vetted against your decision to vote for Obama! He stands for NONE of that polical philosophy. I live in a very liberal town and would have very few folks to hang out with if I wasn't a tolerant man. That is why I choose to argue principles as apposed to issues. Most just spout issues to fit into the mainstream so as to not cause any waves. Your buddy (not mine) Charlie Crist would fit into that category. I voted for him the first time. He is a nice person, affable, however, he's short on principle. Most refer to it a populist. One has to ask, why would a person with presidential aspirations take a step down to senator. I'm not sure, but principles isn't one of them. He's also jumped on the Global Warming/Climate Change bandwangon (not only short on principle, but on the science as well). If you can't guess, I won't be pulling the Crist lever in the primary.
Whoa! I got off on a bit of a rant there. To sum up my principles, I default to freedom (Libertarian). That is rare in a politician these days. Somewhere along the evolution of our Republic the elected class thinks it has to address any problem with more laws: "See, we're working hard for your here in (fill in the blank)."
You mentioned, "Secondly on the economic front, they have gotten too doctrinaire about taxes and the market and failed to regulate." Both the red spots do not "default to freedom". Taxes and regulations are both tools that are used to destroy freedom as Commissar Obama is illustrating with his dearth of experience, but wealth of liberal (anti-freedom) principles.
We could get into a long and winding thread that covers several political philosophies, but I believe most here will default to freedom. So get in where you fit in and I'm happy you're a "gun nut".

I agree on your assesment of Crist, I simply like the fact that he seems competant, a too rare trait in Florida pols as you well know. As far as the fighting quaker name, it used to be the name of the football team at Earlham College in Indiana where I taught for awhile. It was a fine Quaker school, very liberal as you might imagine, but very Christian too, hell the socialist club began its meetings with silent prayer. Anyway, the team, now known as The Quake, as in quaking with fear because if they won 4 games it was a good year, used to be the Fighting Quakers. The board, in a fit of theological correctness decided that that wouldn't do, hence The Quake. The students though, were not amused and the team cheer became:
Quakers Fight!
Quakers Fight!
Kill, Quakers, Kill!
It didn't seem to help the team, but it amused the hell out me. ;D

Didn't realize that was their name. The only time I went to NW was for a conference. Apparently, there is some day in April, where folks run naked around the campus for a race (why I don't know) however, we were passing a girls dorm when about fifty very atractive coeds wearing track shoes and a smile came piling out, so, my view of the place is positive. ;D

Northwestern's logo is the Wildcats. I used to live less than 2 miles from them in Evanston. Don't know where the Quaker thing came from. Or the naked race - another Northwestern perchance? Or Northeastern maybe?
The turn of this thread reminded me of a bumper sticker I saw on a car yesterday - along with the bho sticker, he had one saying Jesus was a LIBERAL - printed just like that. He was driving off, else I would have collared him to remind him that Jesus was - in today's uses of the terms - right wing, a fundamentalist. He called the priests and their followers hypocrites for pretending to obey the law, but then allow all sorts of mis-deeds against the law when it was in their favor. He demanded a return to truth and adherence to the law, not a broad and baseless re-interpretation of the law.

The NU has an intermeral sports program called the Fighting Quakers. The University mascot is a Wildcat as my high school used the Wildcat and NU fight song as well... NU Big Ten conference teams are the Wildcats....
