Secret Service investigating
A LOCAL newspaper in northwest Pennsylvania has apologised for running a classified advertisement that called for the assassination of US President Barack Obama.

The Warren Times Observer, with a circulation of about 11,000, ran the ad in Thursday's paper and pulled it as soon as it was discovered by a manager, publisher John Elchert said.

The ad read: "May Obama follow in the footsteps of Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy."

Mr Elchert declined to identify the person who placed the ad, and said he had referred the case to local police, who notified the Secret Service.

Mr Elchert said the representative who took the ad apparently didn't make the connection between the four assassinated presidents - Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley and John F. Kennedy - and mistakenly allowed the ad to run.

"It was just an honest mistake," he said.

Jim Mackin, a spokesman for the Secret Service, said investigators had identified the person who placed the ad and were taking it seriously.

"We do not have the luxury of doing otherwise," he said.

Concerns about Mr Obama's safety arose early in his campaign for president, especially among African Americans who expressed fears he could meet the same fate as black civil rights leader Martin Luther King, assassinated in 1968.

The Secret Service provided round-the-clock protection for Mr Obama, the first black president in US history, from an early stage in the campaign.

In a post on its website yesterday, the newspaper said the ad "apparently alludes to the wish that President Obama meets an untimely end by linking him with four assassinated presidents".

It said the paper apologised for the "oversight."

The reporter/journalist, a fine example of our education system, probably was ignorant of American History.

Why would he pick Garfield? Why not a more prominent POTUS, like Martin Van Buren, James Polk, Chester Arthur?

This reads more like he is just hoping for his assasination not seeking it to be done. But I could be wrong. I am sure he will be punished severly.

I know several people that made statements three years ago that "our only hope is that some one will kill "W""  These were not just glib comments or jokes.  These people are dyed in the wool liberals that made asses of themselves when BHO was crowned.

Because they were not shot.

It's like yelling "fire" in a theatre or "bomb" at an airport.  The Secret Service has to take this stuff seriously.  Like it or not.

The ad per se probably is't a crime, there was no threat and it didn't seem to call for volunteers or a meeting, but the SS is going to be going through his underwear drawer for months, and good. I laughed for about ten seconds watching W field those shoes. Then I got pissed bacause thats OUR president. And I began to hope the SS agents who let the SECOND shoe (you know the one that was thrown after the first), would spend the rest of their careers doing winter duty in Fargo and summers in Nogales.

No it was ignorance bred of our public school system.

And Tab and FQ, so nice to see you continuing in your "I'm a complete moron" capacity here. The 1stA does allow him to say this and more, it is not yelling fire in a crowded theater. No problem having the SS investigate him thoroughly, but when they're done, and if there is nothing more to this story, there should be an end to the story at that point. Period. You don't have to like it, you don't have to agree with the ad writer, but he was the right to say it. Sorry, that's just the way it is. Or should be. However, our new insect overlords may have a new idea about that.

Don't disagree with you Path, (except the I'm an idiout part of course). You'll note that I averred its not a crime. However, the reality is threatening any pres., paricularlly post 9-11 is probablly not going to end with an interview. I would expect backgroud checks, travel history, medical and criminal history to all be done. This will take a while.

Doesn't look like a threat quite as much as plain old wishful thinking on someone's part.

Guy will get federally fu*#ed for saying what 48% of voters are thinking. But they are wrong, those 4 presidents became martyrs and will be remembered for ever.
I would prefer if BO went like William Henry Harrison, get sick and die quietly before he has much chance to screw up anything else and then just fade into his deserved obscurity, maybe be an extra credit question on history tests.

Not likely for the " first black president elected ever"...
Kennedy was assasinated on my 6th birthday and I was baptised on Dec. 7th so how's that for irony  :o
