Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico...I don't really care if it's unrealistic because I still want a missile launching guitar.  The 2007 version of 3:10 to Yuma, I want a Schofield (or clone) pretty bad.  Quick and the Dead.  Hondo, Winchester '73, The Mexican movie was so-so but the pistol was really a piece of art. The original Stagecoach,  The Shootist, Mr & MRS Smith, Tomb Raider,

Quigley Down Under.  Heck, the Sharps rifle is as much the star in that movie as Tom Selleck!  Winchester 73 is another good un.  My favorite movie of all time is The Outlaw Josie Wales, although they never once show him (or anyone else) reloading those black powder revolvers.

Crime Thrillers - Seventies - British.

In my opinion, one of the coolest guns on the cinema screen was the Model 1932 Mauser Scnellfeuer Pistol.  7.63mm selective fire pistol. Showed up in severl seventies crime thrillers, all British productions:

1. Sitting Target -  Oliver Reed, Ian McShane
2. Brannigan - John Wayne, Judy Geeson
3. The Disappearance - Donald Sutherland, Christopher Plummer

This particular prop gun came in a fitted case, with 1 ten round magazine, 4 twenty round magazines, a shoulder stock, and even a telescopic sight.

Two pics below from Sitting Target ( a British crime thriller in the 'Get Carter' genre), where it was wielded through most of the film by Oliver Reed.

Neat package! Maybe not practical, but it looked great in the movies.

m25operator got pretty much my whole list...

I'd add THE SHOOTIST, although I wish they'd have used the ending in the book, where the Ron Howard character keeps the gun and, "it felt good..." I also like THE PROFESSIONAL and, perversely, THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS, because Chow Yun-Fat is the God of Cool. I could go through a whole list of John Woo movies, including A BETTER TOMORROW and THE KILLERS. I also think HARD TARGET is a far better movie than people give it credit for; I keep watching it whenever its on. Wilford Brimley rocks! JOSEY WALES because it is a perfect movie with a breath-taking script. JEREMIAH JOHNSON because, bizarrely, it warped my entire life and helped turn me into the whacko I presently am. From the French trapper Del Gue:

Quote
I ain't never seen 'em, but my common sense tells me the Andes is foothills, and the Alps is for children to climb! Keep good care of your hair! These here is God's finest scupturings! And there ain't no laws for the brave ones! And there ain't no asylums for the crazy ones! And there ain't no churches, except for this right here! And there ain't no priests excepting the birds. By God, I are a mountain man, and I'll live 'til an arrow or a bullet finds me. And then I'll leave my bones on this great map of the magnificent...

"The Way of the Gun". I understand that the director actually took the firearms used in this movie out to the desert and recorded them for use in the movie instead of using stock firearms sound effects, which we know don't always match up with what is being fired.

Great "shootout" in the Mexican bar in the movie "Geronimo", with Robert Duvall, Jason Patrick, Matt Damon and Wes Studi.

I liked the new Sniper movies.  You gotta watch all the behind the scene stuff and listen to the actual sniper talk about how he would really have taken the shot.

Heat, Collateral... Say what you will about Michael Mann, he works on gun details (i.e. using an IPSC (I think) champ as an assassin in the Miami Vice TV series.

Josey Wales for no other reason than the dialog... "You gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?"

Chow Yun-Fat is pretty damn cool with those twin 92s.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly were Eli Wallach builds the perfect revolver by cannibalizing the gun store.

Full Metal Jacket... "This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine."

Day of the Jackal. I want a crutch gun.

The Mummy. The pair of French army revolvers Rick carries in the shoulder rig... I haven't lusted for any thing French that badly since Catherine Deneuve was Steve McQueen's girlfriend in Bullitt.

Much searching at work one day....

French Model 1874 11MM Service Revolver. I'd have to head downstairs to the office to get the manufacturer name. Something with a "C" if I recall properly. Very distinctive underbarrel lug and lanyard ring.

Zulu (the one with Michael Caine)

The Man who would be King (also with Michael Caine, plus Sean Connery)

Both are GREAT movies, both show up a lot of old guns.

Once upon a Time in the West --- perhaps the best of the Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns ever made.
Heat
Ronin
The Untouchables -- DePalma's great scenes on the bridge, and especially in the railway station
Broken Trail --- for it's pretty terrific gun battle at the end.

Heat
Quigley Down Under
The Boondock Saints
Also, the newest James Bond is a lousy antigunner and I really despise that, but he has the best gun handling skills I've seen on any of the Bond films.

One that might not be considered a "gun movie" so much, but in which a unique gun plays a pivotal role; "BLOOD SIMPLE", it's a great modern noire mystery.

I thought the gun was a S&W snubbie, but I saw it again the other night, and it is something different. It is a small, nickle-plated, break top revolver. From the looks of it, probably .32 or .38. Unlike so many hollywood movies where sixguns seem to have unending ammunition, the reality of whether the little gun still has any rounds left is handled accurately, and becomes a key point in the story. The message of the equalizing force of a handgun is also handled in a straighforward, non-judgemental way, unlike a lot of movies.

Has anybody seen this film? Any idea what that little revolver is? It's been making me crazy trying to identify it!

Once Upon a Time in West kept me up waaaay past my bedtime last night. How many great scenes in that film?

Bronson taking on Jack Elam and the gang at the depot.....

The ol' gun-in-the-boot trick Jason Robards used on the train.

Henry Fonda walking down the street as Bronson provides an overwatch (with the lovely in the bathtub...)

but nothing beats the opening scene of the little boy getting shot and then the camera panning up to reveal the heartless killer.... given away with Fonda's blue eyes. Cold.

Others I forgot (more scenes, than movies):
Big Red One -- Where Luke Skywalker(!) just keeps blasting the German in the incinerator, finally overcoming his cowardice, as Lee Marvin keeps handing him clips.

Snatch -- Vinnie Jones (heavily edited) -- " I notice your gun says "Replica" on the side, whereas mine says 'Desert Eagle Five-point-oh..."

Miami Vice -- the female cop has the Aryan a-hole before her holding trudi hostage. He tells her what's going to happen and she explains..."That's not what happens. What will happen is... what will happen is I will put a round at twenty-seven hundred feet per second into the medulla at the base of your brain. And you will be dead from the neck down before your body knows it. Your finger won't even twitch. Only you get dead. So tell me, sport, do you believe that?"     Then she shoots him in mid-sentence. Almost as cold as Fonda.

The Green Berets -- OK, this is a horribly propagandistic movie that I guiltily enjoy (up until the final scene with Wayne and ho-Chuck...) But the scene that stands out is after the big guy gets killed in hand-to-hand on the final mission. Wayne picks up the guys M16 and smashes it against a tree so the VC don't use it. The gun shatters like the Mattel plastic that Wayne (and many others) thought the gun was made of. Now, I wouldn't trade my AR for much of anything.... but if I knew I had to put a tango down in one shot, my Garand would look pretty appealing.

I could do this all day.... I need help.

I must admit to being way behind on my reading.  Had the chance to do a little catch up while tied up this weekend and came across terrific articles in "Traditions" Quarter 3:  2007:

The first, I viewed as an introduction, was on the National Firearms Museum; and the second was an interview with Tom Selleck.

Selleck's view of how guns are used in entertainment is amazing.  The way he talks of selecting period correct and condition correct firearms for the "role" shows how seriously he takes his craft.

If you do not receive "Traditions" - Beg, borrow, steal, or better yet, become a sponsor of a Friends of NRA event, and read the good stuff that is happening around us.

The Jackal, 1997 remake of the Day of the Jackal.  Bruce Willis as the bad guy has a really cool remote controlled machine gun.

Dirty Harry movie series, Mod. 29 .44 mag, + .44 cal AutoMag in Sudden Impact.

Unforgiven, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Bloodwork, In the Line of Fire....Aw heck, just about any Eastwood flick.  He likes his guns to be accurate.

The Untouchables.  Sean Connery's character uses a sawed off double gun, not to mention the .45's, .38's and Tommy Guns.

Aliens.  Space Marines carry a made-up gun, a "caseless 10mm pulse rifle,"   The Pulse rifles were made of a shell with an upper casing using a .45 caliber M1 Thompson submachine gun, the lower is a Remington 870 12-gauge pump shotgun with a Franchi SPAS-12 shotgun exterior put on it.

Raiders of the Lost Ark/Temple of Doom.  Harrison Ford used a Webley .455 in both of the first two Indian Jones movies.  He also uses a 1911 in the bar room shootout of Raiders, but you have to look quickly, because he goes back to the Webley for most of it.  Goof?

Lots of others.........

I know it's been mentioned before, and probably by me, but right now I'm in the middle of Winchester '73 (Encore Westerns), with a fire in the fireplace, some fresh cookies thanks to the household cook, and light snow coming down outside.
