First, if this has been covered, please feel free to direct me to the post.
Auto or revolver? .380, .38/9mm, higher?
What are your opinions on calibers and holsters for concealed carry?
I'm not asking what I should carry, but wanting ideas/opinions on what is popular and what is being carried. Opinions on the Ruger LCR, Kal-Tec PF9 and P3AT, and others.
Thanks in advance.

I'm sure that if you do a thread search there are too many threads to count and link to this topic.. I'll leave it to the more senior members to link you to the best thread. None the less I'll bite.
I carry and get along with great a Beretta 3032 Tomcat in .32 acp 7+1 and I purchased a Don Hume leather holster for it and it sits nicely in my pocket everywhere I go. My Beretta happens to be the Stainless model whatever their fancy word for that is Inox or something anyway it has a slighly wider slide than my friends Blued counterpart. I personally like the stainless model for there is less maintenence on it but the holster I bought was special made for it and you can not get the crimsion trace laser grips for it. So there are drawbacks to this model but over all I'm very pleased with this gun keeping in mind it's capabilities

There are many weapons covered. Anywhere between .22's to .44 magnums. As for .380's, I think Bersa, Ruger LCP, Magnum Research have been covered. If you are wanting any reviews by forum members, they are listed.
Ruger LCP's are really popular. Everyone has their own flavors and list their pro's and con's. Most advise to get what is comfortable for you. You will be using the weapon, not us.
Seems broad but I am sure others will have something to post.
My personal recommendations are Glocks or Smith and Wesson M&P's. I also have a Ruger LCP but pretty much carry a Glock 21SF .45 ACP most of the time. I have been trading in to make sure most of my weapons are .40 S&W or .45 ACP.
-
Are you TRYING to start WW-III, or is just an added benefit ? ;D Best thing is go a rent a bunch of both then find out which you shoot best and are most comfortable with.
No matter what ANY ONE recommends 3 people will say the caliber is to small, a couple more will say the gun is crap, and then some one will post that none of these people know what they are talking about the ONLY option is a (insert random brand, model, and caliber here)
For self defense I prefer .357 Mag,revolver or 1911 in .45 acp. because .22 isn't enough to trust your life to and those 2 calibers are the most common, (although .45 ammo costs more when you can find it) after that 9mm as it is the most common world wide. Of these 3 cartridges the newest is the .357 which dates back to the 30's, both 9mm and .45 ACP are over a 100 years old. the chances of surprises are pretty slim. Glocks are OK, the only VALID complaint is some people don't like the grip, hell with them, if you shoot it well it will grow on you like an ugly puppy, they seem to be the most indestructible brand on the market, points are awarded for going bang good looks aren't needed.
If you are looking for total concealment, something like a Kel Tec or Ruger LCR may be what you need, small size makes them difficult to shoot well but they can be carried covertly as opposed to simply concealed, DO NOT TRUST YOUR LIFE TO ANYTHING SMALLER THAN .380
That's just some general info, there are to many variables you have not mentioned to HONESTLY be any more specific.
As I said, try as many as you can, then compromise with comfort, (you need to carry ALL the time, ESPECIALLY when you think "oh I won't need THAT") conceal ability, (How will you carry it so it does not show but is still accessible) and shootability, (does you no good if you can't hit with it) when you settle all that then there are price considerations, can you afford a $3000 custom 1911 or are you limited to a $200 Hi Point. When you get a hand gun you MUST have a holster if you intend to carry it safely. once you have decided on equipment get professional training in SD, if you do not already know a REPUTABLE trainer ask at your local gun store, range and Police Dept.

Tom has given good advice, as always.
We have 4950 members which means you will probably get at least 4000 different opinions. The remaining 950 members are us old guys who can't remember signing up twice or forgot our handles... ;D
Anyway, as Tom has already indicated, what works for you won't necessarily work for everyone. Do your research and don't rush the decision. Take your time and be comfortable with whatever you decide.

Hello FyreSarge, welcome to DRTV, broad question for CCW, the answer is in your own personal experience. IMHO, I can carry a j-frame, just as easy as my PPK/S (when I get the da** thing back from S&W), or my Kel-Tec P3AT, which is a great pistol here in S. Florida. In our mild winters, with more clothes, jeans, jacket, etc,... M+P, or 1911, works.
I only carry what I have tested with a variety of ammo, and even deliberately skip a cleaning and take it to the range "dirty" for any "issues" or Quirks that my life may depend on.
Agree with the .380 limit, although as an ultimate "back up gun" to a primary, those tiny .22 Magnum revolvers, are better than nothing if your primary fails, or runs empty. ( just speaking from a hot climate ), if I lived in Northern Maine, or Alaska, it would be different.
Maybe provide a little about your exp. and there is a whole host of options. But it will always come down to your level of training, and applications.
Thanks again for posting.

JSC, no offense, I was still typing when you posted, but I am leery of the effectiveness of .32 for a primary carry gun (if I ever buy a back up though it may be a Kel tec P-32) But It goes toward illustrating the rest of what I said

None taken... I agree it is a little light but I sure don't want to be hit by it.. There is going to be some level of "Shock" factor having a gun pointed back at you.. and I also forgot to mention depending on the attire of the day.. I am probably carrying the Beretta and my Full Size Walther P99 .40 but I never go anywhere without my Beretta.
Again.. Like Tim said.. there are nearly 5000 Members and 90% will have their opinion. The .32 is more potent than most think though.. Sent my Speer Gold Dot's across the crono at 950 fps and energy is somewhere near there too.. I'm not a HERO but I do want something to fire back if the situation came around

Sorry, I may have put the mouth in gear before engaging the brain on this :-[ For the record....I am not asking what I should carry I just wanted to get opinions and info on what others are doing in the way of CCW. Also opinions on some of the smaller framed pistols/holsters.
I know it is a wide open topic, but I'm a firefighter, not much of a writer. Thanks, and be safe.
-
Personally? Mostly a Para LTC in .45 acp with a "silent thunder" IWB from Tucker gun leather. Sometimes a Springfield EMP in 9mm.

Do you have something in mind or do you not want to pee in the pool just yet?
Good to hear from FF's though.. Another reason I carry.. Recently Former Chief of a Small Vol Fire Dept. Driver of P level Ambulance (Area covered very rough rural areas - Drugs and Dogs) and Former Dispatcher for Local Sheriff's department. Still on the Fire and Ambulance but Paying the bills at a new job.

Either a Govt. model 1911 or S&W model 13 .357 IWB, either just behind the right hip or cross draw depending on clothing.

Para LTC 1911 in .45 ACP for the colder months and a .357 snubbie for the warmer months. Both in slide holsters, or on occasion the snub in a pocket holster when I'm wearing "grown up" clothes... ;D
Snub goes or I don't.....except to work!

Warmer Months? Did you happen to notice he's from Georgia.. there is only Mildly hot and Hot there.

Nope, didn't notice. ;) I did live in Florida for a year and it DOES get cold in the south, just not the mild, New England kind of friggin' freeze your ever loving ass off cold! ;)

Good advice already, particularly from Tom and Tim. Personally, I strongside pocket carry most of the time, a j-frame (.32 H&R mag.) in Hedley leather. The reload, blade and light ride weakside. The advantage to this carry mode is that a full firing grip can be acquired on the weapon covertly and it can be drawn quickly. In situations where I'm feeling less optimistic, I opt for a 5" gubmint model in a Crossbreed IWB holster. Of all of the IWB holsters I've worn, and there's been a bunch, it's been the most wearable and adjustable of the crop. The only "right" answer is the one that fits you.

Off topic....
Walt, can you shoot the .327 Federal out of your J-Frame or am I backwards?

The main thing is, given minimal acceptable power, (which I put at .380, others .32, though I'll only carry a nine or bigger) is of course realibilty, then concealabilty, then some combination of accuracy and price. Personally I've carried a .38 cheif's special, a glock 19, a Bond .357 Derringer, a Kel-tec P11 and now a G-26, which is the winner for me. All of the others were nice, although I did have trust issues with the Kel-tecs trigger. I just could not hate it enough, but your mileage may vary. First I'd evaluate your needs for concealment. Find a list of realiable guns that you can afford that fit and start reasearching. Fire what you can and ask us (and sane people too). And then understand that its all subjective. Unless the answer is Glock and then its gospel. ;D

Nope, but as you said, you can go the other way. A gunwriter friend should be getting one of S&W's .327 offerings by summer's end and I plan to give it a test run. As I have a substantial quantity of .32 H&R mag. rounds, it may prove to be a natural upgrade for me. To address the "stopping power" issue; the .32 H&R mag. is capable of punching a hole through a 1" oak board. Like a really smart old gun guy used to tell me; if you're capable of making head shots under duress at 20 yds; the size of the bb doesn't much matter. But, as previously mentioned, everyone's mileage will vary.

.357 snubbie IWB and sometimes in the pocket. The snubbie goes where I go...Always.
I have carried my 9mm IWB in winter months but not very often.

With Ruger and Charter that will make 3 manufacturers producing pistols in this caliber, that will increase incentive for ammo makers to make the ammo more available and make it a more viable SD choice.

The .327 Federal has some impressive numbers and losing .045" in diameter vs. the .357 ain't giving up much. Yea, a little mass loss too but the 1300 fps and 434 lbs ME from a 3" barrel are pretty stout! It's worth a look! I'd carry that over a .380 or 9 x 19 any day!

there is no replacement for displacement.

More manufacturers getting into the game decreases my only objection to it, 6 instead of 5 in a J frame size package is a plus.

Sorry fyresarge, guess I did not answer correctly. I carry a Glock 21 SF, .45 ACP with a Blackhawk Serpa Holster. If I need something more compact, I do have a Smith and Wesson M&P 9c that I also use a Blackhawk Serpa Holster with.
My wife carries the Ruger LCP .380 with Desanti's IWB holster.

Man o man Fyre Sarge,
This is a tough can of worms to open. So much comes down to personal choice.
I'm from Texas so I usually need something that I can carry in HOT weather, probably very similar to South Georgia.
I would say .380 acp as a minimum. Don't let anyone tell you that a .380 with modern defense ammo is an inadequate mouse gun. I've personally seen patients come into the Emergency Department with .380 wounds and leave the E.D. by way of the coroner.
Good force on force training and proper shot placement make the difference. I'm sure that if you are a fireman/EMT you have seen the damage that most calibers can do.
I'm personally a fan of the many 9mm sub-compacts that are available today. I usually carry a Walther PPS in 9mm on most days. See www.waltheramerica.com I also carry a 380 on occasion and even a full size 1911 or 357 magnum from time to time. Right now I just personally prefer a 9mm sub-compact for power/size/comfort/reliability.
Other great 9mm sub-compacts include the Springfield XD sub-compact, Glock 26, Rohrbaugh, Para PDA 9mm, Kahr Arms many 9mm models and many, many more. I would highly recommend finding a local range that has a large variety of guns that they will allow you to try (most ranges that offer training classes for concealed carry have loaners). Try out as many as you can and find the gun that you are the most comfortable with and the most proficient with. Then buy it and train, train and train some more.
Good luck and stay safe.

Thanks for all the input so far.
Since I already own .38s, 9mms, and 40 S&Ws, I'm going with one of those calibers and IWB holster. I am also very interested in the Crimson Trace lasergrip. I just need to narrow down the mfgs to what I feel is "mine".
There is a show coming to Valdosta,GA June 20-21, so I can get my hands around all of the ones I'm interested in, and maybe a price I can also handle.
I guess I could sell some of my bigger pistols.......NAW, Ain't gonna happen ;D

Hot dang, another south Georgia member (I'm in Tift county).....take us a while to catch all the Texas fellers on here. ;D
As to CCW down here, I usually go with Glock 27 in a Blackhawk SERPA OWB. I also use a leather beltslide.
Winter i sometimes go with Commander 1911 .45 ACP in a Ted Blocker IWB.
Welcome aboard.

You're a lucky man.
Right now I have my PPS, A S&W PPKS and a PPKS Aristocrat. My next Walther will likely be a P22.
Any recomendations? I'll bet you've got quite a few of the German models.
-
"A S&W PPKS and a PPKS Aristocrat."
Saying that is bound to annoy a few here who are still waiting to get their guns back from recall work.
-
As far as holsters go, I can't recommend the Crossbreed SuperTuck Deluxe (http://www.crossbreedholsters.com/IWB/tabid/56/CategoryID/1/List/0/Level/1/ProductID/1/Default.aspx?SortField=UnitCost+DESC%2cProductName) holster enough.
I carry a Taurus 24/7 Pro in .45 in that Crossbreed holster. Any of my shirts will cover it just fine. Plus, if I have to be dressed nicely with a tucked in shirt, the holster still works with the shirt tucked in over it. I also keep a LCP in my truck for those quick emergency trips to the convenience store. Drop in a pocket with a DeSantis Nemesis Pocket Holster and off you go.
I change it up occasionally and carry something different, but the Taurus/Crossbreed setup is my main rig.

Don't worry, there are plenty of peaches in Fredericksburg: Texas Hill Country Peaches and Fruit (http://www.texaspeaches.com/)

No doubt, G.R.I.T.S. (IMHO) are the best! Of course, I've been told if you cull 'em,you'll go to hell.

You're a lucky man.
Right now I have my PPS, A S&W PPKS and a PPKS Aristocrat. My next Walther will likely be a P22.
Any recomendations? I'll bet you've got quite a few of the German models.
I have 2 P99 .40's and a P22 and a G22 (Not GLOCK)
I have shot some of the ppk ppk/s models and they are recomended not to use hallow point ammo with those because they fail to feed.. I personally didn't think it was right for me. I may get one sometime but they are really cashy. I would like to get a P99c .40 for CCW the PPS isn't enough smaller to have me go that way.
Side note on the P22. Mine and a friend that I know that has one had to take the No-Mag safety out of it. We bought some Factory Mags that were siver instead of blue? Whatever the difference was they wouldn't allow the gun to fire. After 2 sets of these we came to the conclusion it was this safety and it was taken out. I personally like the No mag safety removed anyway because you can drop the hammer without putting a mag in the gun.
-
I've said this before but it deserves repeating!
Save the 300 bucks for the Walter P22 and buy something that goes bang, every time....I have never seen a more unreliable hangun, in any caliber. It's my opinion. Nothing against Walther in general as I've shot the PPK extensively though not since S&W got involved. I'm sure others will disagree and that's fine.
The PPS, I could not find a way to eject a spent magazine without it hitting the palm of my hand and stopping the mag. I was real close to buying it and that killed it for me. It seems like a fine little gun.
-
Only problem with the P22 I have ever had was with the mag safety. The other guy had to polish the hammer a bit to make the slide work a little smoother. I have shot a couple of thousand rounds through mine and with little maintence it keeps firing
-
That's great!
My future SIL bought one for my daughter and I won't, under any circumstances, let her shoot it anymore. I think he just got a lemon and needs to get rid of it or detroy it. I don't know if S&W has been any help.
Thankfully, she enjoys her Sig much more and is getting comfy shooting the 9mm.
-
Don't throw it away.. I'd like to see it and diagnose the problems with it.
And yes.. Walther is the evil Bastard child of S&W. Customer service sucks when dealing with them about a walther. If it wasn't for Walther they wouldn't have the ability to steal several ideas from them for their M&Ps that I don't really care for...
This is a general gun forum and everyone is entitled to thier opinions.. maybe I and my friend have exceptionally good P22's but I would like to think you got the lemon
-
kinda drifting here...
The one experience I've had with S&W wasn't good. SIL had one of their SW1911 just had bunches of problems. Mike took it in, they spent a month going through it, gave it back with a note saying "No Problems Exprerienced" and he continued to have trouble. He eventually got rid of it because he just could not trust it. That gun was worth about 1200 bucks.
Last weekend, a guy at my range handed me his SW1911PD Doug Koenig LTD, worth about 2500 bucks and had the exact same problems with stovepiping brass on factory ball ammo...great trigger though.
The S&W lines of guns, one of the few gun lines I can buy in MA, is off MY list...again, it's just my opinion.

That's what I do with Ruger, LOVE their revolvers and bolt action rifles, Semi auto's though, (except .22's ) I HATE !

Thanks for the info and thanks to everyone else for the info on the P22. I was looking for something light and easy to start out my very petite 16 y/o daughter on. I think that I'll pass on the P22 and maybe get her a Sig Mosquito....any thoughts on that one?
Regarding the PPKS and hollow points, I've run many Hydra-Shoks and Hornady Critical Defense through with no problems at all.

That picture is a demonstration of how, even with nice tight, fully filled out clothes (:o), you can still carry concealed.
One on the left has her handbag with a .38 snubby. Just right of left, she is using a "bellyband style" except I think this particular holster is called a "boobband". An from the looks of the space available, I would say she has a full sized 1911. The other 2 have a different means of carrying but I would get banned to the corner forever if I described where those guns were hidden. ;)

You and I have disagreed politically, and thats all good. But, speaking man to man, if you look at that picture and start wondering where they keep their pistols (always a valid question with Tx. girls) you seriously need to reevaluate your priorities. ;D
