Hennepin sheriff says weapons seizures emphasize need for vigilance
By PATRICE RELERFORD, Star Tribune
Last update: May 15, 2009 - 11:37 PM
Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek announced Friday that law enforcement officials seized 18 guns -- an unusually high number -- during one week this month while executing search warrants.
Stanek said the guns were found between May 6 and 13 in three locations in Minneapolis and one in Richfield.
Stanek said the Hennepin County Violent Offender Task Force, which includes Brooklyn Park and Golden Valley police, assisted in the seizures. The force typically confiscates less than a half-dozen guns a week.
The firearms were seized because convicted felons had them or because they were used in crimes.
The seizures come during a period when Minneapolis and Hennepin County have seen decreases in violent crimes. In 2008, violent crimes decreased by 12 percent from the previous year.
"We're proud of the hard work of deputies and police officers throughout the county for helping to reduce violent crime," Stanek said. "However, the seizure of all these guns serve as a reminder that we must remain vigilant."
Since its inception in 2007, the task force has seized 163 firearms. It seized 33 firearms so far this year, and the Sheriff's Office's narcotics unit has seized 34.
During a news conference, Stanek pointed to a table and noted that several of the guns were semiautomatic handguns or sawed-off shotguns, with few "old-fashioned" weapons.
"You don't go hunting with these," he said. "They're used to kill people."

On the surface this looks like they are heading the right direction - Enforcing existing laws.  However, there is enough that seems to be missing from the article that you can't tell if this is follow up on crimes or people already in the system, or if this is fishing expeditions.

Taking it at face value, I like the crack down by enforcing existing laws.  However, the last sentence scares me ""You don't go hunting with these," he said. "They're used to kill people."."  Stanek does not fully understand the Second Amendment.  But, back on my "face value," I'm willing to give him a chance to be educated if he will just crack down on crime and not go for a wide sweeping ban all together.

Good on them!  Enforce the laws already on the books (but get rid of the ridiculous ones) and no new ones!

The only use for a semiautomatic handgun is to kill people?

Off to the corner with the dunce's hat.

And not OUR corner with the big screen, microwave, card table and well-stocked refrigerator, either!!

I use a semiautomatic handgun to KEEP from being killed by people.

Stanek needs to remember to "think outside the box", when it comes to what firearms are "used" for...a felon or otherwise BG can commit crimes of a terrible nature with a 30-30 Winchester, what is "that" rifle used for?

I'm sure he was all excited about the seizures and all,.....but geez,....

As a resident of Hennepin County I support Sheriff Stanek’s actions.  Instead of holding a press conference deriding violence by criminals who use guns and then taking actions against law abiding gun owners like some - he is taking action against these people!

It's always nice to get info that does not rely on the MSM.
