WASHINGTON -- Drunk on power and dazed by ambition, members of Congress have stumbled upon a novel way to keep their spending binge rolling -- and leave American taxpayers with the hangover.
Under a Senate proposal, Congress would raise the federal excise tax on beer by 145 percent to more than $3 a case.
Uncle Sam also would snatch an additional $7 on a case of wine -- a staggering increase of 233 percent and an additional 20 percent on hard liquor sales.
"Buzz-kill doesn't even begin to describe this invasion," said a GOP congressional aide.
Not content just sticking it to alcohol drinkers, the lawmakers also proposed slapping new taxes on soda.
Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) were quick to say they do not necessarily support the proposals they pitched. They were tossing them out there only as options for paying for President Obama's proposed massive government takeover of the health- care industry.

I'm thinking that when you're in the middle of a recession and lots of people are out of work, it might not be the best time to hike taxes on alcohol. I don't drink, but if people are unemployed and forced to be sober... :o. They should probably be giving us free drinks and dinner, since their planning on screwing us. ;D Heck, even a kiss would be nice. :-*

I'm surprised they are not calling it a user fee instead of a tax. I thought they might want to avoid the T word. I guess they learned nothing from the Tea parties.
With all the crap going on in DC with bailouts, regulations, spending, nanny state intiatives, company takeovers, enviromental nonsense, etc., the a$$holes in DC have Kalifornicated the rest of the country. The fiscal policies are nothing but the largest ponzi scheme ever and it will collapse. The average citizen, even above average citizen, can't afford this and that is the plan. Government will make life so burdensom that the government will be the only entity that can "save" the people, hence more government rescues and more reasons to tax and regulate. Of course the "rich" will have to pay more of their fair share. No country can prosper under these types of policies and intiatives. I'm afraid our days of a prosperous, powerful nation are past.
I think we all need to get that secret hidden compound and bunker up.
Rant is NOT off, just temporarily suspended. And yes, it has been a bad week at work. >:(

AMEN ! It used to be tradition in the lands of the British commonwealth to rob and or kill the taxman, perhaps we should ALL become traditionalists.
When the USSR had to cut Vodka and tobacco production in the 80's it led to riots that left hundreds dead.

if they do this they just may have people taking up arms and rebelling. myself, I think I'll try brewing my own. ;)

I figured this would be coming. They did it to tobacco products to fund their little "feel good" projects, and the rest of the country let them do because tobacco is "evil". As a result, a lot of working stiffs gave up tobacco, and now they are not getting as much revenue as they had hope for, so now they are gonna make up for it by going after alcohol.
Need I tell you what they'll tax to death next?

Condoms ?

Condoms ?
Yeah! They'er going to stick a taxi meter between your legs and tax that too.
-
I am not surprised they are going after alcohol. It was only a matter of time. They have done it to tobacco to the point you pay more tax than you pay for product. But damn going after soda come on give me a break you greedy SOB's.
-
Alcohol has been subject to federal taxation since 1784, that's what the whole "Whiskey Rebellion" was about in western (then) Virginia, Then the "revenuers" busting up stills, ATF etc.
It's still BS though because those asshats can't manage the money they get now.
-
protesting this might be fun.... not a tea party, a KEG party ;D .ok sign me up :D

Think "ATF"
Alcohol - They working on it now.

You have it backwards, the reason they have ATF is because they ALREADY, (like for the last 40 years ) regulate the hell out of all 3.
But like MB said, it would make a hell of a convenience store ;D

Kurt Vonnegaught came and spoke at UT right after Waco. He said " ATF, I had two beers before this address, a half pack of cigs in my pocket, and a gun in my car. These people scare the hell out of me". Lets legalize the other stuff and save money on prison cells, the DEA, and get the rvenue.

True Texan must not have found this thread yet.
His outrage will be great and he could single handedly pay for all BHo's plans with the taxes he'll be paying. ;)
-
This may well be the "12-pack" that breaks the back of this country.
A self serving sin tax of that "gouging" a level on BEER?
That's like saying a derogatory remark about Dale Earnhardt Sr. The boys in Iredell County, NC amongst others will flat out riot.
This type of blasphemy/treason will not be tolerated if Joe "six-pack" has to make $50,000 a year to maintain his beer provisions.
Raise the price on Skoal and Budweiser?
Gonna be trouble,...... ::)
-
Till the tax hike "Happy Hour" should be enforced by law. ;D Continuous cocktails flowing. Haz, get the hazatini's made up. Shaken but not stirred please. Everyone break out the blenders and the bbq's. Make it one huge party.

Oh I found it alright... Just been trying to drink enough to calm down. Plus my surplus is tax free at the moment. ;D
It is funny you mention paying for BHO's plan. All the convenience stores within a 10 mile range know me pretty well. I think I have put most of their children through college. I just hope and pray they turn out better then some of the so called "educated" people out there. ;)
I think at this point, the government knows it is in trouble. They will try to tax everything they can which proves at least one thing.... They don't pay attention to historic or current events. Like someone else posted earlier, didn't they get the point of the Tea Parties? OH!! I forgot, those were just racist gatherings to show the hatred of out dear leader skin tone. Still ticked a GarofaHo.
And for those who haven't noticed, my avatar contains a few of my favorite things... Texas, women, and beer. (Didn't think I would have to add the guns to it. Kinda implied being on these forums.)
